ROBERT FRANKLIN MCCRACKEN, SR.

Robert Franklin “Buddy” McCracken, Sr., 63, of Conway, died Feb. 26, 2008 at the Medical University of South Carolina.

He was born in Sylacaga, Alabama, a son of the late Robert Brittie and Eula Beatrice Glenn McCracken. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Conway.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen McCracken of Conway; five children, Robby McCracken of Piedmont, Mindy Smith of Simpsonville, Martha Ann McCracken of Charleston, Celia Timmerman of Ware Shoals and T.J. Spivey of North Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Cope-Fersner of Orangeburg and Marjorie Layfield of Dadeville, AL.

Memorial services were held Feb. 29 at First United Methodist Church.

Mary Rosemond, 65, of Greenville, died Feb. 24, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Walter, Sr. and Mabel Smith Gambrell.

Surviving are her husband, Samuel Rosemond; daughters, Rene Harper of Georgia, Arnetta Dawson of Pelzer, Barbara Dawson and Francine Gambrell, both of Greenville and Agatha Dawson of Pelzer; sons, Warren Gambrell of Piedmont, Samuel and Emmanuel Rosemond of Pelzer; sisters, Gail Bowens of Toledo, Ohio, Sylvia Martin of Greenville, Sharon Gambrell of Williamston, Gwendolyn Gambrell of Pelzer and Jennifer Gambrell of Greenville; brothers, David Gambrell of Greenville, Johnny Gambrell of Pelzer, Eric Gambrell of Anderson, Jacob Gambrell of Greenville and Tony Gambrell of Pelzer; and ten grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Feb. 29 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


JANET CATHERINE BIRKNER

Janet Catherine Birkner, 66, wife of John Birkner of Anderson, died Feb. 26, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in South Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Gustave and Kathrina Rudolph Mizejewski.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Barbara White of Williamston; two granddaughters; and sister, Karen Vatuccio of Pittsburg, PA.

Memorial services were held Mar. 2 at Bible Baptist Church of Anderson.

HAZEL WILLIAMS ELLISON

Hazel Lillie Williams Ellison, 85, of Anderson, wife of Dr. Carl Grayson Ellison, died Feb. 28, 2008 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Williamston, she was the daughter of the late Vaudry Johnson and Onie Josephine Hicks Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Carl G. Ellison of the home; one son, Richard Keith Ellison of Pelzer; one daughter, Dianne Ellison Martin of Olive Branch, MS; one sister, Maude Moore of Honea Path; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mar. 1 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Belton. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

MOSES E. DAVIS

Moses E. Davis, 75, of Newry, died February 28, 2008 at his home. 

He was the son of the late Henley and Delia Carver Davis. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Long.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by daughters, Belinda Pelfrey of Westminster and Teresa McElroy of Columbia; sons, Ernest, Richard and Eddie Davis all of Walhalla; sisters, Evelyn Hunnicutt of Walhalla, Pat Nicholson and Geneva Moore of Westminster and Frances Hightower of Seneca; brothers, Winfred Davis of Pelzer, Leon Davis of Walhalla, LeRoy Davis of Pelzer; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held March 2 at Neville Cemetery in Walhalla with military honors.


WILLIAM ‘BUD’ METCALF

William “Bud” Metcalf, 71, of Dallas, NC died March 2, 2008.

Born in Williamston, he was the son of the late Joseph and Cora Cannon Metcalf. He was a retired dock worker for Carolina Freight and also served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by wife, Linda Robinson Metcalf of the home; daughters Robin Rohm of Forest City, NC; Kim Cabe of Gastonia, NC; sisters, Hilda LeCroy of Williamston, Bobbie Self Caldwell of Lincolnton, NC; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 5 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

RUBY TRAMMELL

Ruby McAlister Trammell, 75, of Easley, died Feb. 29, 2008 at the Hospice House in Anderson. 

Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Estelle Smith McAlister.

