March 22, 1927 - February 6, 2007 WEST PELZER, SC - Annie Wilma Brown Dalrymple, 79, of West Pelzer, wife of Charles Dalrymple, died Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate after a brief illness. Mrs. Dalrymple was born March 22, 1927 in Belton to the Rev. Thomas L. and Susie Bannister Brown. She was a life-long homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Piedmont where she so loved singing in the choir and was a member of the Mothers Mission for Jesus Sunday School Class. In addition to her husband of 61 years, Mrs. Dalrymple is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Danny Bell of West Pelzer, Janett and Jackie Bracken of Honea Path; son, Charlie Dalrymple of Belton; son and daughter-in-law, Rodger and Rene Dalrymple of West Pelzer; grandchildren and their spouses, Dale Mahaffey and wife Lisa, Susan Cepek and husband Bo, Michael Mahaffey and wife Leah, Beth Lynch and husband Rocky, all of West Pelzer, Billy Meeks and wife Julie of Comer, GA; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dalrymple was predeceased by daughter, Ann Meeks; son-in-law, Bill Meeks; infant son, Billy Dalrymple; daughter-in-law, Kathy Elgin Dalrymple; sister, Vivian Brown; and an infant brother. Funeral services were held Feb. 9 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the Rev. Leon Porter and the Rev. Bill Bryant officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. John Calvin Traynum, Jr., 87, husband of Jessie Mae Moore Traynum, of Piedmont, died Feb. 6, 2007 at Riverside Living Center. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late John Calvin, Sr. and Lula Spearman Traynum. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a retired farmer, and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, John C. Traynum, III of Piedmont; and twin sister, Martha Edna Traynum Mulkey of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Feb. 9 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Carrie Lou Bit Lollis Burroughs, 85, of West Pelzer, widow of Thomas Richard Dick Burroughs, died Feb. 7, 2007 at Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Ware Shoals, she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Nora David Lollis. She retired from the Kendall Company and was a member of Bessie Road Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters, Peggy Scott, Deborah McGuffin, both of Pelzer; son, Richard Gary Burroughs of Salisbury, NC; sister, Grace Owens of Piedmont; brothers, Truman Lollis of Pelzer, Raymond Lollis of Simpsonville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Carlos Ervin Cooley, 61, died Feb. 6, 2007 in Clinton. Born in lower Greenville County, he was a son of the late Nicodemus E. and Lela Phillips Cooley. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are brothers, James Cooley and Wilton Cooley, both of Belton, Charles Cooley of Waterloo, Ray Cooley of Greer; and sister, Virginia King of Simpsonville. Funeral services were held Feb. 8 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. George W. Barter, 56, of Piedmont, died Jan. 13, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Piedmont. Memorial services were held Feb. 10 at Abner Creek Baptist Church in Greer.
Violia Myrtle Durham Hart, 82, wife of Olan Hart of Pendleton, died Feb. 5, 2007 at her home. Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late William F. Durham and Ruby Mae Haynie Durham. She retired from textiles and was a member of Faith Fellowship Church in Pendleton. Surviving are her husband, Olan Hart of the home; sons, Danny Ray Hart, Ronald T. Hart and Jerry D. Hart; daughter, Joyce Myrtle Adams, all of Pendleton; brother, Harold B. Durham of Pendleton; sisters, Betty Seawright of Pelzer, Rina Lee Porter and Catherine Smith, both of Pendleton; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 7 at Faith Fellowship Church. Interment followed in Memory Gardens in Clemson.
Johnny Ray Watkins, I, 62, of Liberty, died Feb. 7, 2007, at his home. Born in Cherokee, NC, a son of Evangeline Beck Chappell of Easley, and the late George Watkins, he was an electrician with Roach Construction Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He also served with the U.S. Navy. Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons, Johnny Ray Watkins, II of Piedmont and James Bradley Watkins of Liberty; two daughters, Carla Marie McAlister of Easley and Valerie Kaye Hughes of Piedmont; six brothers, Harold Watkins of Texas, Kenneth Watkins, Gary Chappell, Mike Chappell, and Tony Chappell, all of Easley, and Dennis Chappell of Greenville; two sisters, Beatrice Roach of Easley and Sherry Robinson of Greenville; and eight grandchildren. Graveside services were held Feb. 9 at Tow String Cemetery in Cherokee, NC.
