Charles Francis Evington, 82, of Liberty, died Jan. 16, 2007 at Palmetto Health Baptist. Born in Greenville, he was the widower of Jane Greene Evington, and a son of the late Wallace Ellis and Nancy Belcher Evington. He retired from the U.S. Army serving in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He also retired from the Greenville County School District. Surviving are four daughters, Tracy Taylor of Six Mile, Linda Searcy of Mill Spring, NC, Maryanne Phillips of Williamston, and Charlene Miller of Liberty; stepson, Joseph Russell of Quincy, MA; two sisters, Juanita Bailey and Faye Evington, both of Taylors; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held Jan. 19 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial followed with full military honors at Graceland East Memorial Park. Anita P. Crook, 66, of Piedmont, died Jan. 14, 2007. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Wilton Ernest and Evelyn Turner Posey. She retired from the garment industry in California. Surviving are son, Brian E. Crook of Piedmont; two daughters, Susan L. Johnson of Vista, CA and Patricia A. Bryant of Sacramento, CA; a brother, Phillip E. Posey of Columbia; four grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest E. Crook. Roy Edward Sisk, Jr., 57, husband of Phyllis Bagwell Sisk, of Williamston, died Jan. 17, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of Lena Etrulia Trudy Owens Smith and the late Roy Edward Sisk, Sr. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church and a US Marine Vietnam Veteran. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are daughter, April Huskey Hays of Williamston; two grandchildren; sisters, Diane Guthrie and Melody Robertson, both of Belton. He was predeceased by his stepfather. Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Jennie Vermelle Johnson Brown Ellis, 85, of Williamston, died Jan. 16, 2007 at the home of her daughter in Greenville. She was a member of Bethel U.M. Church in Williamston. She is survived by her daughter, Faye Dillard and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at New Prospect Baptist Church in Williamston. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Brenda Jeanette Keeler Raines, 60, wife of Larry Junior Raines, died Jan. 17, 2007 at her home. Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Jefferson and Hazel Crymes Keeler. She was formerly employed by Cushman Mills and attended Pleasant View Wesleyan Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Tracy Large, Jason Raines, both of Pelzer, Greg Gilreath of Piedmont; brother, Gene Keeler of Pelzer; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
Wallace Sutt Elmer Suddeth, 84, of Pelzer, died Jan. 17, 2007 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Horace Pinkney and Lillie Meadows Suddeth. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, formerly owned and operated Old Hundred Grocery Store, and attended Pelzer United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Graveside services were held Jan. 20 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice Foundation, 4006 E. PELZER, Lois Irene Dickerson Rogers, wife of Wayne J. Rogers of Cherokee Road, passed away January 20, 2007 at her home. Born September 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ezra Lee Dickerson and Ethel Lee Clardy Dickerson. Mrs. Rogers graduated from White Plains High School in the class of 1937 and from Lander College in the class of 1940. She taught math in Anderson County for 43 years, with 40 of these years being in Anderson County School District One. She also taught over 20 years at the Career Center, finishing her teaching career at the age of 81. In 1990 she was recognized by the state as Part-Time Adult Education Teacher of the Year, and in 2001 she was awarded the South Carolina Order of the Silver Crescent by Governor Jim Hodges. As a young girl she joined Shiloh Methodist Church. After her marriage to Wayne Rogers on June 8, 1946, she joined Beaverdam Baptist Church where she remained active as long as her health permitted, serving through the years as a Sunday School teacher and Childrens Church and Bible School worker. Survivors in addition to her husband include two daughters, Bridget Lee Bradley and her husband David of Loganville, Georgia, Laura Jo Evans and her husband Marty of Pelzer; one son, Anthony Tony Wayne Rogers of Pelzer; two granddaughters, Amanda Larkin Bradley and Mary-Cate Rogers; a brother, William T. Bill Dickerson and his wife Georgia of Pacolet; and a sister, Frankie Dickerson Murphy and her husband Durane of Belton. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Aldin Dickerson and Lee Oddis Dickerson. Her many roles in life included daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, teacher, friend, and Christian. She performed each role in an outstanding way and will be remembered lovingly by all those whose lives she touched. The family will receive friends at Gray Mortuary in Pelzer from 3 - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral services were held at Beaverdam Baptist Church at 3:30 Monday and conducted by Rev. Jimmie Farmer. Burial followed at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the home. Corporal Phil Daniel Cox, 70, husband of Donna Sellers Cox of Williamston, died Jan. 21, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Toliver Daniel and Susan Maye Pippens Cox. He was an Insurance Salesman for Liberty Life and a member of Williamston First Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are: daughters, Vicki Harris of Anderson, Kathy Cabaniss of Williamston; son, Mark Cox of Williamston; six grandchildren; and one sister, Janice Parks of La Grange, GA. Charles Mike Michael Martin, 50, of Williamston, died Jan. 19, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson County, he was son of Hazel McCuen Bryant and the late Charles Ray Martin. Surviving are a son, Johnathan Bridges of Pelzer; mother of the home; sisters, Sandra Milton, Terry Austin, both of Williamston. Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.
