DAVID A. JACKSON

David A. Jackson, 80, of Williamston, died Jan. 26, 2008.

Funeral service was held Feb. 1 at The Unity Mortuary in Williamston.  

Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


BILL CALVERT

William “Bill” Earl Calvert, 73,  husband of Susan Davenport Calvert, of Pelzer, died Jan. 30, 2008 at his home.

Born in Spartanburg, he was a son of the late Jessie Homer and Cora Lee Calvert. He retired from Fluor Daniel.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Heather Lashae Calvert of the home; son, William Travis Calvert; sisters, Myrtle Hughes of Union, Edna Lemons of Mountville; brothers, Bootie Calvert of Laurens, Robert Calvert, and Aulbury Calvert of Woodruff.

No services are planned at this time.

Gray Mortuary, Pelzer is in charge of arrangements.


HARDY STEWART, SR.

Hardy Grover Stewart, Sr., 60, husband of Barbara Jean Matthews Stewart, of Pelzer, died Jan. 28, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of Julia Sue Clark Stewart of Greenville and the late Jack Henry Stewart. He was formerly employed by Belton Metal and a member of Cornerstone Community Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by sons, Hardy G. Stewart, Jr., of Eden, WI, Darrell Stewart of Enoree, Dale Stewart of Inman; daughter, Patricia Garrett of Pelzer; brothers, Boyd Stewart of Pelzer, Jackie Stewart of Greer; sisters, Judy Jones, Amelia Gray, Sharon Plumley, all of Pelzer; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 1 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Fort Prince Memorial Gardens in Welford.

JACK GOLDEN

James Jackson “Jack” Golden, 85, formerly of Williamston, widower of Hazel Buchanan Golden, died Jan. 30, 2008 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Bessie Mae Shannon Golden. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and formerly owned and operated the Bantam Chef Restaurants. He was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by brothers, Joe R. Golden of Belton and Billy Golden of Williamston.

Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at Big Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

SUSIE GARRETT

Susie Whitsel Garrett, 87, of Pelzer, widow of Leonard Garrett, Jr., died Jan. 29, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Franklin County, GA, she was a daughter of the late William Albert and Maggie Louisa Hanley Whitsel. She retired from Palmetto High School and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer.

She is survived by a son, Gilbert Garrett of Pelzer; sister, Dorothy Brawner of Commerce, GA; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.


JAMES CROWDER

James Henry Crowder, 69, husband of Mildred S. Nichols Crowder, of Pelzer, died Jan. 31, 2008 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was son of the late Marcus Gordon and Eva Frances King Crowder. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and formerly worked for Pierce Young Angel.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, John Ronnie Crowder of Williamston, Robert Daniel Crowder of Piedmont; sisters, Ruby F. Taylor of Whiteville, NC, Lou Ellen Creech of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held Feb. 2 at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Pelzer.


VIOLA S. DAY

Viola S. Day, 93, widow of Bartrand W. Day of Pickens, died Feb. 2, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Judge Grady Simmons and Kizzie Arnold Simmons. She was a member of Griffin Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara Day of Pickens, Brenda Wires of Pickens; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Feb. 5 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

JAMES L. GARRETT

James Lewis Garrett, 72, of Easley, died Jan. 31, 2008 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center Easley.

Born in Easley, he was the son of the late James P. and Willie Pickens Garrett, member of Easley Union Missionary Baptist Church. He was retired from Alice Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Blanden Garrett of the home; daughter, Carol Denise Garrett of Liberty; son, Alfred D. Garrett of Cary, NC; sisters, Betty Jamison of California and Peggy Holcombe of Easley; brothers, Roy Lee Garrett of Piedmont and Robert Garrett of Chicago; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at Easley Union Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.


NELLIE PITTMAN DUNCAN

Nellie Pittman Duncan, 66, wife of Ralph Dewett Duncan of Piedmont, died Feb. 2, 2008 at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Alex Bunyan and Sybil Jones Pittman. She was a member of Assembly of God and a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Ralph James Duncan of Piedmont; daughters, Nettie Annette Johnson of Easley, Debbie L. Lindley of Charleston and Gloria Chandler of Williamston; brothers, Marvin Pittman of Williamston and James Pittman of VA; sisters, Mildred Herndon of Belton, Elizabeth Williams of Travelers Rest and Beatrice Kelly of Belton; and five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Feb. 6 at Belton Cemetery.


