RUTH MARIE CULBERTSON

Ruth Marie Powers Culbertson, 88, of the Kents Ridge Road section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, died Aug. 16 at the home of her son, Bill Culbertson, following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Wise County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Duncan Allen Powers and Lottie Bell Skeens Powers, both Wise County natives.

She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area for the past 60 years and was a graduate of Little French’s Beauty Academy and had completed food preparation courses at Southwest Virginia Community College. She was a former certified nurse’s aide and was retired from the Tazewell County School System having worked at Richlands Elementary School. She loved serving food to the special needs children at Pounding Mill. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Richlands.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Mahone Culbertson, Jr.; one sister, Imogene Elaine Powers; one brother, Duncan Powers; and one half brother.

Survivors: daughters, Carole Lee Culbertson Meade and husband, William, of Williamston, Nancy Elaine Culbertson Ratliff and husband, Eddie, of Belfast. VA; sons, William Allen Culbertson and wife, Susie, of Kents Ridge, VA, George Mahone Culbertson and wife, Deborah, of Ridgeway, WA; half sister, Mary Ann Keen and husband, Lee, of Grundy, VA; ten grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Richlands, VA, with the Rev. David Brannock officiating. 

Entombment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, VA. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 402 Suffolk Ave., Richlands, VA 24641 or a charity of your choice.  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA, was in charge of arrangements.


WILLIAM R. DUVALL

William R. Duvall, 87, of Anderson, died Aug. 19, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

He was the spouse of Beverly Duvall and a World War II Veteran.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, five daughters, one step-son, two step-daughters, one brother, 32 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and three step-great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 22 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Easley. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.


MICHAEL DAVIS

December 7, 1963-Aug. 19, 2007

PELZER - Michael Anthony Davis, 43, beloved husband of Tammy Owens Davis, of 11 Fuller Street, Pelzer, SC, went home to Heaven on Sunday, August 19, 2007, in Pelzer.

Michael was born in Pelzer on December 7, 1963, at the Old Pelzer Hospital that is now home to the Pelzer Rescue Squad. He was the son of Jack Dendy Davis and Vera Ann Henderson Davis of Pelzer.

Michael was a proud South Carolinian and was a huge South Carolina Gamecocks fan, as was the rest of his family. He was excited about the upcoming football and hunting seasons. He loved hunting, fishing, music, all types of sports, and spending time with his family and friends. He was so humble and kind, always helping others and never complaining. We have lost a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. We will always hold him in our hearts; he will never be far from us. We will grieve until we are with him one day in Heaven.

Michael was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer and was formerly employed with the Town of Williamston.

In addition to his wife of twenty-two years and his parents, Michael is survived by two brothers, William Dendy Davis and Kenneth Earl Davis and his wife Regina, all of Pelzer; two sisters, Jackie Davis Holcombe and her husband Johnny of Honea Path, and Melissa Andrea Davis and fiancé, Bruce Neely of Pelzer; grandmother, Ruth Davenport Davis of Pelzer; parents-in-law, John F. and Diane Owens of Belton; sister-in-law, Stephanie Owens Kelly and her husband Mike of Williamston; brother-in-law, John F. Owens, Jr. and his wife Chris of Belton; nieces, Tabetha Roberts, Madison Davis, Summer Holcombe, and Brooke Diaz; nephews, Brennen Davis, Drew Owens, T.J. Kelly, Sky Holcombe and Cody Moore; and three great-nephews, Bryson, Austin and Landon Roberts.

He was the grandson of the late John Chelsey and Cora Smith Henderson and the late Grady William Davis.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer with the Rev. Bill Bryant and the Rev. Phillip Clardy officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family is at the home of Jack and Vera Ann Davis, 19 Langley Street, Pelzer, and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.


REV. FAY L. LANFORD SR.

Rev. Fay L. Lanford, Sr., 94, of Greer, died Aug. 14, 2007 at Allen Bennett Hospital.

A native of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Lewis W. and Hattie Eubanks Lanford.

Rev. Lanford was a retired Southern Baptist Pastor-Minister.

He served at the following churches, Gowansville, New Liberty, Pleasant Hill, Glen Street Baptist Church, Beaverdam and Big Creek Baptist Churches.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Ballenger Lanford of the home; a daughter, Shirley Lanford West of Greer; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.

