MELODY BALLARD

Melody Jones Ballard, 43, wife of Robert “Bob” Scott Ballard, died Dec. 28, 2005 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Williamston, she was a daughter of James Henry and Martha Holliday Jones Mattison of Pelzer and the late Robert Loie Jones. She was formerly a dental hygienist and was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

In addition to her mother, step-father, and husband, she  is survived by daughter, Cayce Elizabeth Ballard; sons, Robert Samuel “Sam” Ballard, Jacob Austin Ballard, all of the home; sister, Rebecca Jones Dauksas of Pelzer; and brother, Timothy Loie Jones of Morrow, GA.

Memorial services were held Dec. 31 at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

CURTIS E. BUTTS

Curtis E. Butts, 79, of Greenville, husband of C. Ann Greenfield Butts, died Dec. 29, 2005 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Westminster, he was a son of the late Charlie Dixie and Lola Pauline Crumpton Butts. He was retired from J. P. Stevens Dunean Plant, a member of New Life Baptist Church, and an Army WWII veteran.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Jackson of Williamston, Thelma Pauline Stone of Fountain Inn; son, Bill S. Butts of Greenville; sister, Lucille Holbrooks of Greenville; nine grandchildren ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was twice married, first to the late Emmie Crumpton Butts.

Graveside services were held Jan. 1, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


AGNES CLARK

Agnes Bishop Clark, 93, resident of Countryside Village, widow of the Rev. Charles O. Clark, Sr., died Dec. 27, 2005.

Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Metts and Lillie Lee Iness Bishop. She was a retired day care center worker and was a member of Waycross Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Charles Odell Clark Jr., of Pendleton, Benjamin Metts Clark of Fort Myers, FL, James Michael Clark of Greer; daughters, Linda C. Ford, Beth C. Banks, both of Easley; sister, Sarah Alexander of Greenville; 12 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


REV. GEORGE L. BRITT

Rev. George Lee Britt, 96, of Anderson, husband of the late Inez Franklin Britt, died Dec. 21, 2005 in Anderson.

Born in Carter County, TN, he was the son of the late David Alexander Britt and Minnie Byrd Britt. He was a retired minister and had pastored twelve churches in four states during his forty years of service.

Surviving are a son, David Lee Britt of Anderson; a daughter, Norma Mauldin of Williamston; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 24 at High Praises Church. Interment followed in Forest lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.


PATRICIA FOWLER

Patricia Ann Sweet Fowler, 65, of Greenville, widow of James Arthur Fowler, died Dec. 24, 2005 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Fletcher and Ella Brooks Sweet. She was retired from Southern Weaving.

Surviving are two daughters, Julie Millwood and Patsy Fowler, both of Greenville; a son, Jessie Fowler of Travelers Rest; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Johnson of Six Mile; and three brothers, Melvin “Joe” Sweet and Bobby Sweet, both of Pickens, and Ronnie Sweet of Pelzer.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.


MARY LOU WILLIAMS

Mary Lou Williams, 72, widow of Henry Richard Williams of Williamston, died Dec. 24, 2005 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Habersham, GA, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Nomia Motes Smith. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and retired from textiles.

Surviving are daughters, Haddie James of Williamston, Patricia Childs and Nomia Strickland, both of Honea Path, and Jody Holtzclaw of Belton; son, Hank Williams of Westminster; brother, Billy Smith of Pelzer; sister, Jessie Welborn of Toccoa, GA; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29 at Cox Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed in Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery.


DAVID D. GRUBER

David D. Gruber died Dec. 23, 2005.

He was born in Marlette, MI, son of Dalton and Helen Gruber. He retired from Dow Chemical and worked for Wolf Creek Productions.

He is survived by his parents of Monroe, MI; brother, Paul Gruber of Greenville; three sons, Shane Gruber of Webberville, MI, Scott Gruber of Holland, MI, and Steve Gruber of Williamston; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29 at the Williamston Free Methodist Church.