She retired from St. Francis Hospital and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, John, J.T. Trammell of the home; two daughters, Amanda Yeomans of Powdersville and Belinda Nalley of Pickens; a brother, Harold McAlister of Easley; four stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 2 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.


MAUDELINE BRADLEY

Maudeline Eison Bradley, formerly of Greenville, died Feb. 27, 2008 at her home at Windsor Point in Fuquay-Varina, NC.

Born in Pelzer, she was predeceased by her parents, Frederick Eison and Nannie Dowis Eison.

She was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church in Apex.

She was the managing partner of Southern Barber and Beauty Supply of Greenville for many years.

She is survived by her husband, James W. Bradley; daughters, Jo Ellen Stewart and Ginny Isbell; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 2 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.

RALPH STEELE BLACK

Ralph Steele Black, 72, of Piedmont, died March 1, 2008 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Thomas Black, Jr. and Eunice Hopkins Black. He was a former supervisor with Carolina Plating and was a member of Piedmont Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Tucker Black; daughter, Angel Black Stinnett of Anderson; two sons, Bill Black of the home and Ralph E. Black of Piedmont; two granddaughters that live in the home, Casey and Tamia Black; eight additional grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Roy Black of Anderson, Jimmy Black of Piedmont, Johnny Black of Greer and Charles Black of Williamston.

Funeral service were held March 4 in the Downtown Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


CYNTHIA KOENIG

Cynthia Rae Koenig, 30, of Piedmont, died March 3, 2008 at her home.

Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, she was a daughter of James and Lucinda Berryhill.

Surviving in addition to her parents of Easley are two daughters, Hope Marie Raby and Destiney Rose Kay; a son, Justin Kay; a sister, Sandra Lee Bettis; a brother, James Martin Berryhill; grandparents, Rose Marie Louderback and Myra and James Berryhill.

Services will be 2 p.m. March 7 at United Wesleyan Church.


NELL GORDON BOTTS FLEMING

Nell Gordon Botts Fleming, 92, of Abbeville, died March 2, 2008 at the Maples of Honea Path.

She was born in Abbeville County to the late William S. and Janie Blackmon Gordon. She was a lifelong member of the Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church.

She was twice married, first to the late Raymond Earl Botts and then to the late J.L. Fleming.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Swann of Pelzer; three stepsons; four step-daughters; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 5 at Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church. Committal service followed in Long Cane Cemetery.

HAROLD PHILLIPS

Thomas Harold Phillips, 65, husband of Dorothy Jane Tice Phillips, of Williamston, died March 2, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of Helen Inez Campbell Phillips of Piedmont and the late R.L. Phillips. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy, retired from Nutra Manufacturing and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by step-children, Tonya Taylor, Mark Garrett, both of Belton, Shannon Garrett of Pelzer; adopted son, Nicky Phillips of TN; sisters, Linda Trotter, Sandra Kelly, Kay Barwick, all of Piedmont; brother, Eddie Phillips of Pelzer; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mar. 5 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer. A graveside committal service followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.

ELISE WATERS

Mattie Elise Kelly Watson Waters, 82, formerly of Pelzer, died March 3, 2008 at Brookside Living Center in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Arthur and Iler Odell Scott Kelly. She was twice married, first to the late Marion C. “Kinky” Watson, then to the late Walter Lee Waters. She retired from Essex, Inc. and was a member of Eastview Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Iler Jane Watson Golden of Pelzer; brother, Fred Kelly of McCormick; sister, Phyllis Odell Kelly Williams of Greenville; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 5 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.


BENNIE HOOD

Bennie Hood, 66, of Piedmont died Feb. 24, 2008 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Prelo and Annie Young Hood.

Surviving are his wife, Queen Johnson Hood; daughter, Avis Thomas of Berea; son, Dr. Fred Kennard Hood of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Bobbie Wright, Betty Fletcher and Christine Stewart, all of Piedmont; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Mar. 1 at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
