MATTHEW CROSBY

Matthew Crosby, 76, formerly of Anderson, died Feb. 20, 2006 at Greenville Living Center in Greenville.

Born in Anderson County, he was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He retired from Childs Vault Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his daughters, Bertha Crosby and Priscilla Williams, both of Anderson; son, Matthew Crosby Jr. of Anderson; sister, Maryjean Crosby Heard of Williamston; brothers, John Roman Crosby, Esau Crosby, Milton Crosby and Nathan Crosby, all of Anderson, Timothy Crosby of Jamaica, NY, Mose Thomas Crosby of Ratcliff, KY, and Cornell Crosby of Augusta, GA; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Mose and Rosa Bell Thompson Crosby.

He was predeceased by his widow, Esterlean Kay Crosby.

Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at W.I. Peek and F.W. Jackson Memorial Chapel of The Unity Mortuary of Anderson. Burial followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.


REV. THONAL EDWARDS, SR.

Rev. Thonal Edwards, Sr., of Greenville, died Feb. 19, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Washington, DC, he was a son of Benjamin Edwards, Sr. and the late Parthenia Ruffin Edwards. He was the pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Williamston.

Surviving are wife, Deborah Williams Edwards; daughters, Katrina Robinson of Washington, DC and April Edwards of the home; son, Thonal Edwards, Jr. of the home; godson, Marlo Abraham of Greenville; sisters, Nadine Rawls and Shirley Fox, both of Silversprings, MD and Mary Richards of Washington, DC; brother, Benjamin Edwards Jr. of Washington, DC; and four grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Feb. 25 at Aiken Chapel Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


THOMAS “BILL” OWENS

PELZER, Thomas “Bill” Clifton Owens, 90, of 105 Ballard Road, widower of Blanche Alma James Owens, died Sunday, February 26, 2006 at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Grover Henry and Nina Lee Lollis Owens. He was retired from Cushman Mills, a WW II Army Veteran, a member of New Hope Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two daughters, Rachel Jackson, Alma Jean and her husband Billy Ray Davenport, all of Pelzer; son and his wife, John Furman and Diane Owens of Belton; three sisters, Margaret Browning, Jennie Ruth Stevens of Pelzer, Vannie Lou Stone of Piedmont; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson Tommy Jackson; two brothers; and two sisters.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Burton, Rev. Bill Bryant and Mr. Bill Cox officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends Monday at Gray Mortuary.

CARLTON ‘SAM’ HARPER

Carlton E. V. “Sam” Harper, 77, formerly of Williamston, died Feb. 24, 2006 at St. Joseph Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Fred and Ida Mae Sammons Harper. He was retired from Cushman Mills.

Surviving are three brothers, Truman Harper of Pelzer, Robert Harper of Belton, Tommy Earl Harper of Fair Play; two sisters, Dolly Winiecki of Williamston and Sue Kelly of Belton.

Graveside services were held Feb. 26 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

EDNA WEATHERS

Edith Edna Stansell Weathers, 83, of Pelzer, widow of Robert Herman Weathers, died Feb. 25, 2006 at Bellaire Place Assisted Living.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Furman “Hobb” McMillian and Carrie Bell Hedden Stansell. She was retired from Swirl Manufacturing Company and a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Judy Biser of Simpsonville, Susan Williams of Piedmont, Lynn Mayfield of Simpsonville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Feb. 27 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Washington Baptist Church Cemetery.

LAUNA HUDSON WEST

Launa Hudson West, 91, of Greenville, widow of Guy L. West, died Feb. 24, 2006.

Born in Easley, she was the daughter of the late Reverend D. P. Hudson and Annie Abercrombie Hudson.

She retired from Pleasantburg Fabrics. She was a member of Laurens Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Linda Dilleshaw of Greenville; daughter, Judy Snipes of Pelzer; and sister, Estella Evans of Six Mile.

Memorials may be made to Laurens Road United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 5494, Greenville, SC 29606.

Funeral services were held Feb. 27 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.


ANNE B. BRIDGES

Annie Bell Bridges, 88, a resident of Laurel Baye, died Feb. 25, 2006.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late William Preston Bridges and Sara Elizabeth Devore Bridges.

She was employed by Dan River.

She was a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church.

Surviving is her sister, Myrtle Farr Chapman of Greenville.

A graveside service was held Feb. 28 at Springwood Cemetery.


JOSEPH J. MULLIN

Joseph “Joe” John Mullin, 71, of Piedmont, died Feb. 23, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Quincy, MA, he was the son of the late Kevin Julian and Margaret Steadman Mullin. He was a contract designer draftsman and was a Catholic. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Hebbard Mullin of the home; two stepdaughters, Margaret Jean “Kat” McCord of Treasure Island, FL, and Lisa Jayne Ormond of Lakeland, FL; a stepson, David Bruce Herold of Lakeland, FL; a sister, Catherine  Maliawcu of Brockston, MA; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Florida.

ADA MARIE HOWARD MASON

Ada Marie Howard Mason, 94, of Greenville, died Feb. 25, 2006.

Born in Anderson County, she was the widow of John H. Mason and the daughter of the late William Samuel and Alice Burgess Howard.

She retired from Brandon Mill and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Bertha M. Tinsley and Christine M. Murrell; a son, Howard W. “Buddy” Mason of Belton; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 28 at the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed at Graceland Cemetery, West.


