JOSEPH HUNT

Joseph Hunt, of Greenville, died Dec. 19, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Ira and Alice Blandin Hunt.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Hunt; daughter, Minister JoAnn H. Fisher of Piedmont; sons, Ira McDavid Hunt of Birmingham, AL, Donald Ray Hunt of Columbia and Steve Hunt of Greenville; sister, Minnie Maye Owens of Easley; brothers, Robert Hunt and Roosevelt Hunt, both of Greenville, and Clyde Lee Hunt of Boston, MA; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Dec. 23 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


RUFUS WOOD HUTCHINSON JR.

Rufus Wood Hutchinson Jr., Lt. Col. USAF Res. Ret., husband of May Robertson Baskin Hutchinson, died Dec. 20, 2006 at Abbeville Area Medical Center.

Born in West Pelzer, he was the son of Rufus Wood Hutchinson Sr. and Leila Fulmer Hutchinson.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and retired from the Air Force Reserve. He was founder of the National Rehabilitation Counselors Association.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Abbeville.

Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Jean Robertson Hutchinson of Charleston and Ann Fulmer Hutchinson Waigand; and two granddaughters.

Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial followed in Melrose Cemetery.

BOBBY ‘BOB’ AYE

Bobby “Bob” Aye, 55, of Belton, died Dec. 20, 2006 at the AnMed Health Center.

He was the son of the late Tommie and Maggie Aye.

Surviving are four sisters, Viola Ellis, Mary Joe Edward, Martha Smith, all of Pelzer and Becky Sibert of Greenville; two brothers, Rudolph Aye of Pelzer and Tommy Aye of Williamston.

Funeral services were held Dec. 23 at the Welfare Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


ELLIE THOMPSON

Martha Ellie Henderson Thompson, 85, of Pelzer, wife of Cagle Harry “C.H.” Thompson, died Dec. 25, 2006 at Briarwood Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Vernon and Minnie Forrester Henderson. 

She was retired from Martin Manufacturing Co. and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; daughters, Sandra Ragsdale and Judy Finucan, both of Pelzer; son, Wayne Thompson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; brother, Ernest Henderson of Ninety Six; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Dec. 27 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

ELIZABETH MCCUEN

Myrtle Elizabeth Hopkins McCuen, 72, wife of James Roy McCuen, of Williamston, died Dec. 22, 2006.

Born in Union, she was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Mable Henderson Hopkins. She was formerly employed at Kendall Mill and a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter, Nancy Vaughn of Williamston; son, James Alan McCuen of Pelzer; sisters, Lessie Hopkins of Greenville, Thelma Riley of Brooksville, FL, Edna Willis of Greer; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 24 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

MARY ‘AUNT MERT’ DUKE

Mary “Aunt Mert” Evans Duke, of Greenville, widow of Master Sergeant Benjamin F. Duke, died Dec. 27, 2006 at Riverside Living Center in Piedmont.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late William Charles and Janie Stone Evans. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethuel Baptist Church in Greenville.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

THELMA COGGINS

Thelma Mae Woodson Stowe Crain Coggins, 81, widow of Jessie B. Cogins of Piedmont, died Dec. 24, 2006 at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Earl and Evie Mae Davis Woodson. She was formerly employed at Wometco Vending and a member of Agape Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Bonnie Thompson of Piedmont; sons, Floyd C. Stowe of Piedmont, Jerry W. Stowe of Pelzer; brother, Robert Earl Woodson of Fountain Inn; sister, Jessie Brown of Piedmont; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.


JOHN FELIX STEGALL

John Felix Stegall, 86, husband of Sara Wilson Stegall, of Anderson, died Dec. 23, 2006 at Hospice House.

Born in Pendleton, he was a son of the late Hovie E. Stegall and Sudie Elizabeth Kay Stegall. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He retired from Anderson Auto Parts.

He was a member of the Belton Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; son, John Thomas “Tommy” Stegall of Anderson; daughter, Peggy S. Heckler of Yazoo City, MS; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul E. Stegall of Greenville, Clarence L. Stegall of Piedmont, Carl D. Stegall of Anderson and Joe M. Stegall of Easley.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at the Belton Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

LUCILLE RAMPEY

Lucille Rampey, formerly of Piedmont, died Dec. 23, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Walker F. and Ellen Smith Rampey. She retired from J.P. Stevens Corporate Office.

