NELL JOHNSON

Sarah Nell Waldrop Johnson, 85, formerly of Greenville, widow of Roy Charles Johnson, died Jan. 17, 2006 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Landrum, she was a daughter of the late Albert Birch and Lizzie Lee Ross Waldrop. She was a homemaker and a member of Grove Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, James Roy Johnson of Pelzer; daughter, Frances Lee Johnson McCraw of Berea; sister, Betsy Williams; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer.


JIMMY PETTIGREW

James Everette Pettigrew, Jr., 55, of Williamston, died Jan. 14, 2006 at his home.

Born in Charlotte, NC, he was a graduate of Southwood Junior College and was an employee of Mayfield Dairies. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson.

Surviving are his mother, Mary Beth Glenn Pettigrew of Anderson; and one sister, Teddi Pettigrew of Anderson.

He was the son of the late James Everette Pettigrew, Sr.

A memorial service was held Jan. 20 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Private burial was held in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

MALCOLM SMITH

Malcolm Smith, 85, of Pelzer, widower of Sarah Ann Smith, died Jan. 19, 2006 at his home.

He was born in Anderson County, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and retired from Crown Metro.

Surviving are sons, Wayne Smith of Pelzer, Larry Smith of Greenville, Ron Smith of Florida, and Gary Smith of Kissimmee, FL.


BLEASE PHILLIPS

Blease Phillips, 85, of Piedmont, husband of Faye Capps Phillips, died Jan. 17, 2006.

Born in Royston, GA to the late Noah and Aetna Phillips, he was reared by his grandparents, the late Weldon and Avazennia Phillips.

Surviving in addition to his wife; are his daughter, Maxie Phillips Freeman of Piedmont; three grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Phillips Derrick of Greenwood.

He was a member of Piedmont First Baptist Church. He was the retired owner of Biltmore Hosiery Company and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at First Baptist Church in Piedmont. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

CORRINE JONES

Corrine Jones, 90, of Greenville, died Jan. 16, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Laurens County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mamie Foggie Pasley.

Surviving are daughters, Mamie Watkins of Greenville and Corrine Jones Gladden of Piedmont; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Piedmont Manor Baptist Church. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


JIMMIE E. HERLONG

James Edmund “Jimmie” Herlong, 82, died Jan. 17, 2006 at his home in Saluda.

He was the son of Frank and Roseva Harrison Herlong and was a resident of Saluda.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and Korea. He was a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby “Bela” Padgette Herlong; son, Jim Herlong of Edisto Beach; daughter, Madaline Haycraft of New Orleans; son, William Herlong of Greenville; daughter, Alice Powe of Charlotte; siser, Angell Adams of Pelzer; brother, Ben Herlong of Saluda; 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Saluda. Burial followed in Emory United Methodist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 102 E. Butler Ave., Saluda, SC 29138.


HOBERT CALVIN MCDANIEL

Hobert Calvin McDaniel, 79, of Simpsonville, died Jan. 16, 2006 at the family home.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Claudia B. McDaniel, are a daughter, Betty Gambrell of Fountain Inn; five sons, Ronald McDaniel of Greenville, Dean McDaniel of Simpsonville, Ray McDaniel of Mauldin, David McDaniel of Kentucky, and Joe McDaniel of Simpsonville; an adopted son, Robbie McDaniel of Greenville; four step-children, David and Paul Barnacastle, Barbara Cline and Beverly Pounds, all of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Carestil McDaniel of Piedmont; and a sister, Thelma Phelps of Piedmont.

A private graveside service was held Jan. 19 in Graceland West Cemetery.

ROBERT H. WEATHERS

Robert Herman Weathers, 83, husband of Edith Edna Stansell Weathers of Pelzer, died Jan. 21, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was son of the late Clarence Stuart and Nettie Baldwin Weathers. An Air Force veteran, he was retired from the Kendall Company and also had a small engine repair service. He was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Judy Biser of Simpsonville, Susan Williams of Piedmont, Lynn Mayfield of Simpsonville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Washington Church Cemetery.

DOUGLAS E. HUNT

Douglas Edward Hunt, 45, of Fountain Inn, died Jan. 21, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Dover, DE, he was a Navy veteran serving on the USS Enterprise and in Japan.

Surviving are son, Douglas “Eddie” Edward II of Simpsonville; mother, Corene B. Hunt of Fountain Inn; father, Donald B. Hunt of Fountain Inn; two sisters, Donna Jean Allison of Piedmont and Dee Dee Hunt of Gray Court.

Funeral services were held Jan. 24 at the chapel of Cannon Funeral Home, Fountain Inn. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.


RALPH WILBURN ‘SHAG’ ALLEN

Ralph Wilburn “Shag” Allen, 86, husband of Parniece Brown Allen, of Williamston, died Jan. 20, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Charles Jessie and Carrie Cooper Allen. He retired from J.P. Stevens, Piedmont Plant, was a member of the Pelzer Presbyterian Church and attended Pleasant View Wesleyan Church.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by; daughters, Brownie Foster of Williamston, Carol Allen Martin of Clinton; brother, Roy O. Allen of Piedmont; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Jan. 22 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. A memorial service followed at Pleasant View Wesleyan Church.

JESSIE COOLEY MADDEN

Jessie Cooley Madden, 86, of Gray Court, died Jan. 19, 2006 at her home.

Born in Flowery Branch, GA to the late Delmus E. Waldrop and Ada Bennett Waldrop, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She retired from Beaunit Mills. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Ronnie Cooley of Honea Path, Jimmy Cooley of Gray Court and Terry Cooley of Pelzer; two daughters, Grace Floyd of Gray Court and Linda Allison of Huntersville, NC; ten grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Woodrow S. Cooley and Woodrow Madden.

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at Beulah Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

HILDA MCFARLAND BAKER

Hilda Baker, formerly of Williamston, died Jan. 19, 2006 in Houston, TX.

She was born in Strasburg, VA.

She is survived by one sister, Jeannette Smith of Washington, DC; two children, Joan Keown of Houston, TX and Carlton “Butch” Baker of Greenville; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, E. Carlton Baker.

Chapel and funeral services will be held Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Point of Rocks Maryland.

Loudoun Funeral Chapel will be handling arrangements, Leesburg, VA.


EXTON ELLENBURG

Exton Earl “Pud” Ellenburg, 75, husband of Joyce Ann Smith Ellenburg, of Williamston, died Jan. 23, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Raymond Watson and Edna Davis Ellenburg. He served in the Williamston National Guard and retired from Gerber Childrenswear. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Williamston.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by daughters, Diana Shepherd of Rockwood, TN, Angie Corey of Aiken; son, Tony Ellenburg of Williamston, Dennis Ellenburg of Williamston; brothers, Dave Ellenburg, Wayne Ellenburg, both of Williamston, Jack Ellenburg, Joe Ellenburg, both of Belton; sisters, Dolly Lowe of Williamston, Bobbie Lou Hawkins of Anderson; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
