Charles Leon Black, 71, of Easley, died December 17, 2007 at the Hospice House of Anderson. He was a son of the late Charlie Ligon and Ruth Stewart Black and husband of Betty McKinney Black of the home. Born in Easley, he was a retired carpenter and building sub-contractor. He was of the Wesleyan faith. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Yuna Black of Pickens and Michell Thompson of Pelzer; two grandchildren; one sister, Helen Day of Pickens; one brother, Joel Black of Easley; and one half sister, Maybelle Rodgers of North Carolina. Joan White Huff, 72, wife of Jamie Ware Huff of Anderson, died Dec. 20, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of Edwin Truman and Ruth Johnson White. She was retired from the Greenville School District, and a member of Welcome Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter, Stacy H. Hashe of Piedmont; parents of Easley; and sister, Cynthia W. Beck of Greenville. Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Mary King Guyton, 92, of Evans, Georgia and formerly of Williamston, died Dec. 19, 2007 at the Brandon Wilde Retirement Community in Evans, GA. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Luther Robert King and Beulah Massey King. She was formerly employed by Meyers Arnold and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Williamston First Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Cely of Evans, GA; sister, Grace Watkins of Orlando, FL; and three grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband James C. Guyton. A graveside service was held Dec. 21 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson. May 23, 1932 - Dec. 18, 2007 PELZER - Betty Jean Robertson Neely, 75, of 7 Parker Street, widow of James Leon Neely, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at NHC Health Care in Anderson. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lula Mae Davis Robertson. She retired from the Kendall Company, was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer and the Homemakers Sunday School Class. She is survived by daughters, Barbara Neely Brock of Iva, Linda Neely Lollis of Williamston; son, James Earl Neely of Simpsonville; sister, Lou Ellen Robertson Martin of Donalds; grandchildren, Jonathan Scott Neely, Kristen Renee Brock, Jason Eric Lollis; and great-grandson, Noah Landon Neely. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Dec. 21 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer, with the Rev. Marshall Sargent and the Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery in Pelzer. The family was at the home of a daughter, Linda Lollis, 4 Dianne Avenue, Williamston, and received friends Dec. 20 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Malinda Lottie Simmons Sweet, 66, of Piedmont, widow of Kenneth Steele Sweet, died Dec. 19, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Habersham, GA, she was the daughter of the late Grover Lee and Nellie Mae Griffin Simmons. She retired from the Kendall Company. She is survived by her children, Kathy McClain, Ricky Sweet, John Sweet, Malinda Webb, Annette Webb, all of Piedmont, Yvone Vaughn, Georgianna Stewart, Chuck Flanders, all of Anderson, Kenny Sweet of Pelzer; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Derrick Lee Spike Heatherly, 52, of Anderson, died Dec. 28, 2007 at his home. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of Vera Allen Scott and the late Claude Lee Heatherly and attended Williamston Church of God of Prophecy. Surviving are his mother of Williamston; and a brother, Chip Heatherly of Ware Shoals. Funeral services were held Jan. 1 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
Minnie Lee Guthrie Owens, 85, of Pelzer, formerly of Williamston, died Dec. 29, 2007 at her home. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James and Mimmie Pack Guthrie. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughter, Lynn Davis of Pelzer; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Graveside services were held Dec. 31 at Bethel Church Cemetery.
Lois Alma Guthrie Hawthorne, 96, formerly of Piedmont Highway, died Dec. 28, 2007 at Summitt Place in Simpsonville. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Porter and Ollie Creamer Guthrie. She was retired from J.P. Stevens and a member of West Pelzer Baptist Church. She was the last member of her immediate family. Graveside services were held Dec. 30 at Graceland Cemetery.
Mildred Ann Ellison Bryant, 89, of Belton, widow of Walter Lee Bryant, died Dec. 22, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Foster and Clara Holland Ellison. She retired from Williamston Manufacturing Company where she was a supervisor. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Gary Bryant; daughter, Judy Busby, both of Belton; brothers, Glenn Ellison of Belton, Larry Ellison of Sandy Springs; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 31 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Lee Ann Holtzclaw Sellers, 45, of Honea Path, died Dec. 22, 2007 at her home. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of Billy Ray Holtzclaw and Mary Vaughn Gambrell. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Belton. She is survived by her mother, Mary Vaughn Gambrell of the home; father and step-mother, Billy Ray and Jane Holtzclaw of Belton; grandmother, Alice Vaughn of Belton; three sisters and two brothers. Graveside services were held Dec. 23 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Valeta Vee Mae Kendall Maners, 66, wife of Jesse W. Maners, of West Pelzer, died Dec. 27, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Hammond, IN, she was a daughter of the late Wilbert and Beatrice LaRush Kendall. She was formerly a nurse at Anderson Hospital and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Williamston. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Rory Vaughn, Cory Randall, both of West Pelzer; daughter, Lorie Ann Callaham of Sylva, NC; step-daughter, Kimberly Parnell of Irmo; sister, Mary Lou Brown of IN; two brothers; seven grandchildren; and three-great-grandchildren. Cryptside services were held Dec. 30 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Matthew Cunic, 13, son of Laura and Brad Cunic of Belton, died Dec. 22, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Surviving are his parents of the home; sister, Heather Cunic of the home; brothers, Matt and Eric Shock of Charleston, WV; and paternal grandmother, Frances Cunic of Athens, MI. Tina Angela Blythe Helton, 47, of Greenville, died Dec. 20, 2007. Born in Pelzer, she was the wife of Milo Talley Helton, Jr. and a daughter of R.T. Blythe and the late Martha Crowder Blythe. She was of the Church of God faith. Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Christy Helton of Greenville; one granddaughter; two sisters, Tammy Murphy of Cheddar and Kim Blythe. Martha Ola Smith Drake, 89, wife of William Franklin Frank Drake, Sr. of Williamston, died Dec. 23, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Spartanburg County, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Bertha Lang Smith. She was retired from B.C. Moore Department Store and a member of Williamston Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband of the home; son, Will of Williamston. Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at Williamston Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the Williamston Cemetery. Roger Dale Cowboy McClellion, Sr., 61 of Pelzer, died Dec. 27, 2007 at his daughters home. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of Charles Grady McClellion and the late Agnes Sullivan McClellion, and was formerly employed by Ryobi. He is survived by his father, Charles Grady McClellion of Pelzer; a special friend, Jeannette Wells of the home; daughters, Lynee Carlton of Williamston, Francine Queen of Pelzer, Barbara Ann Hunnicutt of Clinton, Michelle Weathers of Belton; son, Roger McClellion, Jr. of Pelzer; sisters, Elaine Gates, Diane Davis, both of Pelzer; brother, Earl McClellion of Pelzer; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Dec. 31 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery.
