July 6, 2007 - Jan. 8, 2008 PELZER - Hailey Marie Wilson, infant daughter of Douglas Doug Larue Wilson and Danielle Marie Lee Bowen, of 120 Bellview Circle, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. In addition to her parents of the home, she is survived by a brother, Timothy Samuel Wilson of the home; grandparents, Angela Chris Lowe of Anderson, Rebecca Lou Oates Grice of Easley, Wallace Daniel Bowen of Greenville; and great-grandparents, Martha and Harrison Wilson of Pelzer, M.C. and Jean Hanley, and Patricia Anne Simmons, all of Easley. She was predeceased by a grandfather, Timothy Charles Wilson; and great-grandparents, Clyde Alvin Wilson, Furman Edward Simmons, and Irene Hanley. Graveside services were held at 2:30 Friday at Garden of Memories in Belton with the Rev. Bill Bryant officiating. The family is at the home of Stephanie Harris, 151 Richardson Drive, Pelzer and received friends from 1-2 p.m. Friday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Joyce Hicks Christy, 67, wife of C.K. Christy, died Jan. 8, 2008. She was the daughter of the late J.B. and Birdie Swaney Hicks. She was employed at Sams Club and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to her husband are two children, Kimberly Dawn Thompson and Jeff Phillips of Anderson; four grandchildren; and one sister, Cathy Cofield of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at Park Place Baptist Church. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Agape Hospice, 300B Greenville St., Anderson, SC 29621.
William Billy Henry Hawkins, II, 27, husband of Jennifer Guy Hawkins of Pelzer, died Jan. 8, 2008 at his home. Born in Greenville, he was a son of James Anthony Hawkins and Janice Lynn Bennett Elrod. He was formerly employed by Contractors Supply in Pelzer. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Guy Hawkins of the home; son, Jacob Tyler Stepp of Simpsonville; father, James Anthony Hawkins of Duncan; mother, Janice Lynn Bennett Elrod of Belton; brother, Zachary Burns of Belton; sister, Mary Brittany Hawkins of Greenville; and grandparents, Mary Elizabeth Bennett, James Albert Bennett and Emiko Hawkins, all of Greenville. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Sarah Helen Lockaby, 93, widow of Walter Lockaby, died Jan. 9, 2008 at Piedmont Living Center. A native of Greenville County, daughter of the late Elbert Lee and Maggie Davis, she was a member of Praise Cathedral. Surviving are two sons, James Lockaby of Greenville and Sam Lockaby, Sr. of Piedmont; a daughter, Mary Staton of Greer; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at Woodlawn Chapel of Remembrance. Memorials may be made to Praise Cathedral in Greer.
Charles Atwood Watt, 88, husband of Bertha Alean Saylors Watt of West Pelzer, died Jan. 12, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Paul Tensley and Sudie Peterson Watt. He was a U.S. Naval Veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of Watt Body Shop, a member of Pelzer Church of God. He taught Auto Body repair at the Career and Technology Center and owned an electronics firm in Charleston. Surviving are his wife, sons, Don. A Watt of Simpsonville, Charles K. Watt of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the Pelzer Church of God. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Pelzer Church of God, P.O. Box 276, Pelzer, SC 29669.
Mary Ruth Cooper Springfield, 88, of Piedmont, died January 11, 2008. Born in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late John and Katheryn Johnson Cooper and wife of the late Fred Cothran Springfield. She was a homemaker and a member of Brandon Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Leopard of Pickens and Lucy Chafin of Piedmont; two sons, Calvin Springfield of Pelzer and Larry Springfield of Easley; a brother, R.C. Cooper of Cowpens; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Jan. 14 at Graceland Cemetery West. Rita O. Davis, 58, of Lexington died Jan. 11, 2008 at Lexington Extended Care. Surviving are two sisters, Betty Urso of Fountain Inn and Ann Davis of Greenville; stepbrother, Tommy Davis of Pelzer and stepmother, Ireta Davis of Pelzer. A private graveside service will be held at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Clayton Theo Shorty Gilreath, 63, formerly of Liberty, died Jan. 11, 2008 at AnMed Health in Anderson. Born in LaFrance, a son of the late Ernest and Nellie Hicks Gilreath, he retired from Ellison Plant of Alice Manufacturing. Surviving are a son, Michael Gilreath of Liberty; three brothers, Charles and Clinton Gilreath, both of Easley, and Ralph Gilreath of Travelers Rest; three sisters, Jean Chapman and Kathryn Jones, both of Belton, and Sue Shellenbarger of Piedmont; and one grandson. Graveside services were held Jan. 14 at Robinson Memorial Gardens in Easley.
