Joseph Lucius Price, Jr., 98, widower of Eunice M. Campbell Price, died Aug. 8, 2007 at Richard Campbell VA Nursing Home. Born in Iva, he was the son of the late Joseph Lucius Price, Sr. and Ida Ozmint Price. He was retired from Southern Weaving, a Presbyterian and a United States Navy Veteran having served during World War II. Surviving are two sons, Hugh Price of Piedmont and Richard Price of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Memorials may be made to the American Legion, 430 N. Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Emma Lee Friddle Fowler, 77, of Greenville, widow of Fuller Morgan (Doc) Fowler, died Aug. 7, 2007. Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Lela Hampton Friddle. She was a homemaker and a member of the Victory Chapel Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Terry Fowler of Greer, Phillip Fowler of Anderson and Steve Fowler of Pelzer; two brothers, William G. (Bill) Friddle and Robert M. Friddle, both of Greenville; a sister, Mary McQueen of Greenville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at Victory Chapel Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Victory Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Hoyt Edward Bagwell, 70, of Pelzer, husband of Carolyn Grant Bagwell, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late W. F., Sr. and Emma Richardson Bagwell of Pelzer. He retired from Southeastern Freight Lines and was an active member of White Plains Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and church clerk. In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by daughter, Cherri Smith; son, Eddie Bagwell; six grandchildren, Candace, Rick, Levi and Forrest Smith, Bryce and Drew Bagwell; and great-grandchildren, Blaze, Jada and Zoey. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Wade and Bobbie Bagwell of Greenville, Lonnie and Jean Bagwell of Anderson; sisters, Gladys Spearman of Piedmont, Sybil Williams of Anderson; a brother-in-law, O.T. Harrison of Williamston; and sisters-in-law, Kathryn Bagwell and Edna Bagwell, both of Pelzer, and Nancy Bagwell of Piedmont. He was predeceased by brothers, William F. Bagwell, Jr., Carl Bagwell, and Ellis Bagwell, Sr.; and sisters, Edith B. Harrison and Ruth Bagwell. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2007 at White Plains Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Spearman officiating. Music was provided by Jeanie Thomas. Burial followed in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 12:30 - 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Plains Baptist Church, 1435 Easley Highway, Pelzer, SC 29669 or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. The family extends their gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff and doctors of the Cancer Center of the Carolinas in Greenville and to the staff of Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson. Gladys Lucile Driver McGill, 85, widow of the late P.O. Dock McGill, of Belton, died Aug. 8, 2007 in Anderson. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late William Robert and Estelle Hopkins Driver. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Kaye Burns of Belton; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; brother, Sam Driver of Belton; sisters, Kathleen Reeves and Jenell Vaughn, both of Belton. Graveside services were held Aug. 10 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
Ellen Little, 86, died Aug. 9, 2007 at Magnolia Manor of Greenville. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late James Butler and Helena Diggs Hunt. Surviving are daughters, Ruby C. Billie, Helena C. William and Malinda S. Garrett, all of Greenville; sons, Rush C. Little Jr. of Greenville, John C. Little of Piedmont and William C. Little of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Mary Ruth Byuarm and Almeda Rippy, both of Charlotte, NC; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Aug. 12 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
William Henry Smith, 69, of Williamston, husband of the late Louise Bowen Smith, died Aug. 9, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born in Piercetown Community, he was a son of the late Harmon Newton Smith Sr. and Alma Hicks Smith. He retired from John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels Inc. He was a member of Six & Twenty Baptist Church. Surviving are sons, Michael Smith, Tim Smith and Bobby Smith, all of Williamston; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at Six & Twenty Baptist Church. Interment followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Anderson with Masonic Rites. Maxey Carlton Briley, 62, of Piedmont, husband of Dolorez Briley, died Aug. 9, 2007 at his home. Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Dorothy Campbell Johnson and the late Ernest Briley. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a former employee of Daniel Construction and Condustrial Inc. of Greenville. He was a member of Emerald Baptist Church in Greenwood. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and mother of Ninety Six are two sisters, Lynda B. Black of Ninety Six and Iris Elaine Newton of Greenwood. Funeral services were held Aug. 13 at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
William F. Hunt, 59, of Hudson, FL died Aug. 10, 2007. Born in Akron, OH, he was a U.S. Navy Veteran of Vietnam and was employed by Sonlight Carpet in Tampa, FL. He was predeceased by his parents, Archie F. and Elizabeth J. Hunt. He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Shipley Hunt; sisters, Nancy Greer of Hudson, FL, Joan Biege of Taylors and Mary Voiselle of Easley; brothers, Mark Hunt of Pickens, Stephen Hunt of Piedmont and David Hunt of Aurora, MO. A memorial service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church of Hudson, FL. Memorials may be made to the building fund of the church, P.O. Box 5532, Hudson, FL.
