Gertrude Nichols Dudley, 91, of Anderson, wife of the late Joel J. Dudley, died Jan. 4, 2007 at the Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late M.D. Nichols and Hattie Bradley Nichols. She was retired from textiles and a former member of the Assembly Church of Anderson and currently member of the House of Prayer. Surviving are a son, Ronald J. Dudley of Cartersville, GA; daughters, Doris Conwell and Peggy Nation, both of Anderson; four sisters, Geneva Brown and Bobbie Cross of Anderson, Jean Alewine of Starr and Nancy Worley of Anderson; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Jan. 6 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.
Emogene Hester Hicks, 79, of Greenville, widow of Charles R. Hicks, died Jan. 4, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Grover Hester and Pauline Burns Boiter. She was a homemaker, a retired bookkeeper for Charles R. Hicks Heating and Air and was a member of Edgewood Church of Christ. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Reynolds of Pelzer; a son, Ron Hicks of Greenville; two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Edgewood Church of Christ, 200 Edgewood Drive, Greenville, SC 29605. Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at Edgewood Church of Christ. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Betty Louise Adams Davenport, 77, widow of Rev. James Davenport, died Jan. 3, 2007 at Pardee Hospital. She was born in Balfour, NC, to the late Paul and Evie Thompson Adams. She was a homemaker and a member of Standing Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Henry of Fountain Inn; a brother, Charles Adams of Williamston; a sister, Lillian Sims of Williamston; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her stepfather, John Kelly. Graveside services were held Jan. 5 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Rev. Kenneth A. Fugate, 66, of Easley, husband of Judy Plemmons Fugate, died Jan. 4, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was born in Waynesville, NC, a son of Gertrude Jordan Fugate of Waynesville and the late Benjamin Fugate Jr. He was a graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute and was serving as Church Planter for the Southern Baptist Convention North American Mission Board. Prior to his latest appointment, he served many churches including Rehoboth Baptist Church in Piedmont. He was presently pastoring Black River Native American Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Surviving in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Pam May of Easley, Kim Fletcher of Murphy, NC and Cindy Overgaard of Hendersonville, NC; a half-sister, Patricia Fugate of Canton, NC; three half-brothers, Joe Fugate of Maggie Valley, NC, Jim and Jerry Fugate, both of Waynesville, NC; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in Smith Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Black River Native American Baptist Church, P.O. Ron Gray Preston, 57, of Piedmont, died Jan. 3, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Winston-Salem, NC, he was the son of the late Fred and Jean Stewart Preston. He was a retired truck driver. Surviving are his wife, Diane Broome Preston; a son, Ron S. Preston of Anderson; brother, Brian Brown, and two sisters, Connie Ann Wallace and Debbie Stewart, all of Winston-Salem, NC; and one grandson. Graveside services were held Jan. 6 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Virginia Carolyn Wilson Cobb, 83, widow of Paul Romaine Cobb, Jr. died Jan. 4, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greer, she was the daughter of the late Jasper William and Lelia Georgina Thompson Wilson. She was an Executive Secretary at Butte Knit in Spartanburg and at the Kendall Company, Pelzer. She was retired from BB&T and a member of Pelzer Presbyterian Church. Surviving are daughters, Carolyn Janet Jan Hill of Sumter, Nancy OConnor Kay of Spartanburg; brothers, William Jasper Bud Wilson of Williamston, George B. King of Opelika, AL; and three grandsons. James Jim Thomas Roberts, 65, husband of Mabel Williams Roberts of Williamston, died Jan. 5, 2007 at AnMed Health Center. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Theron Odell T.O. and Ernestine Garner Roberts. He was an Air Force Veteran. He retired from the Anderson County Environmental Service Division and a member of Whitefield Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; a step-daughter, Linda Hardy of Williamston; step-sons, Danny Browning of Williamston, David Browning of Anderson; sister, Lee Glenn of Travelers Rest; three brothers, Virgil Roberts, Harold Roberts, both of Anderson, Henry Roberts of Kingsport, TN; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was first married to the late Mary Edward Roberts. Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at Whitefield Baptist Church. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Joe Anderson Looper, 69, of Easley, died Jan. 4, 2007 at his home. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late William Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Hester Looper. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Joan Marion Smith Looper, of the home; a son, Randy Looper of Easley; two stepsons, Bradley Stewart of Greenville and Christopher Stewart of Easley; a daughter, Denise Greene of Six Mile; four brothers, David Looper, Jim Looper and Jerry Looper, all of Easley, and Tommy Looper of Pickens; three sisters, Margaret Moore, Betty Wilson and Barbara Ann Looper, all of Piedmont; and two grandchildren. A graveside service was held Jan. 8 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Stanley Brian Burgess, of Piedmont, died Jan. 5, 2007. He was the son of the late W.C. and Floreeda McCall Burgess. He was employed with Hartness International and was of the Christian faith. Surviving are three children, Stanley Brian Burgess Jr., Toni Jean Burgess and Jessie Marie Burgess; brothers and sister, Wendell Burgess, Mitchell Burgess and Cheryl Albro; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 8, 2007 at The Mackey Mortuary. A private burial was held.
