JOE ANN WHALEY

Joe Ann Cantrell Whaley, 67, of Piedmont, widow of Ray Allen Whaley, died April 8, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late John Ira and Emma Culbertson Cantrell. She was a homemaker and a member of Southside Baptist Church in Piedmont.

Surviving are daughters, Delores Smith of Piedmont, Cheryl Ann Diaz of Greer, Nancy Joe Brown of Easley; son, Kenneth Ray Whaley of Piedmont; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Apr. 12 at Southside Baptist Church in Piedmont. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


DIANE ROGERS

Diane Welborn Rogers, 55, wife of Brad Rogers, of Piedmont, died April 10, 2008.

Born and raised in Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Sanford T. and Helen Welborn.

Surviving are her husband, Brad Rogers of the home; sons, Neal and Andy Kelley; brother, Mike Welborn, all of Piedmont; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held April 13 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.


CHARLES KENNETH EDWARDS

Charles Kenneth Edwards, 56, husband of Janice Laverne Ruth Edwards of Belton, died April 8, 2008 at AnMed Medical Health Center.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of Edna Louise Fullbright Edwards and the late Walter Lee Edwards. He was an employee of Blair Mills of Belton, member of Dorchester Baptist Church and Captain fireman for Belton Fire Department.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Belton and wife of the home are; daughters, Renae Bowman of Clinton, NY, Anyley Chappell Edwards of Belton, and Adrienne Edwards of Greenville; brother, Roy Lee Edwards of Moncks Corner; and one granddaughter.

Funeral service was held Apr. 12 at Dorchester Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Garden of Memories.

Memorials may be made to the Dorchester Baptist Church Building Fund.


VERA WORLEY

Vera Morris Worley, 79, of Pelzer, widow of Earl Worley, died April 12, 2008 at Hospice House.

Born in Union County, she was a daughter of the late John “Buck” and Bertha Gonce Morris. She retired from Fiber Industries.

Surviving are daughter, Margaret Caughman of Lexington; sons, Robert Earl Worley, J.S. Worley, both of Pelzer; sister, Juanita Wilson of Prattville, AL; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Apr. 15 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.


JOAN CLAIRE BRIDGES

Joan Claire Bridges, 50, of Iva, died April 12, 2008 at the Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Homer Richard and Martha Mae Russell Smith.

She is survived by son, Robert David Vaughn of Iva; brother, Richard Smith of Williamston; sisters, Deborah Fields of Williamston, Brenda Kay and Linda Smith of Iva.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold Dwayne Bridges.

Funeral services were held April 15 at the Woodlawn-Sosebee Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.


ETHEL GIBBS

Ethel Mary Davis Gibbs, 85, of Williamston, widow of William Lester Gibbs, died April 8, 2008 at her home.

Details will be announced later by Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.


LOUIE HAND

George Louie Hand, 87, of Anderson, died April 7, 2008 in Charlotte Hall, MD.

Born in Williamston, he was the son of the late Marvin Jay and Alma Kinard Hand. 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and was a Merchant Seaman.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. April 10 at Williamston City Cemetery.


MARY NELL MASTERS MAHONEY

Mary Nell Masters Mahoney, 65, wife of Douglas “Al” Mahoney of 103 Fleetwood Dr. died April 10, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Graham, TX, she was the daughter of the late Elbert Heulan and Mary Cunningham Masters. She was a member of Augusta Road Church of Christ in Greenville and a retired Bank Teller at BBT.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are: son, Mark Mahoney of Belton; daughters, Melissa Roper of Pelzer and Charlesa Hayes of Belton; brother, Dr. James H. Masters of Canton, TX and Everett H. Masters of Brattleboro, VT; sister, Martha M. Brandon of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister Barbara M. Warnock.

Service was conducted April 14 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Garden of Memories.


MERLE HOWARD

Polk County - Merle Landrum Howard, 63, of 10165 Green River Cove Road, died April 11, 2008 at The Elizabeth House. 

