PIEDMONT - It is with deep regret and sorrow that we, the family of Lloyd Holland (L. H.) Ouzts, Jr., announce his death on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home. Surrounded by his loving family and in the presence of God, he closed his eyes to the darkness of Alzheimers and woke up to the light of the glory of heaven. Lloyd, formerly of 116 Wigington Road, Piedmont, was born in Toccoa, GA, in April of 1921, the only son of the late Lloyd H. Ouzts, Sr. and Minnie Rhodes Ouzts. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Jean Holcombe Ouzts and their beloved daughter, Pamela Ouzts Sutherland and her husband, Charles. Lloyd was first married to the former Frances Elizabeth Wigington until her death in 1965. The children of that union are loving daughter, Brenda Ouzts Mull of Piedmont; and devoted son, Ray H. Ouzts and his wife, Lisa of Easley. He is also survived by a dear step-daughter, Nancy Watson Greene and her husband, Johnny, of Pickens; dearest sister, Mary Ouzts Ebey and her husband Steward, of Mauldin; a first cousin loved as a brother, George E. Ouzts of Tucson, AZ; and devoted friend and Army Brother Harry Cady and his wife, Pauline, of Red Hook, NY. His loving grandchildren include Kristy Mull Stone, Andrea Ouzts Johnson, Ricky and Ronnie Watson and Travis and Michael Greene. Great-grandchildren are Jim and Katrien Stone, Thomas, Landon, and Weston Johnson, Nathan, Sarah, Seth, and Sophie Watson, and Katie Greene. He was predeceased by a sister, Martha L. Bridges; and son-in-law, Donald Mull. Upon his graduation from Centerville High School in Elberton, GA, Lloyd joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on many projects in Oregon and Washington State. He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II and was a member of the 80th Division, Cannon Company, 319th Infantry. He served in the American Theater of Operations before being sent to the front lines. There he served in the European Theater under Gen. George Patton, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He participated in the Allied Invasion of Normandy, landing on Omaha Beach on D+2 and proceeded on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Lloyd received many medals for his bravery and outstanding service along with four bronze stars, and survived capture, a prison camp, and MIA status. He remained in the European Theater until his return to the U.S. and his discharge on December 27, 1945. Lloyd was retired from a career with J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant, and was also retired from a position as a security guard for Mayfair Mills. He was a member of the 80th Division Blue Ridge Veterans Association and traveled to many reunions with his Army brothers. Lloyds passion in life was watching something grow. He felt close to God in his yard filled with flowers, in his field filled with vegetables, or in his vineyard working with his scuppernongs. He claimed he could see the eye of God in a dewdrop on one of his flowers. Lloyd grew many prize winning vegetables and flowers, but his greatest pleasure was in giving them away. No words can express how much Pa will be missed by all those who loved him. He taught us by his example to always do the right thing, to have respect for ourselves and others and he taught us how to love by always putting his family first. The family wishes to thank the staff of Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home for the dedicated, loving care and respect given to our Dad since 2005 and all the other veterans in their care. We also wish to thank the staff of the Haven in the Village at Chanticleer for their loving kindness to our family during a two year stay. Our lives will forever be impacted and enriched by each and every resident and their families, whom we encountered on a daily basis while visiting in both facilities. The family received friends on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. A celebration of Lloyds life was held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Gray Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Frank Dill and the Rev. Barry Manley.
