JAMES F. KARLS

James F. Karls, 59, of Antreville Community, husband of Pat Karls, died Feb. 28, 2007. He was born in Madison, WI to Virginia Deans Karls and the late Alois Francis Karls. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abbeville.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Joe Karls.

Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Jesse Karls of Abbeville and Chad Karls of Williamston; step-mother, Marjorie Karls of Dane, WI; two sisters, Karon Caudell of Anderson and Virginia Franklin of Illinois; six step-brothers, Rick Karls, Randy Karls, Thomas Farr of Greybill, WY, Robert Farr of Casper, NJ, Jack Karls of Omaha, NE and Bill Karls of Chetek, WI; five step-sisters, Betty Weldom of Marshall, WI, Sandra Cook of Dane, WI, Barbara Lundsford of Marshall, WI, Mary Lou Hyatt of Dells, WI and Susan Frankland of Dane, WI; and three grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.


HERMAN EVATT

BELTON, SC - Herman Eugene Evatt, 63, husband of Ann Allen Evatt, of 1948 Holliday Dam Road, died Monday, March 5, 2007 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Henry and Lillie Mae Seigler Evatt. He was a U.S. Army veteran, employed by Shriners Children’s Hospital, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Pelzer.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Ann Evatt of Belton; daughter, Melissa Evatt of Belton; brothers, Robert Evatt of Belton, Jerry Evatt of Gulf Breeze, FL, Sam Evatt of Spartanburg, Kenneth Evatt, Ronnie Evatt, both of Belton; and grandchildren, Casey Evatt and Chad Evatt.

He was predeceased by a brother, Marvin Evatt.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Mar. 9 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the Rev. Perry Evatt officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home and received friends Mar. 8 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

REBECCA LEE

Rebecca Lee of Pendleton, died March 8, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate.

She was the widow of Willie Lee and the daughter of the late Fyead Galloway and the late Flora Hunter Galloway. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was a custodial worker.

She is survived by six daughters, Betty Hardy of Boston, MA, Rev. Jannie Acker, Mamie Norwood, Elizabeth Holland of Pendleton, Tecora Johnson of Anderson and Martha Gleaton of Greenville; five sons, Henry Lee of Piedmont, Isaiah, James, Thomas and Charles Lee, all of Pendleton; 39 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Florence M. Riley of Fairfax.

Funeral services were held Mar. 12 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Pendleton. Burial followed in Webb Cemetery in Pendleton.


TROY ‘CABBAGE’ ROSS

Troy “Cabbage” Robert Ross, 62, of Fair Play, died March 10, 2007 at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of Clovis Ross of Pelzer and the late Pelham L. Ross, Sr.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a welder by trade.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Juanita Gilliam Ross of the home; daughters, Fay Webb of Pelzer, Rene King and Michele King, both of Seneca; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 12, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial followed in Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.

AUSTIN SIMMONS

Austin Shane Simmons, 10, of West Pelzer, died March 8, 2007 at Hospice House.

He was the son of Michael Shane Simmons and step-mother, Ashley Simmons of Belton, and Sabrina Owens of Pickens.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Donald and Tammy Simmons of Pelzer, Ronnie Owens, Lee and Nancy Evatt; and sister, Bailey Simmons.

Graveside services were held March 10 at White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.


CHARLIE THAXTON MAWYER

Charlie Thaxton Mawyer, 62, of Greenville, died March 9, 2007.

Born in Nelson County, VA, he was the husband of Mae Dean Hastings Mawyer and the son of the late Harry William Mawyer and Amy Beatrice Kidd Trice. He was the owner and operator of Mile-A-Minute.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Mawyer of Piedmont and a sister, Barbara Moyers of Virginia.

A memorial service was held March 12 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.

ELSIE CASE WATSON

Elsie Case Watson, 96, widow of Eugene H. Watson, died March 9, 2007 at National Health Care in Greer.

Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Thurman T. and Eva Reid Case.

She was retired from Halfacre and Osbourne and was a member of Piedmont Park United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Ned Watson of Bonneau and Richard Watson of Piedmont; a sister, Lenora Cathy of Six Mile; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be made to Piedmont Park United Methodist Church Fellowship Class, 1100 Piedmont Park Road, Taylors, SC 29687.

Funeral services were held March 12 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.


STEVE EVANS

Stephen “Steve” Will Evans, 47, husband of Lynda Jernigan Evans, died March 9, 2007.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of Elbert J. and Cora Belle Williams Evans of Pelzer and an electrician with Davis Electric Company.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Katelin Evans of Pelzer; step-children, Michael Lord of Tampa, FL, Jennifer Jernigan of Pelzer; sister, Jo Ann Lark of Pelzer; brothers, Bobby J. Evans, Thomas E. Evans, both of Pelzer; and one step-granddaughter.

Graveside services were held March 12 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


BETTY M. SULLIVAN

Betty Jean Moore Sullivan, 72, of Fountain Inn, died March 9, 2007 at her home.

Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Joey Mae Segars Moore. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Jo Ann Patrick of Vernon, AZ, Linda Beasley of Fountain Inn, Darlene Sullivan of Simpsonville; son, Larry Edward Sullivan of Pelzer; sister, Doris Culbertson of Williamston; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held March 13 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

RAYMOND J. ANDERSON, JR.