PIEDMONT - Alma Betty Sue Trotter Gambrell, 75, wife of Horace M. Gambrell, formerly of Piedmont, died Sunday, December 23, 2007, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, NC. Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Jay and Bessie Hogsed Trotter. She retired from J.P. Stevens, Estes Plant and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Greenville. She loved to grow and make flower arrangements, gardening, traveling, and working for the Lord. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Linda W. Gambrell of Pelzer, Ricky and Shirley Gambrell, Barry and Linda A. Gambrell, all of Piedmont; and grandchildren, Andy Gambrell and his wife Monique of Elizabeth City, NC, Joshua Gambrell of West Africa, and B.J. Gambrell who is stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. She was predeceased by her sisters, Eunice and Tincy Trotter; and brothers, James, Weldon, Andrew, Thomas, and Broadus Trotter. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Dec. 27 at Trinity Baptist Tabernacle with the Rev. Dr. J. Mike Tucker officiating. A committal service followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Clay Wilson officiating. The family members were at their respective homes and received friends 6-8 p.m. Dec. 26 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Clyde Junior Babb, 77 of Greenville, died Dec. 25, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born to the late Henry S. and Mary Ann Williams Babb. He was a member of the Fork Shoals Baptist Church and was a general foreman for the Fluor-Daniel Construction Company. Surviving are sons, Randall Babb of Greenville, Mike Babb of Pelzer; sisters, Margaret B. Pearson and Faye Rodgers, both of Greenville, and Frances Blair of Pelzer; former wife, Doris Babb of Simpsonville; stepchildren, Michael Sheck of Henderson, NC, Cathy M. Cannon of Spartanburg County, David Sheck of Piedmont, and Jeannine Foster of Pelzer. Funeral services were held Dec. 29 at Westville Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Fork Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery.
William Madison Golden, 81, husband of Carol Emory, formerly of Piedmont, died Dec. 26, 2007. Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Luther and Lola Belle Johnson Golden. He was a retired superintendent of J.P. Stevens Seneca Plant and was a member of River Road Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, William Mark Golden, Jr. of Piedmont; two grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Lovett of Piedmont and Mary Ann Rogers of Piedmont; three step-daughters, Angie Partain of Williamston, Brenda Ray of Seneca and Rhonda Chism of Travelers Rest; two stepsons, Warren D. Watson of Tryon, NC and Kip Watson of Townville. He was predeceased by his first wife, Bennie Huff Golden. Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Leon Davis Cantrell, 70, husband of Nell Williams Cantrell of Walhalla, died Dec. 20, 2007 at his home. Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Jess E. and Mae Smith Cantrell. He was a retired carpenter and member of Walhalla First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. In addition to his wife, He is survived by a son, Larry E. Cantrell of Walhalla, daughter, Tammy Cantrell Smith of Belton; brothers, Ray Cantrell, of Walhalla, James Burris Cantrell of Greenville, J.D. Cantrell, John Cantrell, Paul Cantrell, all of Walhalla; sisters, Rachel Reid, Barbara Burrell, both of Walhalla, Sandra Burrell of Salem; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of James Thomas King of Williamston and Tonya Faye Bratcher of Belton. He attended The Church of God of Prophecy. William Eugene Gene Durham, 73, of Greer, died Dec. 30, 2007 at Allen Bennett Hospital. A native of Greenville County, son of the late William Ott and Emma Hinton Durham, he was a retired U.S. Army Veteran and a member of New Covenant Fellowship. Surviving are his wife, Norma Kaye McKinney Durham of the home; three daughters, Sandy Fillers of Surfside Beach, Gena Durham of Greer and Pam Waters of Greenville; a son, Kenny Holliday of Piedmont; brother, Curt Durham of Greer; three sisters, Lois Campbell, Evelyn Gregory and Joyce Beeks, all of Greer; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Wilton Ray Stephens, 61, husband of Deborah VanHorn Stephens, died Dec. 30, 2007 at his home. A native of Central, he was the son of the late Charles Lestor and Alma Lorene Whittle Stephens. He was a retired truck driver for Bi-Lo and was a member of Prayer Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Matthew Stephens of Liberty; daughters, Patsy Lyn Rogers of Seneca and Nicole Parson of Liberty; brothers, Tommy Stephens of Six Mile and J.D. Stephens of Piedmont; sisters, Margaret Crane of Central, Charlene Hatfield of Liberty and Alma Kelley of Norris; and three grandchildren.