RHODA DAVIS

Rhoda Galloway Davis, 86, formerly of Piedmont, widow of Paul Edward Davis, died Dec. 25, 2005 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Lonzo and Margaret Isabella Aiken Galloway. She retired from J. P. Stevens, Estes Plant and was a member of the Piedmont Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are daughter, Glenda Lanett Cooper of Piedmont; sons, Edward Lee Davis, Stanley Wayne Davis, both of Piedmont; sister, Ruby Fossett of Piedmont; brother, Tyre Lonzo Galloway of Anderson; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at the Piedmont Church of God of Prophecy. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


SARAH HAMMOND

Sarah Elizabeth Wall Hammond, 90, of Piedmont, widow of Clarence Lee Hammond, died January 1, 2006 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Lula Smith Wall. She retired from J. P. Stevens, Piedmont Plant, and was the oldest member of Piedmont Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving are sisters, Ethel Bingham of Otto, NC, Margaret Dobrinz of Wenatchee, WA; and her caregivers, niece, Betty Clardy and her husband Willis of Williamston.

Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at Piedmont Heights Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JIMMY ROBINSON

James Earl “Jimmy” Robinson, 55, husband of Janet Darlene Burton Robinson, of Williamston, died Dec. 22, 2005 at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of Marion L. Beauford Robinson of the home and the late James Ernest Robinson. He was formerly employed by J. P. Stevens, Estes Plant and was of the Baptist faith.

In additon to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Ray Ernest “Ernie” Robinson of West Pelzer; daughter, Selina Bren Winkler of the home; brothers, Ernest Ray Robinson, Johnny Dale Robinson, both of Pelzer; sister, Anita Faye Robinson of Williamston; and one grandson.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

BOBBIE R. HAMMOND

Bobbie Sue Reid Hammond, 77, of Williamston, died Dec. 31, 2005 at her home.

Born in Piedmont, she was a retired Registered Nurse at AnMed Health Medical Center. She was a Master Gardener with Clemson University Extension Service and was a member of Young Memorial A.R.P. Church.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Hammond of the home; daughter, Rebekah of Decatur, GA; two sons, Steve Hammond of Seneca and Alan R. Hammond of Williamston; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Zeke Reid of Anderson; and two sisters, Jackie Burriss of Williamston and Jeanette Moore of Taylors.

She was the daughter of the late James R. and Anna Mae Durham Reid.

A memorial service was held Jan. 2 at Young Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

HAROLD TAYLOR

William Harold Taylor, Sr., 90, husband of Daphne Hair Taylor of Anderson, died Dec. 31, 2005 at his home.

Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late Lawson Taylor and Ethel Hall Taylor. He was retired from the textile industry. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Daphne Hair Taylor of the home; daughters, Faye Stovall of Anderson and Bobbie Watt of Williamston; a son, Jim Taylor of Anderson; a brother, Furman Taylor of Abbeville; two sisters, Kathleen Haddon of Abbeville and Cordalia Schoen of Westminster; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

MARGARET OWENS BRADSHAW

Margaret Marie Owens Bradshaw, 73, of Greenville, died Dec. 29, 2005.

Born in Fountain Inn, she was a daughter of the late John Arthur and Lola Baughcomb Owens.

She was retired from Western Textiles. 

Surviving are five daughters, Elaine Fowler of Pelzer, Becky Anders of Simpsonville, Betty Ann Bowman of Pelzer, Tammy Upchurch of Gray Court, and Rita Milks of Grayson, GA; three sons, Mike Posey of Hickory Tavern and Furman Posey and Robbie Posey, both of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters; and a brother.

Funeral services were held Jan. 2 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery, West.

DAVID M. MCGAHA

David M. McGaha, 50, of Piedmont, husband of Peggy Grubbs McGaha, died Dec. 29, 2005 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Barbara Joan “Jo Anne” McAlister McGaha of Piedmont and the late Bill “Goot” McGaha.

He was employed with Wesco Distribution, Inc. and was a member of Word of Life Ministries. He was also a United States Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Melissa Stallcup of Greenville; two stepdaughters, Danielle Baglan of Greenville and Crystal Majors of Easley; two stepsons, Billy Baglan of Belton and Jeremy Majors of Easley; two sisters, Sharon Adams of Greenville and Brenda Jolley of Simpsonville; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Education Center, Greenville Hospital System, 900 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Funeral services were held Jan. 2, 2006 at Word of Life Ministries. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


JAMES WILLIAMS JR.

James Williams Jr., 71, of Greenville, died Dec. 28, 2005 at his home.