Eileen Ryan Dawson, 85, formerly of Greenville, died Jan. 5, 2007. She was the wife of the late George Robert Dawson Jr. Surviving are three sons, George G. Dawson of Piedmont, Frank M. Dawson of Gaffney and John Edward Dawson of Gray Court; a brother, Edward A. Ryan of Tuscon, AZ; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 9 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. Nellie P. Smith, 80, of Shallotte, NC, died Jan. 3, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Hubert Oliver Pruitt and Clara Lucille Miller. Born in Oconee County, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard A. Smith Sr. She attended New Covington Baptist Church in Shallotte. She retired as an LPN. Surviving are a son, Dr. Richard A. Smith of Coloma, MI; sister, Kathleen Cleveland of Piedmont; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at the Westville Funeral Home chapel. Sammie E. Taylor, 85, formerly of Greenville, widow of Lawrence Charles Taylor, died Jan. 4, 2007 at Shepherds Care. Born in Dillard, GA, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Sara Smith Bingham. She was retired from Pendleton Manor and was a member of Northgate Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Almena T. Simon of Greenville and Debbie T. DeMore of Piedmont; a son, Robert R. Taylor of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Philip Joseph Howard, Jr., 66, of Piedmont, husband of Ann Dunagan Howard, died Jan. 8, 2007 at his home. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Philip J. and Lorice Dow Howard. He formerly owned and operated Howards Package Store and was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Danielle H. Smothers of Piedmont; two sons, Philip J. Howard, III of Piedmont and Joey M. Howard of Easley; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Marys Catholic Church, 111 Hampton Avenue, Greenville, SC 29601. A Vigil service was held Jan. 9 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 10 at St. Marys Catholic Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
James Harold Thompson, Sr., 90, of Piedmont, died Jan. 8, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Oscar Ben Tillman Thompson and Nannie Mae Taylor Thompson. He was retired from Estes Plant in Piedmont, a member of Piedmont First Baptist Church and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are two sons, James H. Thompson, Jr., John C. Thompson; daughter, Betty Ruth Thompson White; sister, Louise Thompson Evans, all of Piedmont; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 11 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Piedmont.
Clyde Sam Jennings, 66, husband of Cathy Jennings, of Belton, died Jan. 9, 2007 at his home. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Clyde Wilson and Gladys Ables Jennings. He was a painter and of the Church of God faith. Surviving in addition to his wife are; sons, Clyde William Jennings and Josh Jennings, both of Belton; daughters, Sammie Rogers and Lisa Nicholson, both of Belton and Susan Lusk of Honea Path; brothers, Billie Ray Jennings, Calvin Jennings and Daniel Jennings, all of Belton; sisters, Margie Lollis of Honea Path, Linda Bell of Pelzer and Ann Shirley of Belton; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at Garden of Memories.
Deborah Hooper Baker, of Pelzer, died Jan. 8, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Asheville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Pansy Hooper and the wife of the late Floyd Madison Baker. She retired from D.C.I. Company, Inc., and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a son, Chris Baker of Pelzer; three daughters, Jeannie Brown of Easley, Joan Baker Young of Gallatin, TN and Tammy Baker of Hendersonville, TN; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Chloe Gooley Lovell Regina, 88, wife of the late Peter Paul Regina, of Easley, died Jan. 8, 2007 at her home. Born in Cleveland, GA, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Ollie Fincannon Lovell. She was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith. Surviving are three sons, Frank P. Regina of Greenville, Anthony J. Regina of Easley and Peter J. Regina of Pelzer; two daughters, Angie P. Hale-Keasler of Sunset and Delores Gregory of Easley; a brother, Claude Lovell of Cleveland, GA; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Jan. 11 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 11 at the funeral home before the service. |
