Mary Margaret Owens Browning, 83, of Pelzer, widow of Lawrence Cleo Browning, died Feb. 28, 2006 at AnMed Health in Anderson. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Grover Henry and Nina Lee Lollis Owens. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Surviving are son, Tommy M. Harrison of Pelzer; sisters, Jennie Ruth Stevens of Pelzer and Vannie Lou Stone of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Mar. 3 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in the Williamston Cemetery. Mamie Nolen McAlister, 91, of Greenville Living Center, died Feb. 28, 2006. Born in Slabtown, TN, she was a daughter of the late Frank R. and Cora Stewart Nolen, and wife of the late Wesley Jefferson McAlister. She retired from Monaghan Mill. She was a member of Monaghan Methodist Church. Surviving are four sons, Robert McAlister of Sharon, Frank J. McAlister of Canton, GA, Dan McAlister of Fountain Inn, and Ray N. McAlister of Piedmont; a sister, Margie Smith of Dallas, NC; a brother, Edward Nolen of Mt. Holly, NC; 18 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 3 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery West. Martha G. Roper, 63, of Travelers Rest, died Feb. 23, 2006. Surviving are two children, Janet Roper Wilson of Piedmont and Carlos Wayne Roper of Greenville; four grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Bowen of Seneca. Private services are planned.
Arthur Jr. Red Anderson, of Greenville, died Feb. 25 in Greenville Memorial Hospital. Surviving are wife, Mary Lou Gray Anderson of the home; daughters, Sonia Louise Patterson of Toccoa, GA and Tammy Smith of the home; a son, Billy Glover of Piedmont; mother, Ellen Louise Sullivan Anderson of Greenville; brothers, Joseph Lee Anderson, Toy Lee, Ricky Anderson, all of Greenville, and L.T. Anderson of Simpsonville; sisters, Lee Alice Anderson and Pearl Anderson, both of Greenville; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 3 at Queen Street Baptist Church. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
Catherine Barnwell Austin, 82, formerly of Pelzer, widow of Joe B. Austin, died March 1, 2006 at Community Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Rubin and Loni Barnwell. She was a homemaker, a member of Pritchard Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC and a former member of Pelzer First Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Michael Austin of Dawsonville, GA and Douglas Austin of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Bertie Sue Gamel of Pelzer; and one granddaughter. Funeral services were held Mar. 4 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. Memorials may be made to the National Alzheimers Association, 225 N. Lloyd John Baum, 60, of Gray Court, husband of Sandra McConnell Baum, died Nov. 25, 2005. Born in Covington, TN, he was the son of Alcie Gay Baum and the late Lloyd John Baum Sr. He was a retired truck driver with Roadway. He was a member of Victory Chapel Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in Vietnam. Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Lois Brown of Easley; a son, Matt Baum of McCormick; two step-daughters, Michelle Ross of Piedmont and Juanita Trueblood of Easley; three brothers, Jimmy Baum of Germantown, TN, Elbert Baum of Henning, TN and Oscar Baum of Covington, TN; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Victory Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 251, Conestee, SC 29636. Memorial service was held Mar. 5 at Victory Chapel Baptist Church.
Anthony Andy DeWitt Morgan, 47, of Pelzer, died Mar. 3, 2006. He was a son of the late Glenn DeWitt and Helen Wood Morgan. He was formerly employed by Cushman Mill. He is survived by his daughter, Meagan Morgan of Piedmont; brothers, Dennis Morgan of Honea Path, Darrell Morgan of Pine Bluff, AR; and sister, Becky Turner of Pelzer. Ophelia Ann Hooper Chadwell, 62, of Belton, died March 4, 2006 at her home. Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Virgie Graveley Hooper. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, William Chadwell of Pelzer and Anthony Chadwell of Greenville; two daughters, Lorri Torres of Belton, Kim Chadwell of Greenville; three brothers, Gary Hooper, Jerry Hooper, both of Piedmont and Bobby Hooper of Greensboro, NC; and sister, Connie Kelly of Pelzer. Funeral services were held Mar. 7 at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Wilton Wilt Edward Jones, 89, husband of Nannie M. Jones, died March 5, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Dee Edward and Daisy Sue Woodward Jones. He was a WWII U.S. Air Force veteran, retired from J. P. Stevens White Horse Plant, former owner of Piedmont Produce and a member of Piedmont Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Nancy Brown of Piedmont; two brothers, Lee Jones and Joel Jones, both of Piedmont; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 8 at Piedmont Heights Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Larry Furman Hardy, 71, husband of Helen Broome Hardy of Williamston, died Mar. 4, 2006 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Furman Warren Hardy and Ruby Dillard Hardy Freeman. He was an Army veteran and retired from J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Wendy Rogers of Honea Path; son, Michael Dale Cooley of Waterloo; brother, W.R. Bill Hardy of Seneca and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 7 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
William Clarence Reid, 86, of Piedmont, widower of Zelpha Hughey Reid, died Mar. 4, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville County, he was son of the late William Franklin and Melvia Cooley Reid. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, formerly employed by Mills Mill, and a member of Trinity Baptist Tabernacle. Surviving are sons, Ted and Phil Reid; daughters, Susan Connelly and Sandra Young; ten grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 7 at Trinity Baptist Tabernacle. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Carlton D. Stewart, 84, of Greenville and husband of the late Camilla H. Stewart, died Sunday, March 5, 2006. Born on October 15, 1921 in Ninety-Six, SC, he was the son of the late Elmer M. and Sally P. Stewart. As a veteran, he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was a Mason. He was employed as a professional engineer in the textile industry. He was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death was a sister, Doris Chadean Carnell. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Stewart Davis and her husband, Bobby of Jonesboro, GA; three step-children, Henry Parks of Baltimore, MD; Oatis and Camilla Parks both of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; six grandchildren, Jason McNeill, Bobbi Leah Davis, Taylor Stewart, Seth Parks, Jessica Parks and Tammy Parks. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Cameron Treece officiating. The family received friends Tuesday afternoon from 2 until 3 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary. Ollie Mae Day McKinney, 92, widow of the late Paul Eugene McKinney, died March 7, 2006 at the Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Steve Frank and Lela Clark Day. She was a member of Cannon Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn M. Duncan of Pickens and Barbara M. Duncan of Piedmont; two sons, Curtis McKinney and Bobby McKinney of Pickens a sister, Avaleen Grand of Pickens; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Mar. 9 at Cannon Mountain Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Griffin Baptist Church Cemetery.
