NORMAN EDD ‘FIREBALL’ SIMS

Norman Edd “Fireball” Sims, 76, of Greenville, died May 27 2007.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Joseph and Susie Ivey Sims.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant. He attended Truth Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville.

Surviving are his wife, Clairette Porter Sims; four daughters, Norma Jean Lee, Judy Collins and Debbie Keller; all of Greenville, and Tammie Adams of Pelzer; four sons, Buck Sims of Williamston, Terrell Sims of Anderson, Pete Porter of Greenville and John H. Porter of Pelzer; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was first married to the late Janie Sims.

Funeral services were held May 31 at Truth Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JOSEPHINE W. BELUE CREWS

Josephine W. Belue Crews, of Greenville, died May 29, 2007.

Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late James C. and Ellen M. Williamson.

She was retired from Southern Worsted Mills and was a member of North East Church of Christ.

She was twice married, first to the late Cecil Belue, then to the late Donovan M. Crews.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Latham of Arlington, TN and Linda Ruth Turner of Piedmont; two sons, James Belue of Greer and Gary Belue of Travelers Rest; sister, Ruth W. Woodall of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 1 at The Mackey Mortuary. Interment followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.


HELEN S. JONES

Helen Stevenson Jones, 59, of Greenville, died May 29, 2007.

Born in Elizabeth City, NC, she was the daughter of the late Marshall H. Stevenson and Camilla Morris Stevenson.

She was employed with Carolina First Bank and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband Donnie T. Jones; son, John T. Jones of Piedmont; sister, Annette Morgan of Rocky Mount, NC and brother, Marshall H. Stevenson Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services were held June 2 at Morningside Baptist Church. Private entombment followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park Serenity Mausoleum.

BOBBY DEE RAMSEY

Bobby Dee Ramsey, 79, of Williamston, husband of Dot Chastain Ramsey, died May 29, 2007 at the AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Pensacola, FL he was a son of the late Burton Leon and Florow Ward Ramsey. He was retired from the United States Civil Service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Butch Ramsey, Jimmy Ramsey , David Ramsey, Joey Ramsey, all of Texas; stepchildren, Roy Chastain of Alabama, Rodger Chastain of Greenville, Terry Chastain of Williamston, Steve Chastain of Simpsonville, Debbie Chastain of Williamston; two brothers, Nolan Ramsey of Alabama, Norman Ramsey of Mississippi; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Wilson Ramsey.

Funeral services were held June 1 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. A family committal service will be held at a later date at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.


SHULER JONES

June 17, 1923 - May 30, 2007

PIEDMONT - Samuel Mack “Shuler” Jones, Jr., 83, husband of Faye Kelley Jones, of 909 Anderson Street, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Samuel Mack and Essie Finley Jones. He was a U.S. Army veteran, an agricultural and beef farmer, a general trader, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Piedmont.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Jessalene and Terry Watson of Piedmont, Becky and Lee Williams of Williamston; grandchildren, Tom and Jill Watson, JoEllen Watson Faulkenberry, Ben Watson, Casey Jones, Melanie Dajani, Lee and Amanda Williams; and great-grandchildren, Wyatt Watson, Sebastian Brooks, John Williams, Jordan Dajani, Madison Dajani, and Blake Williams.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was predeceased by his sons, Shuler Mack Jones, Billy Jones; and sisters, Louise Spearman, Helen Austin, and Aileen McKinney.

Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m. June 1 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with Dr. Stephen Hearne and Dr. Thomas DeVenny officiating. Burial followed in Springwood Cemetery in Greenville. Serving as pallbearers were Jackie Bracken, Tony Moore, Ricky Moore, Chip Moore, Robert Elrod, William Dickson, David Allison, and John McCoy. Serving as honorary escorts were Tammie Coleman, Patty Yon, Denise Cantrell, Jennipher Trusty, Charlie Potts, Marshall Durham, Denver “Dink” Higgins, Harry Waldrop, M.O. Howard, and David Cantrell.

The family is at the home and received friends 1-2:30 June 1 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

LILA ELLEN GREER HEATON

WILLIAMSTON, SC - Lila Ellen Greer Heaton, 89, of Williamston, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, after a period of declining health. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” (Ps. 116:15)

Born in Greenville, SC on February 8, 1918, a daughter of the late Henry Edward Greer and Cecil Rose Evans Greer. Ellen was reared in Duncan, SC. She graduated from Duncan High School class of 1937 and worked briefly in textiles. On December 25, 1940, she married Kendall S. Heaton of Hartwell, GA. They lived in San Diego, CA, while he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Later they had two daughters and eventually settled in the Belton-Williamston area.

