EDNA MARIE CAMPBELL-SPANN

Edna Marie Campbell-Spann, wife of John Wesley Spann, Jr., died Mar. 25, 2007.

Born in Abbeville to the late Willie Campbell, Sr. and Minnie Lee Hunter Campbell, she was formerly employed with Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of I-85 Church of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Minnie Lee Campbell of Abbeville; sisters, Emma Wardlaw and Mary Johnson of Abbeville and Rosa Eichelberger of Mauldin; brothers, Lawrence Campbell, Sr. of Greenwood, Perry Campbell of Greenville, James Campbell of Easley, Arthur Campbell of Piedmont, Foster Campbell of Martinez, GA, Willie Campbell, Jr., Freddie Campbell and Curtis Campbell, both of Abbeville.

Funeral service was held Mar. 30 at I-85 Church of Christ. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


JOAN SWEENEY TODD

Joan Sweeney Todd, 55, of Piedmont, died Mar. 25, 2007 in Clinton.

Surviving are daughters, Ericka Channell of Greenville, Jocelyn Sweeney and Lavonda Sweeney, both of Piedmont and Jalonda Sweeney of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Janice Merritt of Greenville and Sharon Chappell of Greer; brothers, William Charles Makins and J.D. Spears, both of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mar. 30 at Nicholtown Missionary Baptist Church. A private burial followed.


ALLEN MITCHELL

John Allen Mitchell, 25, of Pelzer, died Mar. 27, 2007. Born in Anderson, he was the son of John Lee and Connie Hansen Mitchell. He was employed by Southeastern Paper Board.

In addition to his parents of the home, he is survived by sisters, Shelly Center of Piedmont and Leigh Ann Mitchell of Pelzer.

Funeral services were held Mar. 31 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer.


ANITA BROOKS

Anita Lynn Williams Brooks, 43, of Piedmont, died Mar. 21, 2007.

Born in Cape Charles, VA, she was a daughter of Linda Gail Kelly Williams and the late David Robert “Bobby” Williams. She was a former nursing assistant.

In addition to her mother of Piedmont, she is survived by daughter, Nikki Brooks of the home; and a sister, Lisa Dianne Williams of Piedmont.

No services are planned at this time.


WILLIE S. HIX

Willie Smith Hix, 87, of Anderson, widow of the late J. L. Hix, died Mar. 28, 2007 at the Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Franklin County, GA, she was the daughter of the late William Burton and Ruth Wood Smith. She was reitred from LaFrance Industries and was a member of LaFrance First Baptist Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Brown of Anderson, Bobbie Gailey of Townville, Kay Sanders of Williamston and Beverly Pruitt of Sandy Springs; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Smith of Sumter.

Funeral services were held Mar. 30 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

AUSTIN SIMMONS

Austin Shane Simmons, 10, of West Pelzer, died March 8, 2007 at Hospice House.

He was the son of Michael Shane Simmons and step-mother, Ashley Simmons of Belton, and Sabrina Neibel of Pickens.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Donald and Tammy Simmons of Pelzer, Ronnie Owens, Lee and Nancy Evatt, and Sandra Brown; sister, Bailey Simmons; brother, Tyler McClain; and great-grandfather, Carl Looper.

Graveside services were held March 10 at White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.


WILLIAM ‘BILL’ EDWARD BATSON

William “Bill” Edward Batson, 74, of Piedmont, died Mar. 28, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late William Young and Barbara Waldrop Batson, and husband of Betty Hinson Batson.

He was retired from Kingsdown Mattress Company and the Cline Company. He was a member of West Gantt First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are three children, Wilma Rhinehart, Gail Batson and Phillip Batson; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mar. 31 at West Gantt First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JENNIE CAMPBELL

Jennie Faye Campbell, 75, wife of C.J. Campbell, of Ware Place, died Mar. 30, 2007 at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Henry and Cecil M. Allen. 

She retired from Proctor and Gamble and was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Tony Campbell of the home.

Funeral services were held Apr. 1 at Washington Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

REV. ROBERT HAROLD HUGHES

Rev. Robert Harold Hughes, 83, husband of Sara Jane Clamp Hughes, of Belton, died Mar. 31, 2007 at AnMed Medical Center.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Mack and Venus Hughes and was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a retired Baptist minister and a member and former pastor of Bessie Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; son, Harold Dean Hughes of Woodruff; brother, Rev. J. M. Hughes of Atlanta, GA; and sister, Lucy Clamp of Honea Path.

Funeral services were held Apr. 2 at Bessie Road Baptist Church. Burial fllowed in Garden of Memories in Belton.


MELISSA BURRELL

Melissa “Mimmy” Gail Pritchard Burrell, 28, of Pelzer, died Mar. 29, 2007.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of Samuel G. and Sandra Gail Spearman Pritchard.

She was a homemaker and a member of Ware Place Church of God.

Surviving are her parents of the home; son, Chad Avery Burrell, Jr. of the home; and grandmother, Betty Spearman of Pelzer.

Funeral services were held Apr. 2 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


VERDELLE SHERIFF

Verdelle Manley Sheriff, 68, of  Greenwood, wife of Albert Sheriff, died Mar. 26, 2007 at her home.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late John and Lois Poore Manley. She was a member of Marshall Road Church of God.