ROBERT E. REID

Robert Edward Reid, 43, of Pelzer, died Aug. 12, 2007 at his home.

Born in Easley, he was the son of Johnnie Gibbs Hess of Pelzer and the late Paul Reid.

He was a U.S. Marine Veteran and member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are stepfather, Paul Hess of Pelzer; daughter, Alexa Reid of Easley; son, Chase Reid of Easley; sister, Paula McGuckian of Newnan, GA; brother, Chris Reid of Easley; and stepbrother, Jay Hess of Herndon, VA.

A memorial service was held Aug. 16 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.

ANNA MARY KELLEY

Anna Mary Chambers Kelley, 61, of Piedmont, died Aug. 15, 2007 at her home.

Born in Huntington, IN, she was the daughter of the late Dwight and Virginia Fair Chambers. She was formerly employed by Rice Mills in Honea Path.

Surviving are sons, Tony Kelley of Atlanta, GA, Scott E. Kelley of Piedmont, Joe Wesley Kelley of Boiling Springs; brother, Fred Chambers; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Aug. 18 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.


TILLMAN GENTRY

Tillman Gentry, 75, husband of Edith Hicks Gentry of Pelzer, died Aug. 16, 2007 at Riverside Living Center in Piedmont.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Jessie Furman and Mary Ellen Garrett Gentry. He retired from Carolina Rubber Rolls and was a member of Bethel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Carolyn Templeton of Greenville, Bonnie Impson of Pelzer; sisters, Ida Mae Culbertson of Pelzer, Jessie Garrison of Belton; twin brother, Willman Gentry of Pelzer; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at Bethel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MOSE DALTON KAY

Mose Dalton Kay, 69, of Williamston, died Aug. 15, 2007 at his home.

He was the son of the late Charles Dalton Kay and Emma Carter Kay and a U.S. Army Veteran.

Surviving are two brothers, Clarence D. Kay and Laylon M. Kay.

A memorial service with military rites was held Aug. 18 at Woodlawn Sosebee Funeral Home Chapel.


ANDY LEROY SMITH

Andy Leroy Smith, 80, of Piedmont, died Aug. 17, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville County, PFC Smith served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are one daughter, Donna Dianne Martin of Easley; three brothers, Bill Smith of Greenville, R. Charles Smith and Dewey Smith, both of Pelzer; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 21 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel.


LOUISE PORTER

Louise Haulbrook Lewis Porter, 88, of Liberty, died Aug. 19, 2007 at her home.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late William Monroe Haulbrook and Lena Brown Haulbrook. She was a cosmetologist and also worked in textiles.

She was a member of Piedmont Church of God.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara Campbell of Pelzer and Jo Ann Hammond of Liberty; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, B.A. Lewis and her second husband, Clarence Porter.

Funeral services were held Aug. 21 in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.


GLORIA B. SARGENT

Gloria B. Sargent, 62, wife of the Rev. Dr. Marshall E. Sargent, died Aug. 16, 2007.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Gordon G. and Audrey Stanton Ballard.

She was an executive assistant with First Baptist Greenville and a member of Berea First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Matthew Earl Sargent of Sherman Oaks, CA; sister, Ellen Revan of Pelzer; and two brothers, Ed Ballard of Piedmont and Rayford Ballard of Orlando, FL.

Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at First Baptist Greenville.

A committal service was held Aug. 20 in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

KATHERINE HOWINGTON BALLARD

Katherine Howington Ballard, 73, widow of James Edward Ballard, of Honea Path, died Aug. 15 at Regency St. Francis in Greenville.

Born in Donalds, she was a daughter of the late Dorsey and Pauline Woodson Howington. She was a member of Honea Path First Assembly of God Church and was retired from Chiquola Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are three sons, William Edward Ballard, John Wesley Ballard and Joel Thomas Ballard, all of Honea Path; two daughters, Betty Ann Honea and Linda Faye Bush, both of Honea Path; one brother, Curtis Howington of Pelzer; one sister, Gloria Jean Rainey of Pelzer; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at Honea Path First Assembly of god. Burial followed at Broadmouth Baptist Church Cemetery.
