The AnMed Medical Outreach Van will offer free blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol screenings at the Pelzer Community building on Wednesday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Lipid Profile including the breakdown of cholesterol into HDL, LDL and Triglycerides is offered for a cost of $10. For accurate results, participants should not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours prior to being screened. Medications should continue as prescribed. An old abandoned inn, suspicious repairmen, hidden treasure, questionable guests and murder? All of this and more will be a part of the Palmetto Players’ production of . . . This Saturday, May 10, CSRA letter carriers are asking postal customers to help Stamp Out Hunger! across America as part of the nation’s largest single-day food drive. To participate, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local letter carriers will then collect the donations and deliver them to community food banks, pantries and shelters.

The Greenville Concert Band and Woodmont High School Band will perform at Woodmont High School Auditorium on May 9 at 8 p.m. The bands will perform “arts for a Lifetime XI.” Conductors will be Dr. Darryl Jachens, Donna Cotter and Bob Cotter. Guest conductor and clarinetist will be Bruce Dinkins. Guest musicians are Dr. Annie Bosler and Robert G. Cotter, French Horn.

The price for a one ounce First-Class stamp will increase May 12 from 41 to 42 cents. The USPS will also increase prices for other mailing service including standard mail, periodicals (newspapers), package services and special services such as certified mail. A new law allows prices for mailing services to be adjusted each year in May.

The Anderson County Taxpayers Association will host a debate between the candidates for 10th circuit solicitor. Chrissy Adams and Sarah Drawdy will be debating issues pertaining to solicitor’s race at the Anderson County Public Library at 7pm on May 8. The debate is open to the public. There will be a reception with the candidates following the debate, according to James Rubinstein, Vice President of ACTA.

The Palmetto High School Band will have their forth annual golf tournament on May 10. at 1:30 p.m. at Saluda Valley Country Club. Any players interested in playing are asked to contact Danny Owens at 483-1890 or any band booster for a entry form. Cost is $50 per person. Deadline to enter the four man captain choice format event is May 6. Free barbeque will be served after the tournament to all players, organizers said.

The American Cancer Society’s Best Chance Network provides FREE pap tests, breast exams, and mammograms for women who are ages 47-64, meet income guidelines, have no insurance or have insurance that only pays for hospital care. Blue Star Mothers meet the third Sunday each month at 2:30 p.m. at the VFW Post #9273 Donaldson Center, 112 Sterling Grove Rd. (off Hwy 25) in Piedmont. American Legion Post #121 is now taking applications for the Patriot Club. Anyone can join upon approval by the board. Officers meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Post meeting is the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Every member is welcome at the Post meeting.

Play and Learn “Reach and Teach” program first and third Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Lunch on the 2nd and 4th Wed. from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Learning fun activities for parents (or caregiver) and children. The Town of Williamston residential garbage collection schedule is as follows: Ward 1, Mondays; Ward 2, Tuesdays; Ward 3, Wednesdays and Ward 4, Thursdays. Residents are asked to place garbage for pickup by 7 a.m. The town has also eliminated curbside recycling and an alternative plan is being considered. The West Pelzer Fire Department Board of Directors will hold their regular monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The meeting is open to the public and members of the community are invited to attend. Williamston EMS is offering reflective address signs designed to help emergency responders find a particular address quicker during an emergency.  The signs have reflective material on both sides and can be mounted so that both sides can be seen. They can be mounted on a house, mailbox or post and provide high visibility day or night.
