Claire Jennings Mosteller, 77, widow of the late Charles Alexander Mosteller, Sr. of Williamston, died Oct. 23, 2007 at St. Francis ICU. Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late William Wesley and Maude Leslie Jennings. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Williamston and a homemaker. Surviving are sons, James Michael Mosteller of Williamston, William Christopher Mosteller of Belton, Buck Mosteller of Woodruff and Johnny W. Mosteller of Williamston; daughters, Georgia Mosteller Smith of Illinois and Toni Mosteller Bates of Princeton; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Nell Aiken and Sue Dalton, both of Williamston and Sybil Gillespie of Easley. Funeral service was held Oct. 26 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery of Easley.SR.
Sr. Master Sgt. J.T. Grogan, III, U.S. Air Force, Ret., 51, husband of Beverly Elaine Sullivan Grogan, of Pelzer, died Oct. 22, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Topeka, KS, he was the son of the late John Thomas, Jr. and Marjorie Grogan. He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, was employed by Medals of America in Fountain Inn and attended Beech Springs Tabernacle. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by daughter, Amanda Grogan of Marion, IL; sons, John Jack Thomas Grogan, IV, of Indianapois, IN, Patrick Patterson of Williamston; sister, Deloris Dee Vogt of Huntington, NY; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Beech Springs Tabernacle. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jane Stewart Phillips Haire, 62, of Pelzer, died Oct. 23, 2007. Born in Woodruff, she was the daughter of William H., Jr. and Hazel Janet Stewart Phillips. She was a member of Unity Church, Gum Springs Pentecostal Church. Surviving are seven children, Janet Haire of Pelzer, Charlote Haire Schultz of Taylors, Ben R. Haire, Joseph L. Haire, Jr., William Charles Haire, James H. Haire and Stewart Haire, all of Pelzer; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be announced by the family.
Ethel Bearden, 88, wife of Ervin C. Bearden, of Pelzer, died Oct. 23, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Hartwell, GA to Nita Henry and James Bright, she was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by chidren, Janice Clarkson of Pickens, Junior Bearden of Lexington, Bill Bearden of Locust Grove, VA; sister, Edith Crawford of Columbia; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 26 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Doris Frances Frady Hicks, 78, wife of Clydus Eugene Hicks, of Pelzer, died Oct. 24, 2007 at Riverside Living Center. Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late David Rufus and Naomi Autrey Frady. She was a homemaker and attended Eastview Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Gene Hicks, Dale Hicks, both of Williamston, Brian Hicks, Bruce Hicks, both of Pelzer; brother, Earl Frady of Greenville; sisters, Myrtice Smith of Greenville, Jo Faye Cannon of Pelzer, Betty Burgess of Piedmont; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services were held Oct. 27 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Beatrice Simmons Jones, 87, of Easley, died Oct. 27, 2007 at Oakmont East Nursing Center. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Ingram and Essie Holder Simmons. She was formerly employed with the Judson Plant of Milliken Corp. and retired from ECP. She was a member of White Plains Baptist Church and attended United Wesleyan Church. Surviving are one son, Bobby Ray Jones of Pelzer; a daughter, Willie Mae Moody Kelly of Easley; two sisters, Lucy Abercrombie of Pelzer and Dot Wilson of Easley; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Oct. 30 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, 421 S.W. Francis Marion Darnell, 88, husband of Frances Lovinia Brackens Darnell, of Easley, died Oct. 27, 2007 at his home. Born in Bamberg County, he was a son of the late George Washington Darnell and Laurel Ann Matthews Darnell. He was a retired building contractor and a charter member at Brushy Creek Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, Marion Darnell of Easley and Gerald Darnell of Piedmont; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Funeral services were held Oct. 30 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens. Margie Lee Smith, 63, of Williamston, died Oct. 25, 2007 at her home. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late James Morris and Ethel Mae Morris. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Anderson. Surviving are her husband John Smith Sr. of the home; four sons, John Smith Jr. of Liberty, James Smith of Williamston, Darrell Smith of Anderson and Franklin Smith of Greenville; one sister, Glendia Robinson of Greenville; one brother, Randall Morris of Greenville; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at the Holloways Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Belton City Cemetery.