Raymond J. Anderson, Jr., 63, of Greenville, died March 7, 2007 at his home.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond Joseph Anderson Sr. and Effie Pruitt Anderson.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Anderson; daughter, Ramonda Shumpert of Mauldin and Jacqueline Leveston of Piedmont; sons, Ronald Anderson of Simpsonville, Ricky Anderson of Taylors and Derrick Anderson of Greenville; sister, Betty J. Fulton of Philadelphia, PA; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 10 at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


LEONARD HURSHEL GRANT

Leonard Hurshel Grant, 76, of Fountain Inn, died March 8, 2007 at Allen Bennett Hospital in Greer.

He was born in Greenville to the late James Grant and the late Kate Waldrop Grant.  

He was a retired staff sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was also retired from Fiber Industries, Wunder Weave Carpet Company. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Tommie Frawley Grant; stepson, Darwin A. Lewis, Jr. of Townville; brother, Pat Grant of Williamston; sister, Lois Edens of West Pelzer; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held March 10 at Cannon Funeral Home Chapel, Fountain Inn. Burial followed with military honors at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

RETA OAKS

Reta Bertha Doran Oaks, 81, widow of Carl Lynn Oaks, of Pelzer, died March 11, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in East Freetown, NY, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Cecil Blowers Doran. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara J. Hastings of Jacksonville, FL, Reta K. “Kathy” Blasdale of Piedmont, Paulette L. Horne of Pelzer, Patricia L. Dexter of Guangzhou, China; son, Carl L. Oaks Jr. of Knoxville, TN; sisters, JoAnn Doran, Sandra Emerson, both of Georgia, Susie Inman of Cortland, NY; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 14 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Virgil, NY.

CARL D. STEGALL

Carl Dayton Stegall, 80, husband of Grace Griffith Stegall of Anderson, died March 12, 2007 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Hovie E. Stegall and Sudie Kay Stegall. He retired from McDuffie High School as Athletic Director. He was co-founder of the South Carolina State Basketball Coaches Association.

He was a U.S. Korean War veteran and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Griffith Stegall of the home; daughters, Angela S. Alexander and Anna S. Taylor, both of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Paul Stegall of Greenville, Clarence Stegall of Piedmont and Joe Stegall of Easley; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held March 15 at 4 p.m in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

ALICE JANE SIMMONS

Alice Jane Simmons, 53, of Piedmont, died March 11, 2007 at her home.

Surviving are her husband, Garnett Lee Simmons, Jr.; two sons, John Allen Ramey and Nick Simmons, both of Greenville; four grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Jones of Piedmont and Rita Riopelle of Easley; five brothers, Steve Ramey of Fountain Inn, John R. Ramey of Greenville, Allen Ray Ramey of Greenville, Gary Ramey of Geenville and Leroy Ramey of Easley.

A memorial service was held March 14 at Carpenters Tabernacle Church, 15 Crane Ave., Greenville.


TROY COKER, SR.

Troy Lee Coker, Sr., 73, widower of Donna Vee Heller Coker, died March 11, 2007 at Southern Oaks Assisted Living.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Ernest Bryan and Marie Davis Coker. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from the Greenville County Tax Collector’s Office and was a member of First Baptist Church in Taylors.

Surviving are son, Troy Lee Coker, Jr., of Greenville; brothers, Edward Coker of Greenville, Benny Coker of Atlanta, GA; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. March 15 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon - 2 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at Gray Mortuary.


B.W. WOFFORD

Broadus William Wofford, 75, died March 12, 2007.

Born in Woodruff, he was a son of the late Toy Lathan Wofford and Laura Godfrey Wofford and stepmother, Martha Roberts Wofford.

He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth James Wofford of the home; a daughter, Vicki Johnson of Piedmont; a son, Brad Wofford of Conway; sister, Frances Weems of Greenville; three brothers, Toy Wofford Jr. of Idaho, Tommy Wofford of Fountain Inn and Terry Wofford of Piedmont; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. at Washington Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, West.

WILLIAM THOMAS HESTER

Tommy Hester, 66, husband of Lynda Pace Hester, died March 12, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Rev. William Roy and Cora Miller Hester. He was president of Orchard View Meats and was a member of Marietta First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; sons, Todd Hester of Taylors, Rhys Hester of Summerville; daughter, Susan Bocook of Summerville; brother, Wayne Hester of Travelers Rest; sisters, Martha Looper of Marietta, Janice Samuels of Piedmont; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Mar. 15 at Marietta First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Coleman Memorial Cemetery.

FRANCES McGAHA

Frances Jane Seawright McGaha, 73, of Donalds, wife of Homer McGaha died March 12, 2007 at AnMed Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late George G. and Bessie Ferguson Seawright, Sr.

She retired from Abbeville Shirt Plant and was a member of Little Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; three sons, Daniel McGaha of Honea Path, Johnny McGaha of Belton and Shaun McGaha of the home; four daughters, Jane McGaha of Honea Path, Patti McGaha of the home, Tammy Willis of Greenwood and Michelle Thomas of Williamston; one sister, Juanita Clamp of Donalds; one brother, George Seawright, Jr. of Antreville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held March 15 at 11 a.m. at Little Mountain Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