RUFUS ERSKINE

William Rufus Erskine, Sr., 79, of Belton, died Jan. 30, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late C.D. and Ruth Marchbanks Erskine. He was the retired owner of Erskine’s Auto Rental. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Belton.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Mitchell Erskine of the home; a daughter, Carol Erskine Harris of Belton; sisters, Sara E. Wilson of Belton, Edith E. Gantt of Blackville and Laura Ann E. Kay of Belton; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service  was held Feb. 2 at Second Baptist Church of Belton. Interment followed in Garden of Memories.

TWEETER HEMBREE HOOPER

Tweeter Hembree Hooper, 95, of Greenville, died Jan. 30, 2008.

Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Anthony Baylus Hembree and Essie Cornelia Hardy Hembree and wife of the late Ben Herman Hooper, Sr.

She retired from Judson Mill and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Bobbi Greenwood of Greenville, Sue Dickerson of Piedmont, Janet Wike of Easley, Evelyn Radcliffe of Myrtle Beach and Frankie Kelly of Fountain Inn; son, Ben H. Hooper, Jr. of Goose Creek; a brother, Ernie Hembree of Anderson; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Feb. 2 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed at Graceland Cemetery, West.

WANDA MOORE

Wanda Amelia Moore, 56, of Easley, died Feb. 1, 2008 at her home.

Born in Six Mile, a daughter of the late John D. and Mary Frances Carver Moore, she was a homemaker and a member of Open Arms Community Church.

Surviving are two sons, Bradley Scott Camp and Willam Bryan Daniel, both of Easley; a daughter, Sonja Renee Cox of Easley; two sisters, Edith Marie Morris of Piedmont and Sue Ellen Matthews of Seneca and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Feb. 4 at Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson.

DR. MARY ‘BETH’ DURHAM SIMPSON

Dr. Mary “Beth” Durham Simpson, 39, wife of Jeff C. Simpson of Abbeville, died Feb. 2, 2008 at the home of her parents, Harold and Mary Ann Durham in Williamston.

She was a chiropractor at Palmetto Family Medical Group in Williamston. She was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God in Pelzer.

In addition to her husband and parents she is survived by four brothers, Mark Durham of James Island, Dr. Mack Durham of Williamston; Dr. Matthew Durham and Mickey Durham of Anderson.

Funeral services were held Feb. 3 at Guthrie Grove Church of God in Pelzer. Burial followed in Long Cane Cemetery in Abbeville.

HENRY T. MCCLELLION

Henry Thomas McClellion, 86, formerly of Pelzer, widower of Claudia Kathleen Nichols McClellion, died Feb. 1, 2008 at Riverside Living Center.

Born in Williamston, he was a  son of the late Thomas Weston and Elizabeth Mackey McClellion. He was a World War II Army veteran, retired General Manager from Auction Recon in Greenville and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Kay Harris of Easley, Beth Pagan of Townville; sister, Ruth Martin of Columbia; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 4 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

MARGARET T. JACKSON

Margaret T. Jackson, 58, of Greenville, died Jan. 31, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Paul and Izona Williams Turmon.

Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Edwards of Piedmont; special daughters, Kim McIntyre of Piedmont and Cassandra Simmons of Easley; sons, Kenneth and Jonathan Turmon, both of Easley and Rodney Turmon of Arlington, TX; sisters, Bertha Graves of Virginia, Georgia Perkins and Dorothy Miles, both of Greenville, and Annie Lizzie Turmon of Powdersville; brothers, Roosevelt Turmon, R.T. Turmon and George Turmon, all of Greenville, James Turmon of Piedmont and Cpt. William Turmon of Columbia; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in New Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.


ADDIE BROOKS

Addie Mae Lollis Brooks, 90, widow of Rev. Claude Obidiah Brooks, formerly of Williamston, died Feb. 2, 2008 at National Health Care in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mellie M. Smith Lollis. She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle in Piedmont.

Surviving are her children, son, Thomas Brooks of Williamston; daughters, Frances Staton of Liberty and Wanda Vest of Williamston; step-son, Charles R. Brooks of Greenville; step-daughters, Violet Seely of Liberty, Oleen Garner of Pelzer.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle Church. Burial followed in  Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Williamston.