James Edward Dog Man Thompson, 67, of Williamston, died Oct. 22, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Sammy Lee and Mary Francis Pool Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Ola Mae Mitchell Thompson; daughters, Susan King, Mildred Mitchell, Timmy Gaines of Greenville, Carolyn Preston of Bridgeport, CT and Sheila Simmons of Piedmont; sons, Robert Mitchell, Michael Mitchell of Winston-Salem, NC and Charles Guyton of Greenville; sister, Shirley Thompson Adams of Anderson; 24 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at W.I. Peek & F.W. Jackson Memorial Chapel of the Unity Mortuary, Anderson. Burial followed in the Anderson Memorial Gardens.
Sam J.P. Chapman, 89, of Piedmont, died Oct. 27, 2007 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville. Born in Liberty, he was the husband of Fario Mae Kyle Chapman and the son of the late Fred and Rosa Lee Vaughn Chapman. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Piedmont Plush Mill. He was a member of Abundant Grace Church of God. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Terri Kuester of Ferndena, FL; two sons, Gerald Chapman of Easley and Jimmy Chapman of Greenville; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 30 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Darnell Robinson, 57, of Greenville, died Oct. 23, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was a son of Rev. Pearl R. Hudgens of Greenville and the late Joe Hill. He was the adopted son of the late James Odell Robinson, Jr. Surviving in addition to his mother are, his brothers, Carnell Robinson of Atlanta, GA, Charles Robinson, Gerald Robinson, Tyrone Hill and Janssen Hill, all of Greenville; sisters, Tamura Tammy Miller of Piedmont and Linda Ware Smith of Greenville; and grandmother, Beulah Robinson of Greenville. Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at Queen Street Baptist Church. Burial followed in Pinedale Memorial Park.
Betty Jo Burnett, 69, of Greenville, wife of Clyde F. Burnett, Sr. died Oct. 25, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Chattanooga, TN, she was a daughter of the late Fred Franklin and Florence Jo Carlton Tallent. She was a retired machine operator and a member of Free Life Christian Ministry. Surviving in addition to her husband are, three daughters, Sheila Jo Gregory of Piedmont, Sherry Ann Killough of Gaffney and Linda Ann Gilbert of Nashville, TN; a son, Ronnie B. Burchfield of Albany, GA; sister, Imogene Harvell of Roswell, GA; two brothers, Kenneth and Ray Talent, both of Cleveland, TN; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 17 step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 28, 2007 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery, West.
John Earl Bagwell, 72, formerly of Pelzer, widower of Carolyn Elizabeth Hogan Bagwell, died Oct. 27, 2007 at Summit Place Living Center. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Willie and Sara Lou Knight Bagwell. He was retired from Orchard View Meats and a member of Washington Baptist Church. Surviving are his stepson, Jack Harrison Hogan of Asheville, NC. Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at Washington Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Carl Benjamin Garrison, 86, of Pelzer, husband of the late Frances Bomar Anderson Garrison, died Oct. 26, 2007 at his home. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Pembrook Bizzell and Ollie Bell Davis Garrison. He was a World War II Army veteran, retired from the City of Greenville and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters, Virginia Diane Garrison of the home, Joye G. Hamby of Piedmont; stepsons, Steve Anderson of Piedmont, Andy Anderson; stepdaughter, Cheryl Edge of Pickens; sister, Ruby G. Poole of Pelzer; and two grandchildren. Carolyn Virginia Colvin Cox, 65, of Piedmont, wife of Larry Earl Cox, died Oct. 26, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Madison County, FL, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Drucilla Webb Colvin. She was retired from Dayco Automotive, later worked for Wal-Mart and was of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter, Hilda Fraize of St. Charles, Ark.; four sons, Michael Bales of Poulan, GA, Kevin Bales of Piedmont, Jeffery Bales of Norman Park, GA and Ronald Bales of Dewitt, Ark.; three stepdaughters, Gail Rice of Tifton, GA, Sheila Butler of Savannah, GA, and Melinda Martin of Albany, GA; one stepson, Larry D. Cox of Reid, KY; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Bette Jo Edge Effler, 70, of Williamston, widow of James V. Effler, Sr. died Oct. 27, 2007 at AnMed Health. A native of Spartanburg, daughter of Lola Harvey Edge of Spartanburg and the late William Lloyd Edge, she was retired from Wise Food Company and of the Baptist faith. Also surviving are two sons, James Effler, Jr. and John William Effler, of Williamston; two sisters, Kathleen Bishop and Shirley Potter of Cowpens; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Oct. 29 at Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 680 Nazareth Church Road, Moore, SC 29369.