There Kendall completed a 40 year career with Duke Power Company, and Ellen was a homemaker and volunteer. She was known as a fabulous cook, an excellent seamstress, and a dedicated mother. Her zest for life and her gifts of hospitality, service, and mercy were evident in all of her endeavors.

Ellen formerly was a faithful member of Latimer Memorial United Methodist Church in Belton, for 20 years, where she served tirelessly as a children’s Sunday School teacher and a youth coordinator, was a member of the couples Sunday School class and the sanctuary choir, and was very active in the Wesleyan Service Guild. Currently, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston where she sang in the choir, was a member of the Happy Ladies Sunday School Class, and was involved in missions through the WMU as long as her health permitted. Prov. 31:25-31.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Kendall S. Heaton, in 2003 and her beloved daughter, Sue Heaton Smith, in 1987. Also preceding her in death were siblings, Catherine Greer Spears, Henry Edward Greer, Jr., Douglas Eugene Greer, Sr., John Edgar Greer, and Robert Earnest Greer, and a niece and nephew.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Greer Heaton and Terrel D. Ballenger of Easley, SC; a brother, Wilburn Ansel Greer and his wife Mildred of Westerly, RI; a sister, Roberta Greer Friesen of Charlotte, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service was held on Friday, June 1, 2007, at 4 p.m. in the mausoleum at Greenville Memorial Gardens with Dr. B. Dale Ellenburg and Dr. Larry B. Thompson officiating. Entombment was prior to the service, and the family received friends immedately following the service.

The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted and suggests that those wishing to honor Ellen’s memory please make a contribution to a charity of their choice or to one of the following: Mission Fund, Calvary Baptist Church, 10 Academy Street, Williamston, SC 29697; Latimer Memorial United Methodist Church, 200 River Street, Belton, SC 29627; or to Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. CONNIE ANGEL

Connie Marie Seigler Angel, 44, of Hamilton Road, died May 25, 2007.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of Elaine Capps Seigler and the late Horace Madison Seigler. She was formerly employed at Kemet Corp. and attended Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

Surviving are her mother of Pelzer; three sons, Jeremy Robert Angel, United States Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, CA, Joshua Christopher Angel of Easley, Jake Michael Millwood of Mauldin; two step-daughters, Michelle Millwood and Victoria “Tori” Millwood, both of Williamston; two brothers, Dewayne Seigler, Michael Joseph Seigler, both of Piedmont; and grandmother, Ethel Pack Capps of Pelzer.

Funeral services were held June 2 at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


WENDELL BUFORD SANDERS

Wendell Buford Sanders, 68, of Vinton, VA died May 23, 2007. He was born in South Carolina and retired from the United States Air Force.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa; parents, Lois and John Felix Sanders.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Sanders; three daughters, Tammy Bonnin of Pensacola, FL, Gidget Corn of Zirconia, NC, Tonya Koller of Lynn Haven, FL; one son, Dr. Eric Sanders of Lake Charles, LA; two stepchildren, Dena M. Priddy and Jeff Morgan; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maggie Czerwinski of Mesa, AZ and Gaynelle Kennedy of Piedmont; two brothers, David Sanders of Las Vegas, NV and Jim Sanders of Myrtle Beach.

Funeral services were held May 26 at Lynn Haven Baptist Church. Interment was June 6 in Arlington National Cemetery.

JESSE DEWEY STEPHENS

Jesse Dewey Stephens, 86, of Greenville, husband of Mary Tannery Stephens, died May 28, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Henry Joe and Dollie P. Sarget Stephens.

He was retired from J.P. Stevens and was a member of Oak Crest Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daugher, Margaret S. Noble of Easley; son, John D. Stephens of Pelzer; sister, Fannie Belle Rumsey of Anderson; brother, Jack Stephens of Piedmont; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held May 31 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

RUTH HALL

Ruth Elizabeth Fowler Hall, 78, wife of Clarence H. Hall of Anderson, died May 29, 2007 at Ellenburg Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late James William Fowler and Addie Gillespie Fowler. She was retired from textiles and a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Clarence H. Hall of the home; two daughters, Martha Smith of Williamston and Debbie Rogers of Anderson; brother, Rev. Warren E. Fowler of Gaffney; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 31 at Southside Baptist Church. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.