HARVEY R. JOYNER

Harvey Randolph “Randy” Joyner, 65, of Piedmont, died Feb. 27, 2006.

Born in Wilson, NC, he was a son of the late Arlie Washington Joyner Sr. and Lillian Bell Worrell Joyner.

A U.S. Army veteran, he retired from the textile industry. He attended Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Strickland Joyner of the home; a son, Jack Joyner of Pelzer; sisters, Marie Leggins of Elm City, NC, Susie Strickland of Wilson, NC, and Peggy Pridgen of Lucama, NC; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Philadelphia Baptist Church, Nashville, NC at a later date.

ERMA JEAN STACY

Erma Jean Harris Stacy, 61, of Pelzer, died Feb. 27, 2006.

Born in Lenoir, NC, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Zina Abel Harris.

She was an employee of Magna Corporation and was a member of Washington Baptist Church in Pelzer.

Surviving are sons, Todd Stacy of Pelzer, Tobby Stacy of Pelzer, and Tommy Stacy of Williamston; five grandchildren; brothers, Dean Harris and Steve Harris, both of Easley, David Harris of Simpsonville; sisters, Barbara Owings of Easley and Patsy Chambers of Greenville.

She was predeceased by her husband, Damon Charles Stacy.

Funeral services were held Mar. 1 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery, West.


HARRIET F. DAVIS HUMPHLETT

Harriet Finley Davis Humphlett, 91, of Aiken, died Feb. 25, 2006.

Graveside services were held Feb. 28 at Historic Bethany Cemetery in downtown Aiken. Funeral service followed the interment at First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her children, Nancy Hughes Thorne of Aiken, Margaret Crutchfield of Herndon, VA, Katherine Davis of Atlanta and Henry W. Davis of Greenville; three grandchildren; a sister, Sarah Bennett of Piedmont.

ZORA M. WILSON AVERY

Zora M. Wilson Avery, of Pelzer, died Feb. 25, 2006 at her home.

A daughter of the late John Henry Wilson and Viola Jackson Wilson, she was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Pelzer and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Avery of the home; a son, Charles Caleb Avery of Pelzer; three daughters, Shirley Avery Bolden of Taylors, Yvonne Avery Marshall of Pelzer and Amy Avery of Greenville; six brothers, C.C. Wilson, Billy Joe Wilson, Charlie Wilson and Odell Wilson of Greenville and Arthur Wilson and Ben Wilson of Piedmont; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Mar. 1 at Shady Grove Baptist Church.


ARNOLD MASSEY

Arnold Massey, 88, of Toccoa, GA, died Feb. 28, 2006 at his home.

Born in Stephens County, he was a son of the late Abner Lee and Rilla Thomas Massey. He was retired from Coats & Clark, was a U.S. Air Force WW II veteran and a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Hazel Hicks Massey.

Surviving are his wife, Jannett Rice Thomason Massey of the home; daughter, Frances M. Whitt of Williamston; son, Harold Massey of Toccoa; step-son, Anthony Thomason of Toccoa; stepdaughters, Shirley Carter and Sheila Hopkins, both of Toccoa; sister, Pearl Massey Haddock of Toccoa; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Mar. 2 in the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary. Burial will follow in in Stephens Memorial Gardens.


JIMMY A. MERRITT

Jimmy A. Merritt, 63, of Spartanburg, husband of Molly Cooper Merritt, died Feb. 27, 2006 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Herbert A. an Nannie Mae Dillworth Merritt.

He was the owner of Merritt Grading and attended Clifton Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, two daughters, Wanda Wade of Easley and Saundra Finger of Rutherfordton, NC; two sons, Randy Merritt of Piedmont and Greg Merritt of Liberty; a step-daughter, Tami Alverson of Marietta; stepson, Jerry T. Cox of Marietta; three sisters, Betty M. White of Easley, Nancy M. Lynch and Mary M. Rouda, both of Greer; a brother, Jerry H. Merritt of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Mar. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


BILL MORRIS

William Campbell Morris, 80, of Anderson, died Feb. 27, 2006 at the Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Pendleton, he was a son of the late Paul Jones Morris and Annie Campbell Morris. 

He was retired from Duke Power and also worked for Pike Electric. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II and a member of Concord Baptist Church in Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Pressley Morris; and a sister, Sallye M. Teitler of Williamston.

Funeral services will be held Mar. 2 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment will follow in New Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.


DIXIE ANN DAVIS

Dixie Ann Ferguson Davis, 68, of Williamston, died Feb. 27, 2006.

Born in High Point, NC, a daughter of the late H.D. and Myrtle Yarber Ferguson. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband Jim L. Davis of the home; a son, James “Matt” Davis of Clemson; a daughter, Dianne Davis of Anderson; a sister, Brenda Sue Ferguson of Memphis, TN: and two grandsons.

No services are planned.

LOUISE GRIFFITH

Louise Watson Griffith, 91, formerly of Belton, widow of James Loranzie Griffith, died Feb. 27, 2006 at Summit Place Living Center in Simpsonville.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Jebb and Hattie Mae Vaughn Watson. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Jean Davis of Pelzer, Joyce Morgan of Belton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Mar. 2 at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