A native of Landrum, he was the son of the late Landrum Thomas and Mary Ann Griswold Howard. He was the husband of Dietra Roach Howard for 44 years. He was a member of Mountain Valley Baptist Church, a mason with Landrum Lodge and was a retired engineer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Phillip (Sherri) Howard of Anderson, Marc (Kimberly) Howard of Gaffney; a brother, Larry Howard of Polk County; five grandchildren, Matt, Drew, Erik, Jessica and Jodi.

The family received friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services followed at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel conducted by Rev. Fred Siegfried and Rev. Bobby Pierce. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

JERRY WEBB

Jerry Ray Webb, 27, of Williamston, died April 10, 2008 at his home.

Born in Anderson, he was a son of Freddie Ray Webb and Susan Dean Stacey. He was employed by Carolina Auto Auction, was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are his father, Freddie Ray Webb of the home; mother and step-father, Susan Dean and Terry L. Stacey of Honea Path; step-mother, Debra Lynn Webb of Anderson; sisters, Jamie Cannon of Belton, Carlie Stacey of Honea Path; brother, Jason Webb of Belton; step-sister, Christy Phillips of Williamston; step-brothers, T.J. Stacey of Greenville, Jeff Stacey of FL; grandparents, Arthur and Emma Lou Worley of Joanna; grandmother, Mattie Dean of Donalds; and step-grandmother, Patricia Stacey of MI.

Funeral services were held April 14 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Courtenay Memorial Cemetery in Newry.


IRBY B. GOLDSMITH, JR.

Irby B. Goldsmith Jr., died April 10, 2008 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Irby B. and Odious Robinson Goldsmith, Sr.

Surviving are daughter, Nicole Y. Goldsmith of Pelzer; sons, Corey and Rodney Goldsmith, both of Pelzer; sister, Marian Nedwards of Piedmont; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service was held April 16 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


KATE E. HOSSFELD

Kate E. Hossfeld, 88 of Pelzer, died April 13, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Surviving are a daughter, Anneli Reuther of Pelzer; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eve of Washington, DC and Ruth of Munich, Germany.

A memorial service will be held the evening of April 26 at the Greenville Seventh Day Adventist Church, East North Street.


DORA DOLL FURMAN

Dora Juanita Doll Furman, 69, of Greenville, died April 12, 2008.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Inez Shackelford.

Surviving are her husband, Tom Furman; three daughters, Deanna McKinney of Rutherfordton, NC, Julie Barnhill of Greenville, and Jackie Doll of Greenville; a son, Donny Doll of Jacksonville, NC; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Norma Jean Trussell of Mooresville, NC, Barbara Sanders of Greenville, Lettie James of El Paso, TX; and two brothers, Doug Shackelford of Greenville, and Jim Shackelford of Greenville.

Graveside service was held April 14 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Kids’ Praise Team at Parkwood Baptist Church, 2140 State Park Rd., Greenville, SC 29609.


VERENUS JOAN BARRETT

Verenus Joan Barrett, 66 of Piedmont, died April 12, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Harold Wilson and Mertie W. Jones.

She was a homemaker and attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. 

Surviving are her husband, Broadus Barrett of the home; two daughters, Shannon Dobson and Tiffiney Barrett; three grandchildren; five sisters, Trish Justeson, Fran Young, Beverly Rink, Mickey Burgess and Tammy Johnson; and three brothers, David Wilson, Phil and Ray Jones.

Funeral service will be held April 17 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.


ROY LOLLIS

WILLIAMSTON - Roy Guyton Lollis, 57, husband of Martha Jean Fletcher Lollis, of 137 Jeremy Drive, died Monday, April 14, 2008 at his home.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Fred Guyton Lollis and the late Annie Dyer Human. He was formerly employed by Hammond and Sons and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church in Pelzer.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Fletcher Lollis of the home; sons, Robert Lee Lollis and Jimmy Ray Lollis, both of the home; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Betty Lollis of Williamston; and grandchildren, Chris, Mathew, Savannah, and Elizabeth Lollis, and Josh Plumley.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Lollis.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at White Plains Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Spearman and the Rev. Bill Bryant officiating.

The family is at the home and received friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