Virginia Ann Ginger McIntyre Ashmore, 55, wife of Charles Ashmore, of Simpsonville, died March 7, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She was born in Greenville to Charles M. McIntyre and Roberta Elizabeth Spencer McIntyre. She worked for S&S Cafeteria and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Surviving, in addition to her husband of the home and her parents of Marietta, are a son, Russell Anderson of Wilmington, NC; a stepdaughter, Emily Trent of Pelzer; two brothers, Paul Spencer McIntyre of Marietta, and Mike McIntyre of Greenville; a sister, Dani Hale of Greenville; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Mar. 9 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Clarence Locklear, 74, widower of Azlee Sprouse Locklear of Greer, died Mar. 3, 2006 at Piedmont Nursing and Rehab Center. Born in Laurens County, he was the son of the late Alzno C. and Mary Clemons Locklear. He was of the Baptist faith and was a farmer. Surviving are his brother, David Locklear of N.C.; sisters, Betty Smith of Williamston, and Helen Bridges of Belton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held Mar. 4 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
John Marshall McAlister, 72, of Johnson City, TN, died Feb. 25, 2006 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Anderson and a son of the late Roy Dewey and Mary Elva Junkins McAlister. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary McAlister. He was employed by Mahoneys and was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Surviving are daughters, Kay Earlene Yancey Bates of Nashville, TN, Marie Mitchell of Johnson City, TN, and Marsha Jean Hawk of Elizabethton, TN; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Una Hoff of Pennsylvania, Myra Markham of Florida, Dorcas Allen of Missouri and Ariel Lee Smith of Piedmont; and brothers, Charles M. McAlister of Leesville, TN, M.A. McAlister of Anderson and Roy Dewey McAlister of Asheville, NC.
Robert Elwood Davis, 67, husband of Charlotte Epps Davis of Belton, died Mar. 4, 2006 at his home. Born in Greenville County he was the son of the late Rev. Thomas Elwood and Mary Davis and John and Valeria Tatum Huff. He was a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church and a U.S. Marine veteran. He retired from Michelin and was former Field Supervisor for Southside Ball Park. He was the Football Director for South Greenville Youth Association. Surviving in addition to his wife are; sons, Thomas Burgess Sr. of Pelzer, Robin Davis of Easley, John T. Davis Sr. of Possum Kingdom, Travis Davis of Easley; brothers, Tony C. Davis Sr. of Beaumont, TX, John Huff Jr. of Kernersville, NC; sisters, Betty Taylor, Sib Groce and Sue Macy, all of Kernersville, NC; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 7 at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Garden.
Donald Alvin Bowlin, 68, of Simpsonville, husband of Mary Matteson Bowlin, died Mar. 3, 2006 at his home. Born in Kingsport, TN, he was the son of the late James Roscoe Bowlin and Annie Elizabeth Kneffel Deason. He was retired from Michelin Tire Co. and attended Simpsonville Church of God. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean conflict. Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Sharon Lee of Simpsonville, Cindy Forestiera of Milton, DE; three step-daughters, Cecelia Hipps of Pelzer, Nan Huskamp and Gina Ginn, both of Simpsonville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. N. Ray Greene, 75, of Greenville, died Mar. 4, 2006. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Jay and Ida Mae Greene. He was a retired builder and he was a member of Simpsonville United Methodist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Judi Sherbert of Gray Court, Dianne Brown of Pelzer and Sherri Henrikson of Charleston; two sons, Dan Greene of Greenville and Stephen Jay Greene of Greenville; one brother, L.S. Green of Mauldin; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 6 at Thomas McAfee, Downtown Chapel.
Sammie Ernest Smith, 61, husband of Beverly Diane Smith, of Belton, died Mar. 3, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of Lucille McAlister Smith and the late Enrest Smith. He was a member of Triangle Baptist Church and a retired painter. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran. Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are, daughters, Crystal Smith of Belton and Tammy Smith of Williamston; sons, Thomas Shane Smith of Williamston, Sammie Chad Smith and Brian Lee Smith, both of Belton; and eight grandchildren. Graveside services were held Mar. 5 at Garden of Memories. Memorials may be made to Triangle Baptist Church.
Bertha Estelle Johnson, 81, of Easley, died March 5, 2006 at National Health Care Center. Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Willie C. and Ruth Uldrick Cothran. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and was retired from textiles. Surviving are daughter, Renna Robertson of Piedmont; son, William Johnson of Anderson; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mar. 8 at Cox Funeral Home chapel in Belton. Burial followed in Cedar Shoals Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice. |