Born in Newberry County, to the late Viola Golden and James Williams Sr. he retired from the armed forces as a master sergeant and from Bell Atlantic Telephone Company in Boston, MA.

Surviving are his wife, Helen A. Williams of the home; sons, Stacey Williams of Greenville, and Van Williams of Piedmont; daughter, Franchatta Williams Black of Greenville; seven grandchildren;  one great-grandchild; sister, Ruby M. McIntyre of Taylors, and a brother, Leslie “Ricky” Williams of Greenville.

Funeral services were held Jan. 2, 2006 at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Greenville. Burial followed in RestHaven Memorial Garden, Piedmont.


MARY “EDNA” JORDAN

Mary “Edna” Ladd Jordan, 73, of Belton, died Dec. 27, 2005 at AnMed Health.

Born in Anderson County, she was a member of Pleasant View Wesleyan Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her daughter, Lynn Jackson of Belton; sons, Eddie Jordan of the home, Danny, Tommy and Marty Jordan, all of Belton, Richard Jordan of Honea Path, Bobby Jordan of Williamston, Robin and Donnie Jordan both of Alabama; brother, Mark Ladd of Anderson; sisters, Sara Powell of Iva, Barbara Moore of Townville, Sue Bratcher of Anderson, Etta Ladd of California; 19 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Ladd and Celeste Whitman Ladd. 

Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at Pleasant View Wesleyan Church. Burial followed in Shady Grove Baptist Church.

JAMES ALBERT HOLCOMB

James Albert Holcomb, 83, of Piedmont, died Dec. 28, 2005.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late James Albert Holcomb, Sr. and Addie Jane Godfrey Holcomb, and husband of the late Mildred Beatrice Bridges Holcomb.

He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Face Mate. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Virginia George of Williamston, Carolyn Nyman of Greenville, Darlene Kelley of Griffin, GA, and Theresa Patterson of Greenville; three sisters, Ruby Chastain of Simpsonville, Elsie Wilson of Fountain Inn, and Margaret Henderson of Piedmont; a brother, Lawrence Holcomb of Jonesboro, GA; 12 grandchidren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery.


SHIRLEY BURGESS

Shirley Jean Burgess, 55, of Iva, died Dec. 24, 2005 at Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, she was retired from the textile industry and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her father, William Claude Burgess.

Surviving are her mother, Mattie Ruth Burgess of Iva; son, Larry Earle Ford of Pelzer; sisters, Claudette Driver of Iva and Pat Campbell of Anderson; one grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at Woodlawn Funeral Home chapel in Anderson. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.


SAMMIE LEWIS THOMPSON

Sammie Lewis Thompson of Greenville, died Dec. 26, 2005 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Jleamon Spurgeon and Carrie Bell Thompson.

Surviving are a daughter, Christy Johnson of Piedmont; a son, Dexter Pyle of Greer; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at the Bruton Temple Baptist Church, 300 Old Paris Mountain Road, Greenville.


MICHAEL S. WILLIAMS

Michael Scott Williams, 35, of Taylors, died Dec. 29, 2005 at his home.

A native of Greenville County, son of Terry Edwards Williams Sr. and Judy Ann Avery, he was a member of Highland Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving, in addition to his parents are his uncle and aunt, Leroy and Betty Taylor, of the home; four brothers, Douglas Taylor of Greer, Larry Taylor of Rock Hill, Kenneth Taylor of Pelzer and Terry Williams Jr. of Greenville; three sisters, Heather Williams of Taylors, Michelle Williams and Tina Williams, both of Greenville.

Funeral services were held Jan. 1, 2006 at Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.


HAROLD J. ROBERTS

Master Sgt. Harold J. Roberts, age 69, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, in Birmingham, Ala. He was born on Sept. 11, 1936 in South Carolina to Truman and Thelma Greer Roberts.

Mr. Roberts had lived in Niceville since 1980 moving here from Pelzer, SC. He was Baptist by faith and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer, SC. Mr. Roberts was a retired Master Sgt. with the United States Air Force serving 26 years and was also Post Commander of AMVETS Post 78. Mr. Roberts was a former employee of the City of Niceville Water Department with 16 years of service.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Truman, James and Franklin Roberts and one sister, Nell Crawford.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Joan Havelock Roberts of Niceville; one son, John Michael Roberts and his wife Karen Hopkins of Ellicott City, MD; three daughters, Melanie Demarest of Ellicott City, MD, Beverly Walker of Bryon Center, MI, and Tracy Roberts of Niceville; one brother, Charles Roberts and his wife Betty Jean of Pelzer, SC, and one sister, Evelyn Phillips. He is also survived by two grandsons, Army Pfc. Adam Walker and Lance Walker, and one granddaughter, Jordan Roberts.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at 2 p.m. at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Hartness officiating. Memorialization by cremation.

