Rayfus Howard, Jr., 68, of Williamston, died Mar. 17, 2007 at the Westside Living Center in Greenville. He was a native of Anderson County. Surviving are his wife, Patsy Marie Owens Howard of the home; three daughters, Lynetia A. Howard of the home, Gail Howard of Williamston and Carol B. Howard of Pelzer; two sons, Julian Dwight Howard of Greenville and Michael Spencer Howard of Pelzer; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Mar. 22 at 3 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church, Williamston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Daisy Evangeline Sewell Mims, of Piedmont, died Mar. 18, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband, Reverend Harold O. Mims, Sr. She was a retired teacher from Greenville County School District and a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. Surviving are her son, Harold O. Mims, Jr.; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Mar. 22, 2007 at 1 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church. Charles Glenn Birddog Davis, Sr., 78, husband of Hazel Pauline Calhoun Davis, died Mar. 20, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Caroline, NC, he was the son of the late Clemons and Ila Smith Davis. He retired from J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant and was a member of The Carpenters House. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Surviving in addition to his wife are; four daughters, Diane Whitmire of Taylors, Kathy Sonefelt of Houston, TX, Brenda Brown of Simpsonville and Maryann Richards of Fountain Inn; two sons, Charles Pete Davis and Michael Davis, both of Piedmont; two sisters, Betty Wilkie and Shirley Ledford, both of Cliffside, NC; a brother, Paul Davis of San Francisco, CA; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Mar. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at The Carpenters House, River Road, Piedmont. Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
Oct. 18, 1932 - March 21, 2007 WILLIAMSTON - Elizabeth Betty Burns Roberson, 74, wife of Joe Edwin Roberson, of 19 Edgewood Drive, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Roy L. and Flora Newton Burns. She worked in banking for 44 years and retired from Anderson National Bank. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston where she served as organist for 57 years and was a member of Prayer Group #3 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. Betty and Joe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2006. In addition to her husband, she is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Cherie Roberson of the Cheddar Community; brother, Edward Lee Buddy Burns of Williamston; and grandchildren, Brett Roberson and Hayden Roberson. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. March 23 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family is at the home and received friends 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. March 22 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. PELZER - Myrtle Jean Jeanie Milton, 53, of 104 Roger Drive, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Simpsonville, she was a daughter of Agatha Sue Owens Dickerson and the late Elton Aubrey Milton, Sr. She was a former employee of Growth Enterprise in Georgetown, SC, where she was former President of Club Self Help. She was also employed by the Anderson County Disability Workshop and an advocate for people with mental disabilities. Jeanie was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was active in the Homemakers Sunday School Class and the Joymaker Senior Club. She was a very loving person who was dedicated to her God, her family, her friends, and her country. In addition to her mother of the home, she is survived by sister, Shirley Milton Warren of the home; brother and sister-in-law, David Vernon and Debra Gilstrap Milton of Travelers Rest; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her step-father, David Horace Dickerson; and a brother, Elton Aubrey Milton, Jr. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. March 24 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with the Rev. Walter Truman Seawright, 74, of Pelzer, husband of Betty Durham Seawright, died Mar. 20, 2007 at the Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Robert Newton Seawright and Grace Shirley Seawright. He was retired from the United States Navy and was of the Christian Faith. Surviving are his wife, Betty Durham Seawright of the home; daughters, Sandy Farrow of Johnson City, TN, Rosie Cannon of Sanford, FL and Janet Mead of Beltmont, NC; sisters, Ollie Ruth Henderson of Greer and Sarah Davis of Easley; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Vivian Jean Alewine Smith, 57, wife of Harold Smith, of Williamston, died Mar. 21, 2007 at Regency Hospital in Greenville. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Felton Berry and Ruth Waters Alewine. She was a homemaker. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Wendy Smith Bronson of Pelzer; sisters, Janie Hammett of Greer, Shirley Vinson of Prattville, AL, Margie Williams of Williamston, Linda Owens of Crystal River, FL; brother, Ray Alewine of Williamston; and two grandchildren. Mary Eula Holcombe Hudson, 77, of Pelzer, widow of Henry Lawrence Hudson, died Mar. 22, 2007 at Riverside Living Center in Piedmont. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Parley Oscar and Mary Hester Finley Holcombe. She was retired from Cushman Mill and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Clara Gilreath of Pelzer; three sons, John Hudson of Pelzer, Larry Hudson of Belton, Billy Ray Hudson of Williamston; six sisters, Vederebell Jamison, Jewell Durham, Elizabeth Gibson, Erlene Roper, Beatrice Gantt, Bertha Patterson; four brothers, James, Jay, Roy, Johnny, Herman Holcombe; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Lucy Owen Bowen, 93, of Williamston, widow of Frank R. Bowen, died March 22, 2007. She was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. Sallie Elizabeth Alexander Mahaffey, 79, of Pelzer, widow of Eustace Ethel Mahaffey, died March 22, 2007 at Riverside Living Center in Piedmont. Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late George Washington and Celie McGinnis Alexander. She retired from Stone Manufacturing and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are step-sons, Earl Mahaffey of Greenville, Benny Mahaffey of Woodruff; step-daughter, Brenda Hammonds of Pelzer; sister, Georgia Shiflett of Anderson; brothers, Johnny Alexander of West Pelzer, Fred Alexander of Pelzer; and seven stepgrandchildren. Donnie R. Owens, 58, husband of Priscilla Cooper Owens, of Piedmont, died Mar. 21, 2007 at his home. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Velma Bridges Owens and Buren Hiott Owens. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, employed with Michelin and was a member of Arial Baptist Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Melony Lee Blackstock of Piedmont; son, Brian Ray Owens of Fountain Inn; sister, Zelda Ellenburg of Easley; brother, Rudy Owens of Easley; and two grandsons. Donald O. Chamberlain Sr., 82, of Piedmont, husband of Barbara Taylor Chamberlain, died Mar. 22, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital, Downtown. Born in Biddeford, ME, he was the son of the late Walter and Laura Noel Chamberlain. He was retired from Saco Lowell and was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. He served during World War II in the 8th and 9th United States Army Air Forces and the United States Air Task Base Air Depot #1. Surviving in addition to his wife, are four sons, Dennis Chamberlain of Greenville, James Chamberlain of Madison, AL, Don Chamberlain Jr. of Scarborough, MA and Christopher Chamberlain of Greenville; two daughters, Joyce Andrus of Warner Robins, GA and Donna Longe of Glen Falls, NY; a sister, Julie Ann Bell of Wildwood Crest, NJ; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Martha Mildred Lark Fletcher, 82, of Pelzer, widow of James Arthur J.A. Fletcher, died Mar. 25, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Henry Nesbitt and Hattie Pruitt Lark. She was retired from Union Carbide and a Baptist. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Claybrook of Wichita Falls, TX; sister, Inez Lark Heflin of Belton; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. Willie Clinkscales Jr., 74, of Williamston, died Mar. 22, 2007 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. He was the son of the late Willie Clinkscales Sr. and Etta Hardy Clinkscales. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Jean Clinkscales of the home; four daughters, Betty Louise Richardson of Williamston, Shirley Jean Blanding of Greenville, Marilyn Darnel Clinkscales of the home and Geneva Davis of Anderson; one son, Michael Clinkscales of Anderson; four sisters, Rozella Dean, Fannie Scott, Inez Nance, Sarah Crosby, all of Anderson; one brother, Perry Clinkscales of Anderson; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Margurite Ideline Lyles Cobb, 88, of Greenville, died Mar. 24, 2007. Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late W.R. and Wilma Lucille Brown Lyles. She was retired from J.M. Fields and was a member of Paris Church of God. She is survived by two sisters, Dotsy Lollis of Piedmont and Thelma Burns of Laurens; and a brother, Elbert Lyles of Spartanburg. Clyde E. Murphy, 77, of the Piercetown Community, died Mar. 13, 2007. Born in Belton, he was a son of the late James E. and Mamie Sue Acker Murphy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Marlboro County Schools as an Administrator. He was a member of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church. Austin Shane Simmons, 10, of West Pelzer, died March 8, 2007 at Hospice House. He was the son of Michael Shane Simmons and step-mother, Ashley Simmons of Belton, and Sabrina Neibel of Pickens. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Donald and Tammy Simmons of Pelzer, Ronnie Owens, Lee and Nancy Evatt; sister, Bailey Simmons; and great-grandfather, Carl Looper. Ruby Ella Chappell Breedlove, 89, of Pelzer, wife of the late Gordon Eli Breedlove Sr., died Mar. 25, 2007 at Palmetto Health Baptist, Easley. Born in North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Anderson and Emily Josephine Smith Chappell. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, Oder L. Breedlove, Gordon E. Breedlove, Jr., Clyde A. Breedlove, all of Pickens, Guy Breedlove of Greenville; two daughters, Sadie McCroskey of Pelzer and Mary Elizabeth Barker of Six Mile; sister, Norma Thomas of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Matthew Matt Clifton Haines, 42, of Easley, died Mar. 24, 2007. Born in Canton, OH, he was a son of Herbert and Peggy Buchanan of Piedmont. He was a warehouse manager at Palmetto Custom Films in Piedmont and was a U.S. Navy veteran of Desert Storm serving in the Persian Gulf. He was a member of Marathon Community Church. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Sherry Metz Haines of the home; a son, Christopher Crouchman of the home; five daughters, Nicole Coggins of Liberty, Rochelle Crouchman, Anna Haines, Mattie Haines and Jamie Crouchman, all of Easley; three sons, Michael Haines of Greenville, Dr. Dale Buchanan of Charlotte, NC, and Geary Parsons of Colorado; three sisters, Pam Young of Piedmont, Cheryl Gaines of Easley and Sharon Parsons of Georgia; and two grandchildren. Annie Ruth Hicks Hammonds Vaughn, 76, widow of Joe Alexander Vaughn, of Williamston, died Mar. 26, 2007 at North Greenville Hospital. Born in Greer, she was a daughter of the late Gainow Lee and Nellie Florene Hammond Hicks. She was twice married, first to the late William Oscar Hammonds, retired from West Point Stevens and a member of Bethel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. Surviving are sons, Billy Joe Hammonds, Sr. of Williamston, Haskell Hammonds of Pelzer; sister, Edith Gentry of Pelzer; brothers, Jerry Hicks of Williamston, Eddie Hicks of Liberty; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Mar. 29 at Bethel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
December 29, 1920 - March 27, 2007 PIEDMONT - Clay Chastain, 86, of Piedmont, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Magnolia Manor of Greenville. Born in Hall County, GA, he was a son of the late Carl and Minnie Stowers Chastain. He retired from the Platt Saco Lowell Corporation in 1983 and was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Powdersville. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II for two and one half years. He served as Squad Leader in the Third Combat Infantry Division, was in five major campaigns and two invasions. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart with Cluster, three Presidential Citations, Good Conduct Medal, and Bronze Star. He also assisted the French First Army and was awarded the French Fourragere. Survivors are son and daughter-in-law, Don and Debbie Chastain; grandchildren, Kevin Chastain and Darla C. Bryant; sister-in-law, Bernice Chastain; brother-in-law, James Timms; nephew, James Chastain; niece, Dot Oliver; and great-grandchildren, Savannah Chastain, Brooks Beacham, Cole and Keri Bryant, all of Piedmont. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Timms Chastain and brother, Hoyt Chastain. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family is at the sons residence in Piedmont, and received friends Mar. 28 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