Robert Marshall Stone, Sr., 98, of Starr, died Feb. 6, 2007 at his home. He was born in the Lebanon Community of Anderson County, a son of the late Robert C. Stone and Mary Johnson Stone. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Starr United Methodist Church. He was a teacher and retired as Principal of Crescent High School. He also taught in the Pelzer school system. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Bess Jones Stone. He is survived by his daughter, Sammy Jo Smith of Rockford, TN; sister, Myra Glasco of Greenwood; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Feb. 8 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Joyce Elizabeth Miller Wood, 67, of Greer, died Feb. 6, 2007 at her home. A native of Greenville County, daughter of the late James Charles and Margaret Elizabeth Wakefield Miller, she was retired from Dow Chemical and a member of Pelham First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, James Thomas Wood of the home; a brother, Gary Miller of Greer; three sisters, Viola Gail McClain of Greer, Linda Ann Moody of Lyman and Patricia Dale Reeves of Blue Ridge; and one grandson. Ansel Clyde Dempsey, 75, of Piedmont, died Feb. 6, 2007. Born in LaFrance, he was the son of the late Rev. G.F. Dempsey and Ruth Porter Dempsey. He served in the U.S. Marines and was a member of Mauldin Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Wilma Carrouth Dempsey of the home; two daughters, Patti McCoy of Pickens and Paula Whitley of Greenville; a son, Ansel Dempsey, Jr. of Kennesaw, GA; four sisters, Glaidelle Hamlet of Irmo, Joyce Meeks of Spartanburg, Barbara Dempsey of Columbia and Donna Petras of Chicago, IL; a brother, Frank Dempsey of Columbia; and four grandchildren. Nurell Lee Monroe, 71, of Piedmont, husband of Janice Smith Monroe, died Feb. 4, 2007 at his home. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Nancy Abigail Monroe. He was a member of Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle. Surviving are his wife of the home; seven step-sons; three step-daughters; three sisters, Jane Evatt of Belton, Ruth Locke and Betty Owens of Piedmont. Ethel Hawthorne, 89, of Greenville, died Feb. 6, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Plum Branch, she was the daughter of the late Scott and Georgia Ferguson Wells. Surviving are three daughters, Thomasenia Jackson and Wilhelmena Williams, both of Greenville and Gwendolyn Hawthorne of Piedmont; granddaughter reared in the home, Anita Talbert; son, Thomas Hawthorne Jr. of Greenville; grandson reared in the home, Michael Hawthorne; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Feb. 10 at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
Marie Brock Gilreath, 74, widow of Thomas Gilreath, Sr. of Belton, died Feb. 12, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Abbeville County, she was the daughter of the late Todd and Emma Smith Brock. She worked in Textiles and was a member of Belton Church of God. Surviving are son, Ricky Wooten of Belton; daughters, Debra Patrick and Melody Finley of Belton, Kim Engram of Williamston; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry Brock of Due West, Ollie Brock and Bruce Brock of Honea Path; sisters, Lois Hall, Evelyn Parrish, Martha Gambrell and Christine Johns, all of Honea Path. She was predeceased by her first husband, T.A. Wooten. Graveside services were held Feb. 14 at Garden of Memories.Nathaniel C. Knight, Jr. Nathaniel Christopher Knight, Jr., 78, of Belton, husband of Rosa Dean Knight, died Feb. 13, 2007 at his home. Born in Pelham, he was a son of the late Nathaniel Christopher, Sr. and Dicey Ferguson Knight. He was a retired Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and a Vietnam veteran. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Wanda Neely of Williamston; sons, Sammy Knight, Ricky Knight, both of Belton; brother, Douglas Knight of Pelzer; sisters, Evelyn Locke, Jean Walker, both of Pelzer, Betty Sue Dalrymple of Williamston; and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Feb. 15 at Gray Mortuary. Cryptside services with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. WILLIAMSTON - Paul Keith Janssen, 53, of 8 Janssen Court, husband of Vicki Mahaffey Janssen, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was a son of Mary Bagwell Janssen Stelling and the late Herbert William Janssen. He was currently employed with Michelin Tire Company in Greenville and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Keith, Jr. and Amy Janssen of Williamston; son, Ryan Janssen of the home; his mother of Norwich, Connecticut; two brothers, Carl Janssen of Honea Path, Leon Stelling, Jr. of West Pelzer; two sisters, Donna Vaughn of Williamston, Karen Lozada of Norwich, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Maggie Janssen and Brooks Janssen. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Jeffrey Giguere of the Cancer Center of the Carolinas and the fifth floors of St. Francis and Greenville Memorial Hospitals for all the care and concern shown to Mr. Janssen and his family during his illness. William Harry Junior Whitlock, Jr., 69, of Piedmont, husband of Mary Yvonne Gambrell Whitlock, died Feb. 10, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late William Harry, Sr. and Clara Florence Trotter Whitlock. He was formerly employed with J.P. Stevens Estes Plant and a member of Southside Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; three daughters, Sherry Mitchell and Jean Reid, both of Piedmont, Elaine Reid of Belton; sister, Shelby Davis of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Lewis S. Williams, 78, of Easley, widower of Martha Cooley Williams, died Feb. 10, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Reuben and Beulah Emery Williams. He was retired from Cryovac in Simpsonville, a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Belton and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are daughter, Cathy Thompson of Easley; son, Mike Williams of Greenville; two brothers; four sisters; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Melvin C. Long, 74, husband of Anne Browning Long, died Feb. 9, 2007. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James A. and Bertha Coleman Long. He was formerly employed with Clemson University. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clemson and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Amy Fogle and Cindy Reagle; and five grandchildren. Private services were held.