ERNEST M. HART

Ernest Milton Hart, 78, of Belton, died May 29, 2007 at his home.

Born in Kansas City, MO, he was a son of the late George F. and Frances Emma Teague Hart. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from United Engineer and Constructors, and a Baptist.

Surviving are daughters, Penny Vickery of Belton, Peggy Rainey of Williamston, Nancy Lewkowski of Salem, NJ; sons, Michael Hart of Townville, Mark Hart of Chattanooga, TN; brothers, Earl Hart of Florida, James Hart of California; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Gray Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


JEAN ROGERS

Nora Jean Burgess Rogers, 71, of Williamston, died May 31, 2007.

She was retired from Celanese Fibers in Greenville and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Pelzer.

She is survived by her husband, Carl W. Rogers of the home; daughter, Lynn Chasteen of Williamston; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held June 4 at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

EUGENE JACKSON SR.

Eugene Jackson, Sr., 87, formerly of Greenville, died June 2, 2007 in the Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, Greenville.

A son of the late Wilson Jackson, Sr. and Amanda Granderson Jackson, he was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church in Greenville and former employee of Cohen Industries in Sumter.

He is survived by two daughters, Alice J. Bailey of Pelzer and Mable Helen Jackson Riley of Greenville; three sons, Eugene Jackson, Jr. of Charlotte, Larry Wilson Jackson of Mauldin, Bobby Jackson of Greenville; the mother of his children, Mable Sims Jackson of Greenville; one sister, Susan Jackson of Sumter; two brothers, Wallace Reid Jackson of Rochester, NY and Alfair Jackson of Sumter.

Funeral services were held June 5 at the Beasley Funeral Home Chapel, Fountain Inn. Burial followed in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.


CYNTHIA LOUISE ESTEPP

Cynthia Louise Estepp Tucker, 40 of Pelzer, died June 2, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Greenville County to Larry Estepp of Pelzer and Polly Painter Estepp of Simpsonville. She was a former daycare employee and was of the Church of God Faith.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her stepmother, Debra Ann Estepp of Pelzer; son, Jordan McKenna Hunter and daughter, Shana Cameron Tucker, both of Simpsonville; sisters, Buffy Reid of Fountain Inn and Wanda Adkins of Corona, CA; stepsisters, Leigh Ann Beaudreau of Easley and Jennifer Hopkins of Williamston.

Funeral services were held May 5 at Cannon Funeral Home Chapel, Fountain Inn. Burial will be at a later date.


GEORGE ARTHUR GILLIS

George Arthur Gillis, 70, of Greenville, died May 31, 2007 at his home.

A native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, he retired from Bekaert (Ashworth) of Simpsonville. He was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the Black Watch Regiment of Canada.

Surviving are his wife, Freida Silver Gillis; daughters, Lynn Tyler of the home, Pam Gordon of Greenville; son, John R. Gillis of Piedmont; sisters, Jean Crawley, Hazel Mansfield and Lorraine McCuish, and a brother, Peter Gillis, all of Nova Scotia, Canada; two sisters, Ann Shelton and Peggy White, both of Dacusville; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Memorial services were held June 3 at Westville Church of God of Prophecy in Greenville.

EVELENA B. DEAN

Evelena B. Dean, of Greenville, died June 2, 2007.

She was employed at Duke Energy and a member of Sweet Canaan Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Dean of Greenville; son, Kerry Dean of Beaufort; brother, Pete Williams of Pelzer; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 6, 2007 at Sweet Canaan Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


THOMAS CLAUDE THORNTON

Thomas Claude Thornton, 82, of Piedmont, died June 3, 2007.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Susan Clevie Ward Thornton.

He retired from Bost Bakery and served in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Knight Thornton of the home; two daughters, Kathryn Holden and Susan Lindley, both of Piedmont; one son, Tommy Thornton of Tampa, FL; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Thornton of Piedmont and Mildred Holcombe of Greenville; and one brother, Carl Shipman of Easley.

Funeral services were held at Grove Station Baptist Church Cemetery.

HELEN VIOLA GARRISON

Helen Viola Buchiester Garrison, 81 of Easley, died June 3, 2007 at her home.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Warren and Leona Lance Buchiester. She was retired from Union Carbide and was a member of Piedmont Church of God.

Surviving are three sons, Henry Eugene “Gene” Garrison of Williamston, Charles Edward Garrison of Pelzer and Anthony Lee Garrison of Easley; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 6 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