Florence Genevieve Campbell McGarrah, formerly of Pelzer, died Jan. 20, 2007 at National Health Care in Greer. Born in Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late John Filmore and Lydia Amelia Morrow Campbell. She was a homemaker and a member of Augusta Road United Methodist Church. Surviving is a sister, Lydia Columbine Groves of East Brady, PA. Graveside services were held Jan. 22 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Flora J. Grayden, 83, of Pelzer, died Jan. 16, 2007 at St. Francis Womens and Childrens Hospital. Born in Laurens County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Salley Carter Todd. Surviving are daughter, Willie Jean Perrett of Honea Path, Ozella Grayden of Pelzer and Barbara G. Garrett of Taylors; sons, Norman Grayden of Piedmont and Ernest Grayden of Mauldin; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Jan. 20 at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Garden.
Willie R. Smith, 71, of Abbeville, husband of Martha S. Smith, died Jan. 19, 2007 at his home. Born in Pelzer to the late R.S. and Ethel Hall Smith, he attended Stone of Bethel Holiness Church and retired from GTE. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard. He is survived by his wife of the home; four daughters, Marie Watt of Anderson, Annette Walters of Mocksville, NC, Yvonne Landers of Pelzer and Tonya Heaton of Greenwood; brother, Lecille Smith of Fountain Inn; sister, Margaret Shaver of Ware Shoals; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 22 in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Shirley Hammond Looper, 71 formerly of Dunean, died Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Magnolia Manor. Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late James F. and Lillie Bell Hammond, and wife of the late John H. Looper, Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Ragsdale of Easley and Gale Keech of Piedmont; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 24, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Jack Randal Whitehead Jr. of Easley and husband of Mary Catherine Sons Whitehead, died Sunday, January 21, 2007. Son of Jack Randal Whitehead Sr. and the late Mae Miller Whitehead. He was a retired businessman, a U. S. Navy Veteran of Korean Conflict. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church . Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are sons, Jack Randall Whitehead III of Pelzer, and David Andrew Whitehead of Easley; daughters; Celeste W. Harris of Pickens and Tammy W. Tyssen of Dacusville; brother; Robert Miller Whitehead of Brandon, MS; sister, Carol Rose Murphy of Hattiesburg MS; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were Wednesday Jan. 24, at Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial was in Church Cemetery. Buddy Vondenburg Bear, 76, of Piedmont, husband of Judith White Bear, died January 23, 2007 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. He was twice married, first to the late Myra Bryant Bear. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Lem Rufus Bear and Lorena Thomason Bear Kelley. He was a U.S. Army veteran and owner/operator of Buddys Floor Covering in Williamston and Carpet Distributors in Easley. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Vonda Evatt of Spartanburg; son Kenneth Bear of Pelzer; sister, Christine Carnes of Belton; and five grandsons. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. Minnie Jane MaMa Martin Dean Snipes, 99, formerly of Piedmont, widow of Francis Harrison Dean, died January 23, 2007 at Summit Place in Simpsonville. Born in Banks County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Monroe S. and Susannah Free Martin. She retired from the Kendall Company. She was a member of Daventon Baptist Church and later joined Washington Baptist. Surviving are a son, Mell Vernon Joe Dean of Sebring, FL; daughter, Virginia Cox of Camden, Gwendolyn Ragnone of Portland, OR, Barbara Elaine Moon of Pelzer, Virginia Agee Dean of Piedmont; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