August 20, 1932-Oct. 28, 2007 WILLIAMSTON - Barbara Ailene Cobb Singleton, 75, wife of Billie Gus Singleton, of 810 Tripp Street, died Sunday, October 28, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Pelzer, she was daughter of the late Alfred Leland and Dorothy Margaret Huntley Cobb. She was a retired dental assistant, having worked for Dr. John L. Rankin, and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Williamston. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Mike and Reba C. Singleton of Williamston; uncle, Joe Huntley of Lake Hartwell; grandchildren, Renee Singleton, Neal Singleton and Stephanie Lockaby; and great-granddaughter, Paige Lockaby. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Williamston with the Rev. Dr. James Norris officiating. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family received friends 12:30 - 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service. Gray Mortuary, Pelzer was in charge of arrangements.
Walter B. Nation, Sr., 97, husband of Mary Kathleen Williams Nation of Abbeville, died Oct. 28, 2007 at Abbeville Nursing Home. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Millard Nation and Ada Ellenburg Nation. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and was of the Baptist Faith. Surviving are his sons, Jack Nation of Pendleton, Walter B. Nation, Jr. of Williamston; daughters, Mary Nation Taylor of Anderson, and Patricia Williams of Sandy Springs; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Lonie Mae Sargent Nation. A graveside service was held Oct. 31 at Six & Twenty Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund of Six & Twenty Baptist Church, 3701 Six & Twenty Road, Pendleton, SC 29670.
TAYLORS, Clyde W. Scroggs, 66, husband of Brenda Burt Scroggs, of 403 Taylors Road, went to be with his Savior, October 30, 2007. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of John Martin Scroggs, and the late Genella Scroggs. He was a U.S. Naval veteran, formerly employed at W.W. Williams Diesel Co. and a member of Pelzer Church of God. Surviving are his wife of the home; son, Michael Burt and his wife, Lisa; and grandson, Seth Burt of Williamston; daughter Christa Waldrop and her husband Michael; granddaughter Elizabeth Waldrop; two sisters, Nellie Higginbotham of Williamston, Jane Frye of Gray Court; four brothers, Robert Scroggs, Frank Scroggs, Johnny Scroggs and Mike Scroggs, all of Pelzer. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pelzer Church of God with Rev. Tony Edwards officiating. Entombment will follow in Graceland East Cemetery Mausoleum on Woodruff Road. The family is at the home of Mike and Debbie Scroggs, 49 Spring Street, West Pelzer, and will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to services. Leona Parker, longtime Williamston resident and teacher, died October 31, 2007. She was a dedicated member of Williamston Presbyterian Church where a memorial service will be held. At presstime, a date had not been set. Miss Parker was loved by her school children. She was honored by the community on her 80th birthday prior to moving to the Presbyterian Home (Frampton Hall in Clinton) in 2003. She was the Grand Marshal in 2005 for Williamstons Christmas Parade, and the Greater Williamston Business Association annual Christmas ornament honored her in 2006.
Harry Lee Waldrop, 94, husband of Sallie Garrison Waldrop of Piedmont died Oct. 30, 2007 at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late James Arthur and Roxie Raines Waldrop. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from J.P. Stevens as a supervisor and was a member of First Baptist Church in Piedmont. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sara Katherine Ridgeway of Easley; son, Harry Lee Waldrop, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; sister, Myrtle W. Wilson of Collemee, NC; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Piedmont. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont. The family will receive friends in the Morgan Building of the First Baptist Church of Piedmont on Friday from 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to the McCall Hospice House of Greenville, 1836 W.