Herbert E. Prince, 78, of Greenville, died Aug. 11, 2007. A Greenville native, he was the son of the late William and Inez Osteen Prince. He was retired from Bell South. He is survived by a daughter, Janet Prince of Gray Court; two sons, Barry Prince of Greenville and Craig Prince of Gray Court; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Katheryn Stroud of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Aug. 14 in Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Chapel, Downtown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park. July 21, 1930 - Aug. 11, 2007 WILLIAMSTON - Helen Broome Hardy, 77, formerly of 1 Pinecrest Drive and willow of Larry Furman Hardy, died Saturday, August 11, 2007. Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Henry and Lillian Hughey Broome. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Wendy Hardy Rogers and her husband Louie Rogers and their children, Michelle Sheree Rogers and Matthew Gabriel Rogers, all of Honea Path; three brothers, Thomas Broome of Greenville, Clarence Henry Broome of Anderson, Wilford Broome of Williamston. She was predeceased by daughters, Diane and Dianna Hardy; son, Kenneeth Larry Hardy; and sisters, Mary Reece and Earlene Haynie. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Gray Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Alton Midgett and Dr. Jim Norris officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Guy Calvin Chastain, 83, husband of Syble McMillan Chastain, of Pelzer, died Aug. 12, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late J.D. and Tensie Cooley Chastain. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from the Kendall Company, and was a member of Washington Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Carolyn Burns, Peggy Ouztes, both of Pelzer; sons, Gary Chastain of Honea Path, Garvin Chastain of Pelzer, Danny Chastain of Powdersville; brother, Raymond Chastain of Surfside; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Aug. 14 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
Lt. Commander Thomas Tom Hamby, U.S. Navy Ret., husband of Frances Fran Ellison Hamby, of Charleston, died Aug. 13, 2007. He was born in Honea Path, the son of Thomas Jefferson Hamby and Minnie Hughes Hamby. He was a member of Ashley River Baptist Church and served as Vice-President of Administration at the College of Charleston. Surviving are his wife, of Charleston; three brothers, Elbert Hamby and Herman Hamby both of Belton and Vernon Hamby of Greenville; one son, Steven T. Hamby of Charleston; one daughter, Dr. Debra Hamby of South Port, NC; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 15 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel. BELTON - José D. Torres, 59, husband of Lorri Michelle Chadwell Torres, of 19 Leah Lane, died Monday, August 13, 2007 at his home. Born in Puerto Rico, he was a son of the late Fundador Torres and Ramona Melendez. He was formerly employed by Tiger Transport. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, José Miguel Torres, Kendall Cole Torres, Michael Lee Torres, all of the home; daughter, Brandy Lynn Smith of Belton; brothers, Carlos Torres, Octavio Torres, both of New Jersey, Salvador Toro of Piedmont; sisters, Monserrate Torres of New Jersey, Santa Torres of Puerto Rico; and grandchildren, Kansas Lelia Smith and Brittanee Sierra Smith, both of the home. Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer, with Pastor Tommy King officiating. The family is at the home and will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Eunice Haselden Johnson, 63, of Williamston, widow of the Rev. Raymond Lee Johnson, died Aug. 13, 2007. Born in Marion County, she was a daughter of the late Wheeler and Marie Haselden Jones. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Wayne of Gaffney; daughters, Brenda Tucker of Rock Hill, Vickie Vaughan of Piedmont; brothers, Joseph Jones, David Jones; sisters, Sylvia Hansen, Maxine Warren; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. PIEDMONT - Keith Strickland, 52, husband of Rebecca Becky McClellan Strickland, of 12 Piedmont Avenue Extension, died Monday, August 13, 2007, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late James Grady and Jeannette Phillips Strickland. He was a Baptist. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Evelyn Strickland of Williamston; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Bradley Wallace of Piedmont; brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Pat Strickland of West Pelzer; and his loving bulldog Churchill. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer, with the Rev. Bobby Lindsey and the Rev. Scott Sheriff officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Virginia Mama Gin Kellett Lollis, 79, wife of Steele Dendy Lollis, of Pelzer, died Aug. 13, 2007 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Emma Campbell Kellett. She retired from Kemet and was a member of Daventon Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Patricia Gail Lollis Kay of Belton; sister, Ernestine Heatherly of Pelzer; and one granddaughter.