John Henry Junior Davis, Jr., 62, of Greenville, died Feb. 9, 2007. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late John Henry Davis, Sr. and Emmie Sue Banks Davis. He retired from W.W. Grainger and was a member of Leawood Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Sonja Rivers Davis of the home; two daughters, Tonya Davis of Greenville and Billie Garrett of Easley; and a brother, Jerry Davis of Pelzer. Graveside services were held Feb. 11 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
Martha Ruth Hamby Baker Landolfi, 84, of Anderson, died Feb. 11, 2007 at the Hospice House. Born in Manchester, GA, she was a daughter of the late David Turner Hamby and Odessa Phillips Hamby. She worked in textiles for many years and was also a caregiver. She was a member of the River of Life Church of God. Surviving are a son, La Dane Baker of Williamston; daughters, Carolyn Baker Freeman, Jean Baker Frost and Grace Baker Luper, all of Anderson; ten grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Cecil L. Baker; and her second husband, John N. Landolfi. Funeral service was held Feb. 13 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed in New Silverbrook Cemetery. Bobbie Jean West Bolden, 57, of Pelzer, died Feb. 11, 2007 at her home. Born in Pelzer, she was daughter of Martha Bair Henderson and the late L. J. West. Surviving in addition to her mother are step-father, Heyward Henderson of Pelzer; daughters, Kim Brown of Belton, Sonya Jackson of Pelzer; step-daughters, Terri Alexander, Lynn Bolden, both of Pelzer; brothers, Steve West of Pelzer, Wayne Henderson of Greenville; and nine grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following services at the graveside.
William W. Bill Landreth, Sr., 82, of Piedmont, died Feb. 10, 2007. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late William Robert Landreth and Etta Matthews Landreth. He retired as a master plumber and was a member of the Gospel Emmanuel Tabernacle in Greer. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran during World War II and Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife, Jewell Eaton Landreth of the home; a son, William Wayne Landreth Jr. of Simpsonville; daughter, Linda Landreth Henderson, of Powdersville; three brothers, James Landreth of Piedmont, Bobby Landreth of Greenville and George Landreth of Dacusville; two sisters, Eva Mae Landreth of Greenville and Pat Lewis of Travelers Rest; and four grandchildren. Raymond Edward Eddie Garrison, Jr., 60, husband of Jane Meeks Garrison, of Williamston, died at his home on Feb. 12, 2007. Born in Pelzer, he was the son of the late Raymond Edward, Sr. and Lucy Garner Garrison. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and a member of Williamston Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by sons, Andy Garrison of Anderson, Todd Garrison of Williamston; sister, Barbara Johnson of Pelzer; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
John Coleman Crenshaw, Jr., 62, died Feb. 11, 2007. Born in Walhalla, he was the only child of John Crenshaw Sr. and the late Ethel Annie Epps Collins. He worked with G&M Mechanical before going into business for himself. In addition to his father of Atlanta, he is survived by his wife, Pat Crenshaw of Powdersville; two sons, John Crenshaw, III of Berea and Keith Crenshaw of Simpsonville; and daughter, Chasta Vest of Powdersville; and six grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Powdersville. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Daisy B. Henderson, 82, widow of Billy W. Henderson, died Feb. 11, 2007 at NHC in Laurens. Born in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and mary Waldrop Hughes. She was a member of Lucas Avenue Baptist Church and retired from the textile industry. Surviving are a son, Billy R. Henderson of Laurens; three daughters, Linda Krohl, Sandra Jones, both of Gray Court and Jerry Starnes of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Teddie Joe Garrett, Jr., 39, of Williamston, died Feb. 11, 2007 at his home. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of Rose Mary Hart Garrett and the late Teddie Joe Garrett, Sr. He was employed with North American Rescue Products and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his mother, of Travelers Rest; sister, Deborah Matthews of Travelers Rest; and a brother, Shane Garrett of Travelers Rest. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at The Howze Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Harold Burton Holbrook, 85, of Piedmont, died Feb. 11, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital. A native of Greenville County, he was the widower of Ruth Perry Holbrook, and son of the late William E. and Grace D. Holbrook. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Greenville and retired from Milliken and Company, Judson Plant. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. during World War II. Surviving are two sons, Harold Holbrook, Jr. of Cottage Grove, Oregon and Donald Holbrook of Greenville; a brother, Pat C. Holbrook of Greenville; sister, Edwina H. Murphy of Piedmont; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at The Mackey Mortuary. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