BEVERLY RICHARDSON HAZEN

Beverly Richardson Hazen, 72, of Aiken, died Jan. 3, 2006 at Pepperhill Nursing Center. A daughter of the late William Paul and Bertha Kate Merritt Richardson, she was born in Atlanta, GA. She was a member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert D. Hazen of Aiken; a son, Richard D. Hazen of Aiken; two daughters, Katherine Lyles of Piedmont and Barbara Hazen Curl of Atlanta; a brother, William Merritt Richardson of Winder, GA; and a sister, Wilynda R. Robinson of Cairo, GA; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at South Aiken Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, Aiken.

RANDY GUYTON

Ralph Randolph Guyton, 81, of Williamston, died Jan. 3, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Williamston, he was a veteran of World War II. He retired from Cushman Plant and was a member of First Baptist Church of Williamston.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes Duncan Guyton of the home; sisters, Mable G. Parrot of Greenwood, Erma G. Hicks of Milledgeville, GA; brother, P.V. Guyton of Paoli, PA.

He was the son of the late A.M. Guyton and Eva Vandiver Guyton. 

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at the First Baptist Church of Williamston. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

BEULAH C. HIOTT

Beulah Cason Hiott, 97, widow of Roy Hiott, died Jan. 2, 2006 at Palmetto Health Baptist of Easley.

She was born in Anderson County, a daughter of the late W. F. and Ada McCoy Cason. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Piedmont.

Surviving are a son, Edd Hiott of Piedmont; daughter, Mary Lou Helix of Concord, CA; sister, Faye Hiott of Pelzer; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 7 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown, Easley. Private interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia.

JOHN CLARENCE BANNER, JR.

John Clarence Banner, Jr., 54, of Piedmont, died Dec. 30, 2005.

Born in Monroe, NC, a son of the late John Clarence Banner Sr. and Jannie Lynn Banner, he was a former employee of Southern Water Treatment Co.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Walker Banner of the home; two brothers, Dennis Banner of Charlotte, NC and Steven E. Banner of Smithfield, NC; three sisters, Johnnie Mae Banner, Clara Banner and Issie Mae Banner, of Charlotte, NC; four stepsons, Michael A. Black of Piedmont, Leonard L. Black, James F. Black and Freddie Black of Greenville; and two stepdaughters, Sarah B. Berry of Greenville and Linda Goodwin of Tacoma, WA.

Funeral service will be held Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Beasley Funeral Home Chapel, Fountain Inn. Burial will follow in the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Piedmont.


PATRICIA STRICKLAND

Patricia Philyaw Strickland, 61, wife of Charles Herman Strickland, of Belton, died Jan. 2, 2006 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Ware Shoals, she was a daugher of the late Vernon Philyaw and Annie L. Phillips Philyaw Harris. She was employed by Mount Vernon Mills and was a member of Williamston Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by daughter, Melissa S. Hutchinson of Belton; sister, Shirley P. Driver of Belton, Judy Hartsell of Rossville, GA; brothers, James Leroy Philyaw of Belton, Joe Donnie Philyaw of Pelzer; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

JAMES HOWARD CROWE SR.

James Howard Crowe Sr., 79, of Greenville, died January 1, 2006.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Lee Thomas and Eula Streetman Crowe.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Triangle Construction. He was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Wells Crowe of the home; two daughters, Susan C. Sheppard of Laurens and Carol C. Buko of Easley; two sons, David Lee Crowe of Pickens and James Howard “Howie” Crowe, Jr. of Greenville; two sisters, Nancy Evans of Piedmont and Shelby Garrett of Easley; three brothers, Guy Thomas Crowe of Massachusetts, Coy Crowe of Piedmont and Roy Crowe of Downey, CA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Jan. 5 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Northwest at 3 p.m with visitation from 1:30 to 2:45 before the service. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