Surviving are her husband of the home; three daughters, Tammy Martinez of Ninety Six, Cindy Brown and Jaime Satterfield, both of Greenwood; two sons, Albert Sheriff, Jr. of the home and Tommy Sheriff of Madera, CA; two sisters, Frances Carter of Madera, CA and Katie Autry of Williamston; two brothers, Marvin Manley of Williamston and Bob Manley of Fresno, CA; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mar. 29 at Marshall Road Church of God. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

HERMAN CUYLER HUDSON

Herman Cuyler Hudson, 77, of Piedmont, died Mar. 29, 2007.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Ralph Lee and Kellie Brown Hudson.

He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Greenville Housing Authority.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Scruggs of Greenville; four sons, Tim, Bruce, Bobby and Terry Hudson, all of Greenville; two sisters, Gay Jacks and Gwen Pierce, both of Greenville; a brother, Terry Hudson of Greenville; his former wife and friend, Gloria Faye Hudson; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A graveside service was held Apr. 2 at Graceland Cemetery, West.

MELBA H. WILLIAMS

Melba Huck Williams, 86, of Easley, died Mar. 30, 2007 at her home.

Born in Santa Rosa, CA, she was the daughter of the late August Samuel and Julia Baroli Huck.  She was a homemaker and a former executive secretary.

Surviving are a son, S. Stuart Williams, Jr. of Fair Oaks, CA; a daughter, Jean Williams Weston of Williamston; one brother, August Samuel Huck Jr. of Sebastapol, CA; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sayre Stuart Williams.

Memorial services will be held Apr. 7 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown. Entombment will follow at a later date in San Diego, Ca.


ROBERT LEE BOWDEN

Robert Lee “Bobby” Bowden, 51, of Piedmont, died Mar. 29, 2007 at his home.

He was born in Greenville County to Mrs. Vadis Hester Bowden of Piedmont and the late Robert L. Bowden. He was formerly employed by Michelin Tire Company. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Bobby Bowden of Greenville; daughters, Michele and Nichole Bowden of Easley; brother, Terry Bowden of Florida; sisters, Gloria Lollis of Gray Court, Linda Lollis of Piedmont, and Martha Ray Farley of Parttville, AL; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Apr. 1 at Greenville Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


SGM ROBERT H. EVATT, U.S. ARMY RET.

Dec. 29, 1940 - March 29, 2007

BELTON - Robert Henry Evatt, 66, husband of Ressie Jo Hawthorne Evatt, of 211 Bowlan Road, died Thursday, March 29, 2007 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Henry and Lillie Mae Siegler Evatt. He retired as a Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army following 26 years of service, was formerly employed by BASF, and a member of Mountain Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of 42 years, he is survived by daughters, Angela Evatt of Belton, Teresa Jo Hegdahl and her husband Eric of Slana, AK, Kristi Evatt of Williamston; son, Robert A. Evatt, a student at the University of South Carolina in Columbia; son-in-law, Robert Carlson of Palmer, AK; brothers, Jerry Evatt of Gulf Breeze, FL, Sam Evatt of Spartanburg, Kenneth Evatt, Ronnie Evatt, both of Belton; grandchildren, Amanda Evans and her common law husband Brian Givens of Belton, Johnny Cloud of Seattle, WA, Mikell Carlson of Slana, AK, Ashlee Carlson of Palmer, AK, Jasmin Evatt of Williamston; and great-grandsons, Timothy, Payton and Graham.

He was precedeased by two brothers, Marvin Evatt and Herman Evatt.

Graveside services with military honors were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family received friends Saturday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

SEAN MICHAEL DUBOSE

Sean Michael DuBose, 23, of Spring, TX, died Mar. 28, 2007.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was employed with the Boy  Scouts of America as a district Scout executive.

He was preceded in death by his father, Major William T. DuBose, US Army.

He is survived by his mother, Judith Ann Cushman DuBose of Baytown, TX; fiancee, Catherine Franklin of New York City, NY; and grandparents, Charles and Betty DuBose of Pelzer.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Apr. 3 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Baytown, TX. Burial followed in at Cedarcrest Cemetery.

JAMES JOHNSON

James Johnson, of Greenville, died Mar. 31, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Joseph David Johnson and Lucille Mamie Young Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Olinthia Johnson; son, Reginald Parks of Easley; daughters, Tammy Smith and Teresa Mattison, both of Mauldin; sisters, Naomi Barmore and Martha Gaines, both of Piedmont; brothers, Philip Johnson of Piedmont, Samuel Johnson of Brooklyn, NY and Paul Johnson of Lafayette, IN; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Apr. 4 at Union Baptist Church. Burial followed in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.


CHERYL STRATTON

Cheryl Elizabeth Stratton, 38, of Piedmont, died April 2, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are husband, Bobby Walter Adams; daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Kay of Greenville; son, Robert Eric Stratton of the home; and one granddaughter.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.


HAROLD MONROE

Harold Bruce Monroe, 49, of Piedmont, died April 2, 2007 at Hospice House of Anderson.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of Julie Belle McCall Monroe and the late Marvin Franklin Monroe. He owned and operated Monroe’s Lawn Care.

In addition to his mother of Easley, he is survived by daughters, Deanna Amber Monroe, Terra Jade Monroe Thomas, both of the home; sisters, Donna Haynle of Greenville, Janice Childress of Williamston; and brother, Gerald Monroe of Piedmont.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Apr. 5 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont.