She was a member of Piedmont United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three sisters, Frances Rampey Gilreath, Annie Rampey Bryant and Alice Rampey Jenkins, all of Piedmont.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at Piedmont United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

GLENNA L. CHANDLER

Glenna Maude Leatherwood Chandler, of Pelzer, widow of L. Wells Chandler, died Dec. 20, 2006 at Countryside Village in Easley.

She was a native of Woodruff, a daughter of the late Arthur M. and Annie Maude Woodruff Leatherwood. 

She was retired from Greenville County Schools as a teacher. She was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn C. Lear of Pendleton; son, Stephen D. Chandler of Spartanburg; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at Washington Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

LOLA MAE MCCALL

Lola Mae McCall, 59, of Greenville, died Dec. 23, 2006.

Born in Six Mile, she was the ex-wife of Thomas McCall of Belton and the daughter of Ollie Fant Newmen and the late Gene Arnold.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Shelia McCall of Darlington, Virgie Jennings of Pelzer and Shelby Thurston of Greenville; six grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Raiden of Greenville and Wanda Maxey of Greer; and a brother, Keith Bailey of Pickens.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel. Burial followed in Graceland West Cemetery.


THEO BROWN

Theo Brown, 93, of Anderson, husband of the late Gussie B. Brown, died Dec. 24, 2006 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Brown and Myrtle Gambrell Brown. He was retired from Chrysler Plant in Wilmington, DE and a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Surviving are his children, Odis Brown of Wilmington, DE, Ann Brown of the home, Julie Robbins of Greenville, Ernest Brown, Sr. of Anderson and Richard Burns of Williamston; brother, Grover Brown of Cleveland, OH; sisters, Ezella Brown of Cleveland, OH and Minnie Lee Vandiver of Pendleton; 15 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Dec. 29 in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel.


JAMES DUNCAN SANDERS

James Duncan Sanders, III, 64, husband of Amy Graham Sanders, of Townville, died Dec. 26, 2006 at his home.

Born in Charlotte, NC, he was a son of the late James Duncan Sanders Jr. and Edna Rebecca Hancock Sanders. He was employed by Rockwell Automation, a U.S. Army Airborne and a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Michael Sanders of Greer; sisters, Virginia Shellenberg of Covington, GA, Judy McKinney of Williamston; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Oakdale Baptist Church in Townville. Entombment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum in Pickens.

WILLIAM PAUL KELLETT

William Paul Kellett, 90, of Greenville, died Dec. 25, 2006.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of Robert David and Emma Louise Berger Kellett.

He retired from J.D. Hollingsworth and was the last Charter member of Eastlan Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice Cobb Kellett; two daughters, Janice Slough of Greer and Patti Kellett of Cincinnati, OH; three sons, Bob Kellett of Piedmont, Mike Kellett of Travelers Rest and John Kellett of Piedmont; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Graceland East Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Eastlan Baptist Church, Building Fund, 625 S. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC.


SARA KING

Sara Medlin King, 83, wife of David Allen King, Jr., died Dec. 24, 2006.

A native of Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late James McAbee and Eula Rogers Medlin. She retired from J.P. Stevens Automotive Division.

She was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Marshanna K. Brown of Columbia, David Keith King of Macon, GA and Allen Wayne King of Greenville; two sisters, Sue Compton of Huntington Beach, CA and Linda Fullbright of Belton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Taylors First Baptist Church. Interment followed at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

SAMUEL A. CALLAHAM JR.

Samuel Arthur Callaham, Jr., 79 of Greenville, died Dec. 30, 2006.

Born in Greenville, he was the husband of Barbara Callaham and the son of the late Samuel Arthur, Sr. and Nora Howard Callaham. He was retired from The Greer Drug Company. He was a member of Dunean Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Pam McAlister of Easley, Terri Saylors of Townville and Beth Ross of Easley; a son, Sam Callaham, III  of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Eubanks of Greenville; and two brothers, Bobby Callaham of Greenville and Jerry Callaham of Walhalla.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Shriners’ Hospital for Crippled Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.


GEORGE W. GRIFFIN

George W. Griffin, 84, of Greenville, died Dec. 24, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Rev. Reese Griffin Sr. and Rachel Locke Griffin. 

Surviving are wife, Sarah Griffin; daughter, Joyce Williams of Taylors; sons, Patrick Griffin of Charlotte, NC, Michael Thomason of Sacramento, CA and Bobby Madison of Piedmont; sister, Lula Sowell of Washington, DC and Marie Griffin of Brooklyn, NY; brother, Reese Griffin Jr. of Greer; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Dec. 29 at Enoree Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


ESTHER B. ROBERTSON

Esther B. Robertson, 87, of Conestee, died Dec. 27, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Laurens County, a daughter of the late Odell Barton and Carrie Vaughn Barton. She was a homemaker and a member of Conestee Assembly of God.