William Wallace Towe, 77, husband of Betty Jean Watkins Towe, of West Union, died Jan. 9, 2008 at his home. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Jack and Clara Rochester Towe. He was retired as proprietor of a convenience store and attended Wolf Stake Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Debbie Fleming of Townville, Sandra McDonald of Pelzer, Donna Coffey of Seneca; brothers, Guy Towe and Seaborn Towe, both of Salem. Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at the Mausoleum Chapel of Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca. Memorials may be made to OMH Hospice of The Foothills, 390 Keowee School Road, Seneca, SC 29672.
Barbara O. Scott Smith, 89, of Gafney, died Jan. 10, 2008 at her home. Born in Belton, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin L. Scott and Mary Ragsdale Scott and widow of the late Lt. Col Charles S. Sid Smith. She was a retired beautician at the Sans Souci Beauty Shop. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Honea Path. Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Trance Edward Holdbrooks, 79, of Piedmont, widower of Mary Hayes Holdbrooks, died Jan. 14, 2008 at his home. Born in Etowah County, AL, he was a son of the late J.E. and Sallie Mimi Sims Holdbrooks. He retired from Monaghan Mills in Greenville. Surviving are sons, James Edward Holdbrooks of Williamston, Bobby Wayne Holdbrooks, Terry Holdbrooks, Ronald Lee Holdbrooks, all of Pelzer, Joe Holdbrooks of Piedmont; daughters, Sallie Ann Capps, Nina June Hughes, both of Piedmont, Barbara Sue Green, Vicky Darlene Bagwell, both of Pelzer, Debra Jean Robinson, Penny Lynn Cooper, both of Williamston, Sarah Mae Hampton of Ware Place; brother, Chuck Holdbrooks of Florida; sister, Betty Ruth Hayes of Anniston, AL; 30 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of a daughter, Sallie Ann Capps, 410 Osteen Hill Road, Piedmont and will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Thursday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Sybil Inez Weathers Godwin, 91, widow of Albert Louie Godwin, died Jan. 15, 2008. Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde L. and Mary Emmie Woods Weathers. She was a dietician with Greenville County Schools and a member of Hillside Baptist Church in Fountain Inn. Surviving are two children, Mikel A. Godwin of Piedmont and Vicki M. Pittman of Greer; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Carrie Lou Stephens of Greenville and Barbara Shelton of Laurens. Funeral service was held Jan. 18 at Hillside Baptist Church. Wilbur Edward Manly, 82, of Williamston, husband of Ruby Boland Manly, died Jan. 15, 2008 at his home. Born in Ware Shoals, he was the son of the late Leroy and Mattie Lou Martin Manly. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II and was a car salesman. He was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Debbie Tindal of Bishopville; and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy. 81 North, prior to the service. Henry Wales Burdette, 85, husband of Doris Rider Burdette of Williamston, died Jan. 14, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson. Born in Laurens County, he was the son of the late Emma Mae Burdette. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Byars Machinery and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He served three terms on Mauldin City Council. Surviving are daughters, Cynthia Haley of Mount Pleasant, Pamela Watson of Mauldin; son, Henry Burdette of Madison, MS; seven grandchildren; step-children, Dale and Steve Whitfield, Malandie Nixon and Kristy Farmer. Funeral services with military honors were held Jan. 16 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in the M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson. Hellan S. Jordan, 86, widow of the late Louie Otis Jordan of Belton, died Jan. 13, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Viennie Bishop Scott. She was a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Surviving is a brother, Douglas Scott of Pelzer. Funeral service was held Jan. 16 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. WILLIAMSTON - Betty Geneva Macomson Brooks, 82, wife of Charles B. Brooks, of 37 Camelia Circle, died Monday, January 14, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson. Born in Royston, GA, she was a daughter of the late John G. and Radie Jewel Hall Macomson. She retired from Cushman Mills in Williamston. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston where she was a member of the WMU, the Happy Ladies Sunday School Class, and served as the director of the childrens department for 37 years. In addition to her husband of nearly 65 years, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Stacy Brooks of Williamston, the Rev. Dr. Mitch and Linda Brooks of Anderson; sisters, Janettie Busby of Royston, GA, Frances Craft, Kances Craft, both of Carnesville, GA; grandchildren, Chuck (Carol) Brooks of Belton, Hayley (Brad) Atkins of Powdersville, Alston Brooks of Clemson, Allen Brooks of Columbia; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston with the Rev. Mark Roberts and the Rev. Dr. Mitch Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family is at the home and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. PIEDMONT - William Jave Dick Couch, 94, of 726 Blossom Branch Road, widower of Cecelia Pearl Timms Couch, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Riverside Living Center. Born in Anderson County, he was son of the late William and Stella White Couch. He retired from Piedmont Mills, was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Piedmont and a member of the Keystone Sunday School Class. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Joe Kelly of Piedmont; sister, Mary Lou Couch of Piedmont; grandchildren, Barry Kelly, Greg Kelly; and great-grandchildren, Anna Kelly, Sydney Kelly, Katie Kelly, Paige Kelly and Caroline Kelly. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Z. Hearne and the Rev. Dr. Thomas DeVenny officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