She was the wife of the late Ralph W. Robertson; and is survived by Louis Robertson, Sammy Robertson of Fountain Inn, Glenn Robertson of Piedmont, Roger Robertson of Conestee, Barbara W. Miller of Greenville; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Bell Collins, Bertha Hipps, Edna Griffith, Doris Jones and Joyce Chappell; brothers, Fred Barton and John Robert Barton.

 Graveside services were held Dec. 29 at Graceland East Cemetery.


JOHN M. POWELL, JR.

John M. Powell, Jr. 71, of Anderson, died Dec. 26, 2006 at the AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County he was a son of the late John M. Powell, Sr. and Frances Lucille Bannister Powell. He retired from Michelin Corporation and served in the United States Air Force.

Surviving are a son, Billy Ray Powell of the home; daugher, Susan L. Davis of Anderson; brothers, William Powell and Brady Powell, both of Anderson; sisters, Ruth Carver and Judy Jackson, both of Piedmont; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral service was held Dec. 29 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Anderson with Military Honors.

ROBERT SAXON, JR.

Robert “Woo Woo” Saxon Jr., 51, of Gray Court, died Dec. 29, 2006 in Gray Court.

He is survived by his mother, Jessie Pearl Shell Anderson of Gray Court; five brothers, Columbus Saxon, James Saxon and Artis Junior Anderson, all of Gray Court, Jerry Lewis Saxon of Williamston and William Arthur Saxon of Greenville; and six sisters, Patricia Hawthorne of Lakewell, FL, Helen Anderson and Willie Bell Anderson, both of Gray Court, Shirley Saxon of Greenville, Janie Saxon of Fountain Inn and Deloris Saxon of Washington, DC.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at the Golden View Baptist Church in Fountain Inn. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Louise Hawthorne, 87, of Piedmont, died Dec. 31, 2006 at her home.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Della Chapman. Surviving are daughters, Mary Alice Ware, Gwendolyn Pitts and Bernice Anderson; sons, Elijah Hawthorne Jr., Joe Scott Hawthorne, Twyman Hawthorne, Nathaniel Hawthorne Sr., Edward Hawthorne Sr., Ronnie Hawthorne and Thomas Hawthorne; foster children, Kenneth O’Neal, Gerald Young, Olonza O’Neal, James Young, Richie Boyd and Reba Jefferson; sixty-five grandchildren; sixty-eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Jan. 3 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.Norma Jean Hembree

Norma Jean Hembree, 62, of Greenville, died Dec. 30, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late  Eugene and Essie Davis. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Hembree Sr.; a daughter, Betty Cantrell of Greenville; two sons, Bobby Hembree Jr., of Easley and Preston Hembree of Piedmont; two grandchildren reared in the home, Debra Hembree and Jamie Cannon; two brothers, Buddy and Billy Davis, and a sister, Alice Coumbie, all of Eatonton, GA; five half-sisters; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at Graceland Mortuary. A private committal service followed.


SHARON ANN DUNLAP

Sharon Ann Dunlap, 36, of Greenville, died Dec. 28, 2006.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of John Keith Dunlap and Sheron Hudson Rhodes.

She was a member of Grove Road Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are; a son, Michael Waldrop of Greenville; a daughter, Kayla Jordon of Greenville; two sisters, Tonya Cummings of Greenville and Elaine Dunlap of Piedmont; and two brothers, Jonathan Keith Dunlap of Greenville and John Dunlap Jr. of Belton, MO.

A memorial service was held Dec. 31 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.


ARDES DURANT SKINNER

Ardes Durant Skinner, 69, of Greenville, died Dec. 27, 2006 at his home. Son of the late Malieu and Edell Smith Skinner, he was the widower of Shirley Etta Hill Skinner.

He was a graduate of Lincoln High School and retired from S.C. Steel.

Surviving are daughters, Darlene Dogan of Simpsonville, Aletha Skinner of Piedmont and Veronica Gilliam of Taylors; sons, Darren Skinner of Fountain Inn and Victor Skinner of Greenville; sisters, Sheriday Johnson of Taylors and Wilhemina Johnson of Tampa, FL; brothers, Sanford Skinner of Sacramento, CA; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 at Shady Oak Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
